I am thinking of starting an mmorpg
« on: February 22, 2005, 05:33:48 am »
I am thinking of starting an mmorpg.  Not sure what type.  But, if I do the only thing I can do is story.  Background, and all that stuff.  So i need some help.

Well your off to a good start :O Although in my opinion Story line is the main area of focus if you were to begin construction on a MMORPG but must we forget all the talent in coding/art/scripting (Whatever else).

Come back with this idea when you have put more thought into that story-line, think of it as a presentation to show some sponsors so they would fund your project. :) Really no one likes to follow a blind sheep.

I have it.

In a mythical land far far away from this universe which is called Revan where orcs, doages(dog humanoid), elves, trolls, humans, and the undead roamed.  But there were to groups.  The alliance which was made up of humans, doages, and elves.  The conspiracy which was made up of orcs, trolls, and the undead.  These to groups waged war on each other for control. If the conspiracy got control the Revan would fill with evil.  But, if the alliance does the Revan will be peaceful.

How you like my idea so far. It took me some time to write it and plot it

Well if you have to rely on the ideas of others thens its not your rpg now is it :P (not to flame but still :/ )

as for the story its baseline but is something to start on :) (it kinda seems ripped from the pages of WoW but i never comment or give abosolute critique to an unfinished idea so ;) just something you may wanna think about when you head into the brainstorming/revision stage )

EDIT: if you want to get good at RPG creation get a few books on literature, learn the three conflicts (man v. man, man v. himself, and man v. power greater then himself I.E. a storm for a sailor or another animal more powerful for a warrior) and figure out ways to sneak those in

Also try \"shaving\" off a few \"standards\" and replacing them with something not done before (pretty bland if you just make the 300th installment of \"get a sword save the world kill the evil\")

Crafting is now semi-expected as is the possibility to be evil and rob... also wow people with the chance to build and plant! (only time ive seen this done is http://www.rpgwo.com )

just a few pointers to go on (figured if i was gonna critique what you had might as well take the non-lazy route and explain how to change it for the better XD )

The biggest problem is getting programmers... meh you could have the greatest storyline in the world but its no use if you dont have a game... I have heard of games with no story but good code that have sold well, but never a game with a good story with no code- details should come after you know if you can actually complete the project.

Have you seen how many people there are out there to contribute to PS ? and still they are having a hard time, they lack good programmers, I\'ve been here for a very short time so I cant tell you how all this started but seeing how it is now, I guess it has been really hard in the beginning.

If you wish to succeed, I think you\'d better join PS\' team, yesterday Talad said 99% of the projects fail, i\'m not sure of the exact figure, but I\'m sure it\'s around 100%, if you have good storylines ideas that cant fit in PS world but that you want to implement somehow, try pen&paper RPGs, there are plenty of them out there, and at least you\'ll see if your idea was good before you turn 90 years old !

If you still want to continue on your way then good luck, but please dont still PS devs, we need them :P

This is the most original storyline I\'ve ever heard. Your project will go far, very far indeed. :baby:

Krayn, little bit of an advise that I should have followed alongtime ago*. Sit on it for a year if you still feel strongly for it in a year go for it but before you get all hyped up, get a portfolio ready to show perspective moddlers/skinners/coders/artists. If you can wait a year and build up your skills but you still want to do it then go for it.

*Just dont ask now many mod programs I was a part of :P. Oh and don\'t ask how many actually pulled through :P.

\"I am thinking of starting an mmorpg\" Stop. YAPWNC.

Try writting some stuff first, like a medium-short story. Then write 20. If you still like what you do, then join an exsisting OSS MMORPG project.

It isn\'t enough just to have the desire to do something, you\'ve actually got to put some real effort into it.  And I\'m sorry, but a halfhearted attempt at a generic story isn\'t going to cut it.  Nothing is as easy as it looks, and this is no exception.

While I know next to crap about MMORPGs, I know that you\'re going to need a solid foundation on which to build this world.  That means you\'re going to have to put a lot of thought into everything.  This aspect is something writers do when they create a fantasy world from scratch.

Then you\'re going to need artists to sketch out these ideas into something visible.  It is during this point I believe you decide on style which varies between realistic and kiddie (lots of color and very cute).  It isn\'t until you have all this planned out, which covers look and function, that you can worry about programming.

And this requires someone other than a novice since you really don\'t need any more mistakes created than you\'re going to have pop up during normal testing.  So if you don\'t know a single thing about coding, scripting, ect, then you\'d be better off pursuing something else.

Now yes, you could rely on someone else to do the programming for you, but it is in my experience this is how takeovers happen.  So atleast have enough experience under your belt to be able to double check the work of your programmers.

Aside from that, you\'ve got to worry about setting up the necessary servers just to play this game you\'ve created, and that is a whole other ballgame.  There\'s also the little things that make your project more professional and are just nice to have around, and that is a website, forum, irc chat, all of which require people to maintain as well.

You want my adivce? I think you should just drop this silly idea, decide on an area of MMORPGs that interests you and start learning, then join another development team and have your ideas heard from there.

I don\'t have any idea how to code but I am a pretty good writer I am asking if any coder or someone wants to do this idea and I am going to change the races a bit.

Alliance: Doages, boers(Humuanois hogs, and bearerars(Humanoid bears)

Conspiracy: Hell hounds, dragons, and acloase(Demon bird)

Its just an idea and I am bored so I said\" What the hell I will try.\" I will stay with it and I will not be daunted by how you hate my idea

Edit: Oh thankyou moogie if you were serious.  Some times I can\'t tell :)
