first time here
« on: March 02, 2005, 11:45:16 am »
ok i run the risk of sounding stupid but its a battle i fight every day so here goes.....

i got the game installed, updated and created a charater!!! go me.

i even managed to connect (thats another gold star by my standards)

i could see my bloke, i even said a few words and moved a few feet. but after this it just slows to a halt.
the game seems to freeze or run at such a slow speed it might as well have.

now is this something to do with my laptop? in which case i\'m done for, or is there any help you can give me because.... boy this looks like one hell of a game!!

help?

I am just a figment of you imagination and a byproduct of the worse accident ever... ... or so my mommy says!

Well if I were you then I would run it on a normal computer rather than on a laptop ;)

Oh yeah remember to capitalize your \"I\'s\" just for grammatical reasons :D

Hardware requirements are listed on the main planeshift website.

http://www.planeshift.it/guide/installation.html#installation-requirements

In my opinion these are overly generous, a \'minimum spec\' system with the listed hardware should run very well. Make sure your graphics drivers are as up to date as possible, these make a big difference in performance.

I don\'t know....the computer I use has an Athlon XP 3000+ (2.2 GHz), 1 GB RAM, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro with 256MB RAM, and connected via Cable modem and still hangs a bit at times.

If nothing else, the team should tweak whatever causes the lag, which is probably the graphics engine ^_^;

Planeshift is quite awesome, but only a few of my friends have the capability to run it -- and I\'m a computer science major! My friends are all nerds with self-proclaimed 1337 rigs!

PS has never liked Radeons, I\'m pretty sure that\'s the source of your problem Maiden. I have the same specs except with a 256mb GeForce FX5200, and PS runs like a dream. :)

Ah, that might just be it.  I don\'t think I\'ll be switching video cards for a single game any time soon, so I guess I\'ll have to deal with it :p

I mean, it\'s fine and all, just hangs while commencing battles sometimes.  Bit of a pain when walking around the sewers with vultures following your every move.

Not sure if its the same thing but mostly in the sewers the screen \'resets\' and flashes every few seconds. Otherwise the gameplay is fine except for the occasion where it randomly goes to the loading screen that appears after choosing character. It then loads and returns to the game.

Burntleaf, that loading screen is when you change maps (from Hydlaa Plaza to Hydlaa Sewers, Hydlaa Plaza to Arena, etc)  It\'s loading the map for that area, it just uses the same background picture because they haven\'t yet made \"Loading (insert location name here)\" images.

As for the flashing, I\'ve experienced that in the forest when the shading changes (I guess there are issues with the lighting algorithm or whatnot).  It only flashes briefly when I enter and exit the forest and looks like it\'s trying to render a lightening storm ^_^;  I don\'t believe this is the same thing, though.  What I was experiencing was a bottleneck on account of my video card.

edit: It flashes in the forest, and in the Pub.  Both instances involve chaging the shading, so I guess it\'s something funky with whatever algorithms take care of shadows/shading.

o, thanks, but you know that really makes me look stupid. Also, i didn\'t mean flashes as in light, i ment the screen seems to move or refresh very quickly.

Ah, could it be your internet connection?  What\'s the FPS count when you experience this?

Er...I\'m mainly asking out of curiousity, I guess.
