the word for all player species
« on: February 14, 2005, 11:54:27 pm »
i\'ve been kind of wondering. is there a general world that can be used when refering to all the species of ps?

you\'ve got men, enkis, etc. but what is the word for everyone? sapients, feels a little clinical. sophants, read that somewhere, i think it applies. beings, well maybe, but hopefully not.

any suggestions?

Humanoids?
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

I don\'t like the D&D-terms, but well, they exist...

...sentient beings? This would include even abstract things as the proverbial AI from SciFi (not that I suggest SciFi-content for PS)
Everyone should make their own MMORPG

Exactly:  People.

It\'s not a humanocentric world.

Would you call a human a dwarfoid?

i perfer citizens
or inhabitants...
or dwellers ....
but those more legal terms

biologically well you can\'t group them....krans have little incommon with other races.  I mean you don\'t have a common name for birds and humans.....well only one....living beings...or maybe Intelligen Living Beings..or ILB\'s
hey it\'s a fantasy world....if we can\'t find a word ...we can make one
i actually play planeshift

It\'s not a D&D term anymore than \"orc\" is a D&D species.

\"People\" works fine, but I\'ll prefer humanoid myself :3

God knows I would never put Karyuu in the \"people\" category, but it is probably the safest bet for everybody else.

I definitely vote for \"Dwarfoids\", as it is cool! :D I like it very much!
However, this wouldn\'t actually have emerged in Yliakum, and would be a purely OOC term.
However, a term might have been coined by Yliakums inhabitants due to the fact that Yliakum is (mostly) self-contained. That term might be something like \"Yliakumers\", which, however, doesn\'t sound well. The obvious choice, \"Ylians\", is taken, though it might have become synonymous for it, depending on context, just like some RL words. This would, however, be confusing OOC-wise. So how about \"Yliaki\"? You could derive the term for \"humanity\" from this: \"yliakity\" (no, not yliakitty :P), maybe spelled \"yliacity\" despite it\'s potential confusion with Hydlaa, the \"main\" city of Yliakum.

Differentiating between singular and plural might be an option as well, though it\'s not strictly necessary seeing as there are several words that have no distinction. Also, \"yliak\" sounds a bit strange, but that is probably just a matter of getting used to it.

Hmm, works for me. From this day forth, I will never call people \"people.\" They are now Yliaki.  8)
