Character Names
« on: February 28, 2005, 12:06:40 am »
I can\'t find another thread about this, and I guess this is the best place for it, so how did you choose the names for your characters?

My characters, Jakob Gantos and Arew Silverwing are both characters in a story I\'m writing.

I am Arew Silverwing, and one day I will rule the WORLD!:D
All y\'all stick yourselves onto the board.

Well, my characters name was fated since before I was born. It is an ancient, traditional name that took me months of soulsearching to find.

One afternoon, when stumped and musing over a MB character creation page I smashed the keyboard with both hands simultaneously.

\"asyghe\" was the resulting combination of letters.

Drop the g, move the y. Invent last name for CB screen.

Monketh Saiviono
Monketh: I thought \"Hmm, what sounds midieval?\" back in MB and kept typing different names in then clearing them.  I settled on \'Monk\' and then glued an \'eth\' on for that midieval effect.
Saiviono: I thought \"Hmm, what sounds cool?\" and \"Hmm, what sounds italian?\" back in MB when I began to RP.

One of them is based on a \'half-dragon\' character of mine from back in the 2nd edition days of D&D (Not the classical half-dragon, mind you.  More like slowly turning from human to dragon).    He was male, and the word \'drake\', which is usually associated with male ducks, is also often used on draconic beings.  Essentially, people were calling him \"Drake-ish\".  Eventually, it became \"Drakis\".

Since I didn\'t think Gerard \'Drakis\' Dragonsblood would be a good name for a klyros, I just shoved Drakis as to being his real name, and shoved on a Malaysian word for a last name.

My other character is named after a Romanian exclamation, because gypsies rock.

Well, Faldrok was a name thought up by Hevrah, another PlaneShift player and my cousin. He used to write stories, (I don\'t know if he still does) and he just thought up this name and let me use it.

Rotzeach, my last name, means murderer in Hebrew. (At least, if I remember correctly and if I am spelling it right.) I RolePlay Evil...murderer just fits, and I think Rotzeach sounds cool although I am pretty sure that I am pronouncing it wrong since I don\'t speak Hebrew.

I enjoy Scandinavian History and Norse Mythology (I am a history major).  So I looked through a list of Old Norse names.  I found many that I liked: Goddvein, Aoalbrandr, etc.  I eventually decided on Valbrandr.

I couldnt think of a name, so i tried just using name backwards, as I had done in another game i had tried, and tried Eman, but that was taken.. though ive not seen him around, and then tried Drake, but of course that was taken, so i did drake backwards Ekard, and name backwards, Eman, Ekard Eman, though i believe when the stonebreakers are fixed i may drop the last name.

I\'ve just always been Syrra. If someone already has Syrra I might use Tysira or Tsyra but its all pretty much the same thing.

I\'ll not the explain the reason of my frist name (Putadavila) once there\'s no reason for a guy have a name have a name like that. About Ashamn, i dunno, i always enjoyed male names started by A and i liked a lot of the mn sound, so in some way it looks like i\'m continuing the name sound.

mine was chosen years ago. i hunting for a name for irc. so in the vein of those 133+ h@ck0z5 d00d5, i chose steuben. ripped the name from the hammer\'s slammers novels.

as for the last name, vicosa (but, i should check the spelling). i chose it to fit with one of the stories i\'m writing. vicosa is one of the varients of the black locust tree.

oddly enough it seems to have been one of the infrequently used name. just about every where that i\'ve tried it, it seems to have worked. nobody seems to get the reference and think that i\'m using my real name.

Well I were just thinking and well just out of the blue I remembered Jazeera... well I thought it sounded cool... but later on I remembered that it was also the name of an Arabian tv station (Al-Jazeera, were once called \"Dane, with Arab name\" on IRC -_-), so I guess thats were I heard the name first lol....

And my last name Hlaaron, well I were playing Morrowind and I worked for Hlaalu house so I just removed \"lu\" and added \"ron\" (in my knowledged \"ron\" were used many times as the end of a last name in some game or something...)
Jazeera Hlaaron

Caym is a name I\'ve been using everywhere for years now. I chose it after I came across it everywhere in a kinda strange way for some months, plus it looked a lot like the name of a character I created when I was younger (and I liked a lot the sonority of it). Later I discovered it was the name of some demon (someone also pointed out to me that it was the anagram of \"YMCA\"... -_-), which is pretty lame but well, I was too lazy to bother coming up with a new name.
As for \"Azaghal\", when CB came out I didn\'t know what to choose for a last name so I found a Khuzdul-english dictionnary and picked a word with a pleasant sonority. I thought it was just an adjective but I found out later it was the name of a Tolkien character. I may change it later and try to be a little more original.
