I have a big gift.

The only "gift" you possess is the sort known to Germans. Shut it.

Don't get touchy, you just weren't blessed the same way.

If you are role playing, I gotta give you props for determination. If you are being serious - you gotta get a sense of humor. Can't believe you don't know what I was referring to when I said "big gift." (It's a joke? Get it? Ha-ha)

stop abusing our fine language. "Gotta" is the mark of an illiterate. Learn to use modal verbs.
Ya tell 'im, homie! Dat cat need to learn dem do-dos an' do-nots, as far as I conce...ranated. Er.  Coz abusin' ain't right, y'know what I sayin'? Yo!

Yet be that as it may, thou hast to keep in thy mind that the english language undergoes constant evolution and simple informal "gotta" should not be held as an abomination greater than, say, writing "can't" in place of "can not".

Also, bloodedIrishman, I hear your big gift is rarely up to the job.

Not only should it be, it is.
Oh, but I beg to differ.
Both "can't" and "gotta" are absolutely forbidden in academic writing and both are accepted in informal writing.
The mechanisms that governed creation of these words are also essentially the same. Both were created through lazy and hasty use of the language.
In case of "can not", the proper vowel of "not" was reduced to schwa (as it is often the case in fast speech) and subsequently turned into a further reduced form of schwa, which is typically represented by an apostrophe.
In case of "gotta" this mechanism reduced the proper vowel of "to" to the schwa sound, which is represented by the final 'a'.
There is no possibility of having a seperate word with only schwa vowel (it would indicate the word has no stress), so the reduced forms have to be connected with words that actually have long vowels.
And as both "can not" and "got to" are in common use, it was convenient to create representations of this hasty and careless speech through these two shortened words.
The only real difference between them is that "can't" is older and language users had more time to get used to it.

But hey, on the other hand... perhaps your personal attack was right. Perhaps four years of English philology really taught me nothing. Who knows?

Four years of English philology and you still can't spell "separate". Dear oh dear.
Ah, indeed. This argument truly counters every single line of reasoning I have written in my previous post.
You have me on my knees. Really.

Well, not exactly really, because I'm not actually here in my room writing all this, sitting on my knees. That would be uncomfortable. Of course I could go fetch my kneepads, but that would require me to go fetch them and put them on and... eh... you know what, theoretically speaking you have me on my knees.

P.S. I'm not a native speaker and philology indicates studying theory of language as well as history/culture of the language users. Not spelling words. That would be like high school, tops. But good game, man.

You begin informal letters with "Dear Sir/Madam"? Dude.

And what's this with you telling me that my education as a philologist is irrelevant, and yet demanding expertise of other philologists? Why is it? Because they have fancy titles next to their names? And that means their basic philology education was somehow superior to ours? They also make spelling mistakes from time to time, y'know.
But fine, if you wish to learn my sources, PM me and I'll give you the names.
Until then, have this crapy link:

I did say it's a crapy link. I promised you better sources via PM, but it doesn't seem like you bothered to contact me about them yet.

He is correct, both of those terms are accepted informally but would not look good in a professional context. Can't should always be written as "can not" formally, and gotta you need to write as "have to" because the informal contraction gotta represents "got to" as in, "I got to", "we got to", et cetera, which is grammatically incorrect.

That Verden states " "gotta" represents "got to" "  when in fact it is an ellision of  "have got to" reveals that this basic point of grammar is lost on many.
Seems I've gotta get a message to you: the fact bloodedIrishman sucks at grammar doesn't quite support your point in any way. He should've said "I've gotta" instead of "I gotta", but that doesn't in any way prove gotta by itself is an erroneous form.
You're just being downright silly now.

Quit cluckin' yer lies
Psh, noes. It's all reliable source - I've been spreading those lies myself!

I realise that the Bee Gees are probably God in your world, but, seriously, don't stop there, because there is  so much material you could mine here. Keep going.
What? Heck no, man.
James Brown is the God!

And what? You're down to "boyfriend" insults? I honestly believed you'd go through "yo momma" ones before that.

Wrong. You would say, informally I've gotta which is short for I have got to. Not I gotta. It represents got to. Additionally, there is no proper definition for gotta that supports your interpretation. Get out of the philology class and into the real world, and maybe check the O.E.D. once in a while.
