Games and Coding
« on: February 20, 2005, 09:46:54 am »
Anybody know a site that has coding specificly for games? All the coding books i find are of the \"And if you would like to make a word processor or spreadsheet program then use...\" i mean if i wanted a baseline program like what they keep wanting me to make then i would use the 500 million of them made by other people XD

And any other sites about how to make 2D sprites and incorporating them into games would be good to know :D (i personaly like a good sprite over 3D any day gotta love that retro feel, plus i suck at 3D and at least have a chance of doing sprites well :X )

Well thats about it for now.. i really hope i can code RPG but anything about programming i find is to complicated as its trying to teach me to code every kind of program at once :/ and i dont know what i can use and what i should toss as i know little to nothing about coding :(

(also i used the search and went about 3 pages in so i hope this hasn\'t been talked about before)

You have to sign up, but it\'s free and well worth it. But gamedev is awesome too.

But seriously, don\'t start an RPG as your first project. Planeshift has how many developers and how many years work behind it? OK, it\'s 3D but even still, a simple 2D one is not a light undertaking. Just do something simple and classic like pong/snake working up to tetris, etc. You have to learn to walk before you can run. When you\'re just starting game programing you also have to learn to crawl before you can walk ;)

Quite naturaly i would ;) i just said thats my end project and where all the steps lead... For the moment anyway i just want to learn only the things that will get me there, i know! i\'ll make \"Super Tetris RPG 2005!!\" :P

i found plenty of sprite stuff but (un?)fortunantly sprites are soo easy i now have a bunch of sprites and no clue how to use \'em XD

Guess i\'ll get a C/C++ book at the library today and get started on that

(suprisingly this has been a blast so far, dont know why i put of learning all this dev stuff so long O.o)

But it has become pay to use now...

Q: How many Planeshifters does it take to expalin a simple concept to a newb?
A: Six. Five to argue on who\'s explanation is right, and Moogie to lock the thread.

Check out a simple game development language before you jump into C/C++.

C++/OpenGL:
OpenGL - The Red Book
NeHe OpenGL
CodeSampler

I would look at  PyGame too.
Ordo Illuminatis
Master in the House of Shadow
Official Tavern Kitty

man i\'m up to my belly button in sprites O.O.. guess i\'ll just read some more online C++ stuff
