There is little point to this friendly argument about "gotta" and philology. Then again, there is little point to most of this forum's activity.  ;D

It's American English. The whole damn thing is a a bastardized language, a conglomeration of corrupted words and nonsense. It defines Americans.   ;D

So now we have rules for informal discourse?
Are you 100% sure you wanted to say that? I mean, think twice. Thrice. Heck, take all the time you need. I give you the chance to back off from that one. No consequences to follow.
Seriously. You're just making things too easy for me.

Congratulations guys... This is easily the most useless and trivial argument I've seen around here. Oh wait, let me use big words so Rinenud can get this too... This is the superlative example of superfluous posturing and remonstration for this forum. Very funny guys, one of the few things left on this forums that actually made me giggle. And even better that for once I wasn't caught in it. :woot:

Sure, but whereas you may like the cut of my jib you might find yourself adversely disposed towards my sharp tongue. ;)

However it is an odd feeling to actually be able to use the words that most people tweak at... or just plain ol' say don't exist. ;D

Aww Rinenud, I actually hoped you'd give me more time to come up with the ultimate sarcastic retort.

So now instead of making a funny for everyone to enjoy, I need to make a completely boring response (say "thanks" to Rinenud, guys...). So.

Yes, my dear fellow poster. We do have rules for informal discourse. In fact, these very rules allow us to communicate in here, seeing as this is in fact an informal discourse as well *swoon*

Also, in the world you do not typically hear "I have got to go", but /aivgotegeu/ (e is supposed to be schwa). You get my drift? We do not speak with letters, but with sounds. And "I've gotta go" is a representation of these sounds. So if you hear someone say "I gotta go" (/aigotegeu/), you do correct him to "I've gotta go" (/aivgotegeu/), naturally.
And only robot would say /aihavgottugeu/, geez.

are beginning to say "I got to" instead of "I've got to

In time, this could become a new regular form.

I have no problem with what Swann said at all.

But really, I've got to go... I can't talk about this anymore.

Well that was a little anticlimactic Draklar. ;D I was hoping for a more involved discourse like my english professor would give on the topic... we could lose 10 minutes easily each lecture just on such topics.

Let me take a crack at this since it was only last semester for me.

*pushes up her sleeves*

Of course there are rules that govern informal conversation. Any kind of speaking has rules, whether unspoken or written. This is how the lines between the different styles are determined and how the appropriate time to use such language is determined. "Standard English" is considered "the proper way of speaking and writing" while in an academic setting and anything less is unacceptable. However, due to the rules of informal discourse, "standard English" is actually considered inappropriate and therefore not used. Also we may add that the internet is largely a place of informal conversation; therefore, standard English is at most times inappropriate and unwelcome to be perfectly honest.

As a side note, we might even go off on a tangent and say that the internet being the unique entity that it is, necessitated its own rules for governing conversation. Thus lolspeak can, in a way, be possibly seen as the proper form of communication, and all the rest of us are merely dragging our preferred rules of conversation with us when we use any other form of conversation.

Back to the original topic, another issue with the use of formal English within an informal setting is the fact that the "standard" is not in of itself the most grammatical in terms of usage. It has been agreed upon that it is the standard, but it contains various inconsistencies that make it less than ideal for the average person while speaking. Thus, many groups have "corrected" the inconsistent spots in their own ways. These corrections are usually what make up the vernaculars and dialects. I would love to give examples here but unfortunately I can't remember them at the moment... Darn calculus and its brain draining properties....

*shakes her fist*

Um, Illy? I think you have missed the point.

You're not actually supposed to write cohesive, easily understandable and straight to the point posts.
Please. I'm sure you can do better...

For example, most users of British English under the influence of the contraction "I'll" and the influence of American English, can no longer differentiate between "I shall.." and "I will..." which to me is a sad loss of meaning. On the other hand, "sick" meaning "excellent" is absolutely wicked.

;D Nice... And I was going to poke you about still being up but I see you answered that question.

Let me add "I would have" (or comparable), which I often saw as "I would of" - things like that really made me doubt now and then.
Over there, lurking from safe distance.

I suggest the statue of Laanx gets turned into a statue of Parallo <3. An NPC could never replace the huge hole he left in my heart when he died  :'(
