Interesting...
« on: February 19, 2005, 12:43:22 pm »
This guy has a point, this was taken from the Xfire forums site and this topic is about PS :D.

In short Xfire is just a program that allows you to see if your friends are playing and by a click of the button you will be connected.

This comment was taken from the post:

I actually did visit the site because the idea sparked my interest. Quite interesting as too what i found:

\"We want to give FREE access to everyone, without the need to either purchase the game or pay a monthly fee. Servers and bandwidth will be donated by sponsors.\"

\'Donated?\'

Unless the game is rigged with advertisments from said sponsors, these \'sponors\' must be out of their minds. A Server and Bandwidth cost money, there isn\'t even a purchase of the game, I doubt this can stay up and running for long until

A) The team is getting tired of not being paid (Do you seriously think developers are in it soley just to create games? No, they are in this for the money)
B) The \'sponsors\' are getting fed up with the blow to the wallet at the cost of the servers and bandwidth

The only solution I am thinking of is the potential of this game being a hot spot for advertisments, similiar to what Gmail does.

I\'m gonna check into this and try this myself.

EDIT: Well, I downloaded the client, and it clearly states how this is an open Beta. World of Warcraft\'s Beta was free, ROSE Online is currently a free beta, a lot of MMO games have free betas that come out. This is most likely an experiment for now and if this continues, it will be interesting to see what happens to both the development team and the \'sponsors.\'

Wondering what you guys(Dev\'s as well) think of what this guy is saying and if you think he is true in 1 way or another. :(

Too see the whole post click here!

Well I dont agree with it.  The Devs Im sure have plenty of reasons why they are creating this game.. but I dont think money is one of them...  I would say for more experience in game developing but im not sure.

People have always asked whether or not PS will remian free.

It will.  Forever.  Or at least until they have successfully taken over the world.

The servers they use are donated.  In fact pretty much every aspect of Planeshift runs on donations right now.  Not player donations, though.  I have actually seen devs refuse donations, simply because it would be unfair to split donations between the devs.

Everyone who is working on Planeshift is doing so simply because they love what they do.  They have outside jobs to sustain themselves.

If the guy from Melbourne says \"Good on ya!\", I guess I, being from Southern California, should say

\"You dudes are totally rad!  Like, the devs are bitchen!\"

(and I mean it)

It lacks the reason why Fragnetics is donating the server, though. However, I think it is marketing. The hosting they do doesn\'t cost much money. In fact, they\'re losing way less money than they probably put into conventional advertising. By hosating PS, they get a prestige boost, the same reason why there are sponsors for automotive racing, and they are pumping out millions each year. So Fragnetics is donating the PS server because they know PS will attract a lot of attention, way more than any web ad will, and a great percentage of it will also extend to \"whos\' hosting it\", while costing them almost nothing. Therefore, it\'s IMO obvious that they are quite happy to donate the server. I\'m absolutely convinced that they don\'t do it out of idealism, companies are beyond petty things like that. ;)

The concept that people can and will develop software, artwork, and other content for free use by all seems to be one that is lost on Mr videoxpg. I wonder how he has been living in ignorance of things like Linux, Firefox, Apache, OpenOffice, Mozilla, and so on all this time.

The forum software that he is posting on at Xfire is Free Software (phpBB), as is the Webserver (apache), and the operating system the webserver is running on (Linux).

If those facts are true, than the development team is basically begging to be bankrupt soon.

That is sad.

Hopefully he comes away from this discussion a bit less ignorant.

The server requirements really arnt that big- if i remember correctly the bandwidth requirements were something like 10kbytes/sec (back in MB, thats obviously increased a bit since then) which is less than 1 gig a day.... ok so thats a bit however we\'re talking about a game with what 20,000 registered players?  If one in a hundred players donated $2 a month that would cover 30gig bandwidth a month.  Plus the team has had lots of offers for other people willing to host the server but have turned them down becuase they dont need them.  Someone might want to correct me on the figure of how much bandwidth is needed, but i think its essentially correct.

Wow-o-rama What was that place? it was like TOTSE.com\'s and SlashDot\'s forums mated in some unholy matrimony of breeding to form a inbred \"special\" spawn of \"d00dhood\"

O.o.. way to tell em off \"moogster\" :)

EDIT: totse.com is awsome place to get info on many things.. the forums are the opposite of the site.. just look at them for 10 minutes and you will want to brutaly murder 99% of the people who post there :/

/me throws his 2 cents on the table.

Obviously the majority @ Xfire has little experience with the open source community.....
