Vending Machines
« on: February 04, 2005, 11:43:10 pm »
No, I don\'t mean getting a Coke near the tavern.

At some point we are going to be able to play merchants.  It would get pretty boring to have to stand around the plaza and talk to every single person that walks by.  Good role-playing, sure, but I\'d be surprised if people actually commit to it for any stretch of time.

Thus I suggest we allow merchants to create vending machines.  They could pay for them (maybe a player MAKES vending machines) and the bigger ones look nicer.  The point is that have a list of items \"in stock\" and their prices, you can buy it by simply clicking a button.  The merchant is responsible for setting prices, keeping things in stock and promoting his personal taco stand.

yes sumthing like a vending machine would be nice if u were trying 2 sell sumthing. But they shouldnt be placable anywhere. People should only be able 2 put them in special market places. There should be like a portal in each city that goes 2 these market places. Once in the market place people can browse threw the market stalls or talk 2 an npc 2 get a space 2 put their market stall. Once u get a spot 2 put it the nps would telport u there. Once there you can put items there or take items away. U could set it at a certain price or make it like an auction. There would also be an npc by the portal u came in who has a search option. U can search for any item. The items will come up in price order (so the cheapest is at the top). U could leave by taking the portal u came in with.

that game had a good idea about venders. Maybe if ps wants venders they could make their idea using that site. I think ps could really use venders for merchants or for any1 who wants to sell sum of their junk.

That does look like a good idea.  I\'m curious how it worked out.  I never played that game.  Did you?  How did you like the system?

yes, i do play that game.

the way it works is (this is from a customer\'s view. i have never owned a vendor) you open a littleshop of your own, fill it with npc\'s and have them sell things. like you would give them stuff to sell, set the price, and so forth.

good idea huh? EA games always has good ideas :P

sticking to a point of role-playing I see this as a bad idea... who wants to just place some NPC\'s or a vendor somewhere? that has no value... we need people to stand there and sell, and not be able to AFK sell either, you stand there using the vicinty chat and yell \"Goods for Sell!\" so when someone trys to buy what you\'re selling you then have to click ok, so then you have to be there to hit ok or no one would be able to buy from you

...now thats a good idea

EDIT: and you can pay PCs  to sell stuff for you, see adds a lot of role-playability and some nice social action

I think it\'s a good idea for a small merchant to have to stand and sell his wares, but let\'s think long term.  If we want to build a sophisticated society, we\'re going to need a few Donald Trumps.  I don\'t think you can get enough people joining a MMORPG who want to play concession stand employees.  Soon enough, the business will be too big for one person and there won\'t be any workers.

Unless you want to play a game where you live in a depressed economy, have to work all the time and never really get ahead.  Come live in L.A. and be an actor!  Most of my friends are already playing that game in real life!  (I chose \"scientist\" and now I\'m a level 12 Mathematician)

well for ps it could be that you hire npc\'s and pay them by the hour or something. (or they get a % of the profit)

IMO dumb...only idiots would actually sit there for hours on end just to sell a few things

so i guess you\'ll find it dumb when you have to do that and not sell any items

you cant think of PS as any other MMORPG, it is totally different in its role-playing focus, and not the easy way of doing things...

I imagine you won\'t find it so dumb when you are searching around to get a better sword at a better price, or getting paid by some PC to take out another merchant.

There are those who don\'t need to be the brooding hero and enjoy just creating a virtual society. Those people make the place much richer and deeper for everyone.  YOU don\'t have to sell items, but you\'ll be glad when someone is.  Besides, many of the future weapons are supposed to be PC generated, so get in good with your local blacksmith and when he comes up with a great weapon, you could be first in line to try it out.

That doesn\'t sound so dumb, does it?
