Thought I'd say hi
« on: August 07, 2002, 05:22:10 pm »
So here goes: HI!
I just found out about this mmorpg a couple a days ago. I was searching for a free mmorpg and then I bumped into this one, first reaction: \"Dude, this doesn\'t look all that bad!\". So I was kinda thinking how they can keep this one for free? I mean, the money HAS to come from somewhere, right?

Well, guess that\'s all for now.
Cya...

Welcome

That point has been discussed for a long time, and I think it still is...
The game is in an early development stage by now, and all the devs are benevoles, so the main problem will be the server, when a big one is needed.

Try to read that: http://www.planeshift3d.com/forum/thread.php?threadid=11&boardid=1&styleid=2

Hiya Keldorn!

As elkano said they been talking about their ideas for keeping it free, i think the best one myself was the paying for unique items....i know i would do that  :D

That idea is really cool... other featues could be having your name in a different colour (I mean, f.ex, when you put your mouse on s/b, it shows his name in white, but if that person is a donator, is wrote in yellow).
I was curious about how \'the 4th coming\', another free mmorg, was doing, and I have discover some interesting things:
? at the beginning there was Vircom who made the code
? then they wrote a licence (which I have not found so I do not know what it says)
? then they offered their product to companies
? those ones run dedicated servers, under their own conditions

The result is a game where, with one client, you can play in many servers, some free, some not, each one with different carasteristics (I mean, different religions, politics, and so on, but same races and world) and even different languages.

As you can see, the concept is not the same than ps\', but I definitely find the idea of another company hosting the server for free the best. Whch don\'t exclude unique items for donators.
I think, what if, for connecting, you should go through a web page that the server company would control?

Yeah, Keldorn Firecam was cool, kept him in my party the whole time, even when he wanted to stay with his family (I still feel guilty about that one  ;) ).

Anyways, about the money issue, Planetarion (anybody know that one) used to be completely free as well, then they changed their politics and you had to pay for the game. Naturally many people didn\'t appreciate that and left the game.
Now they\'ve got free servers and servers where you must pay to play, the difference is that, and this part is taken from the planetarion site, free accounts start off with a slight setback, and will not produce resources when they pass 3 million in score, unless they are upgraded through payment.
Now you probably could think of a way to implement this same system into this game.

Just an idea...

there are many ideas on how to make money to maintain the Game.

some are better then others, but As of right now and as far as I think, The game will be free, you will get no benifit from paying, Donating and some other forms of revenue may be thought of...

but we are nowhere near needing to resolve that at the moment.

but all ideas are welcome, but pop up adds are not a solution and noraml advertisment will not be a solution...perhaps we might have in game message advertisement, Like a message on the top left corner saying \"this moment brought to you by Mountain Dew...Do the Dew\"

but that would require a strong fan base and alot of demographic info....what is the point ot a Mountain Dew add if you live in a place where there is no mountain dew.
