Maybe it\'s not clear for everyone. Or maybe it\'s not clear for me.
Everyone heard rumors about it. \"The Great Wipe shall come to clean your powkets and your head.\"
Since the news, about a wipe to come, was posted early after the releasing of CB, many are thinking that it will come soon.
But I am not sure everyone catches *why* the great wipe will come. I am not sure either. Here is what I understood.
What we call CB, Crystal Blue, is the alpha release of Planeshift. Not the beta as some other rumors are letting people think.
If we go back in time, what happened. We were in the pre-alpha tech demo, called MB, Molecular Blue. In the meantime the team was working on the alpha using new technologies avaliable - a hard task to restart from 0-.
The story of CB:
-Devs are testing alone, the alpha testing.
-Devs are opening a server for few selected testers, the closed beta.
-Christmas 2004, everyone can test CB, the open beta testing.
=>this is where we are.
- new features added, bugs discovered, cured
- cheats and exploits performed, patched
- changing the balance between spells, weapons, monsters, prices, armors, crafting, quests... to give everyone the same chances.
So what will we have after that? a lot of people with too much money, experience, training, because they expoited or were granted unfair advantages or simply used an advantaged way (by choice or luck). Once cured...it\'s time to end the \'open beta test\' and release the alpha.
** Here comes the wipe **
The alpha release, CB beeing done, the team can work on the beta release, codename SB(Something Blue) while players are in CB.
Now, consider how early in the development cycle of CB we are.
Optimists are saying that the wipe will come in a few months.
Everyone who lived in MB since the first planned release date in october 2003 heard this before \"in 2 months\" then the world famous \"Soon\".
Why wouldn\'t the wipe come before the end of development? because each new feature can have a bug giving an unbalanced advantage to its users.
Doing a wipe after each bug cured/formula updated would make our lives repetitive. Only major database breakdown would make it necessary to wipe. So far only a few rollbacks were enough (2/9/5).
Why was everyone warned about the wipe so early?
Imagine what will happen when, after months of trainings practicing, all will be wiped. We will hear a lot of cries...And it will be possible to tell them \"you were warned.\"
So don\'t worry, all what we do today won\'t be in vain. We can look for bugs to help the cure to come faster (use petitions), we can experiment, take some risks, learn how we will have to live...
There is one thing that will not be wiped: the friends we will meet before the wipe.
So unless I am totally wrong, people should not complain about changing spawns, new/gone/moved trainers, training for nothing.
