Nice pet/friend idea
« on: April 02, 2005, 09:09:48 pm »
I got funny idea to this great game; a pet. But, not just normal cat or dog, SPEAKING pet. Like advisor. I spoke with it/he/she 15 min. , and it was fun. Maybe weird, but fun. Think it; pet who follows you, sometimes help you in battle, and of course, speak with you. Maybe it can say some tips, just speak about weather, or anything between earth and heaven. Or even comments about you. Think this and tell what you like.

Aslong as the devs dont make 150 of them availible and boy would things fall under anime-wierd.

But pets is something that will be implimented but on the talking part I dont know.
*finds it wierd for a clacker like creature to start talking to him*

These are called \"familiars\" and are planned already. That\'s why there is the skill \"empathy\" in your skill list.

Yeah, i\'m waiting when \"empathy\" skills is ready. But when you make pets, what they are? Small dragons?  Big things like Tefusang? Rats? And what they can do?

Btw, where i can train empathy?

Because Talad has said \"there will be no dragons in PS\". So, there won\'t be. :) It\'s part of the whole messed up, contradictory term \"we want to be as unique as possible\", after which hundreds of people point to the elves, dwarves, and humans. So, now that I\'ve already typed the following 2 page discussion on uniqueness, there\'s no need for anyone else to divert to such a topic. Ok? Good. :)

On the subject of pets- of course we\'ll have them. An RPG would be nothing without. :) But I have no idea whether they will be \'special\' creatures, or just things you can find all over the world like Teffys and rats.

Would serpents be classified as dragons or not

I doubt it. Look at Carkarass, they\'re basically winged serpents- but they\'re not dragons.

Sarrow you really have something against clackers huh :P

I think the \'pet\' idea as in familiars isn\'t bad but having them speaking normally would be rather odd in my eyes. It would be interesting if they spoke their own simplified language which the master then had to learn to give them commands.

hmmm LOVE the idea of the familiar. Hope to be able to train them to. Would be funny if you had people with familiars who were better at fighting then them becuase they trained their familiar in fighting but trained themselves as herbalist or something ;)

What creatures would the be though? Well thnking probably smaller then you yourself though perhaps larger then you at the top levels. I\'m not sure. Perhaps they\'ll even make it so you can raise it so it grows as it gains experience or something  like that :)

Would like the idea of a black panther, but a dragonlike creature to fly on would be great aswell ;)

Common familiars in past games, were usually retained for Rangers, Druids, and Mages.

Mages could use them to aid them in spell casting, protection of an area (depending on the size), or to retrieve things from areas they could not go.  Something like a cat, would be able to go into obvious places we could not fit.

Or a fairy dragon, something like Carkass, could aid in combat, by spell use.

Familars are generally treated in such away by intelligence, and all relationships between master/servant were considered very much as equals.  So much so, that if the familar died, the bond between them wa so great, it causes pemanent loss of skills.

The talking features, I still think are great, this kind of spills into living items (talking swords), and dabbles into a couple other areas as well.  This is a great idea.

Rangers, were usually aided in combat, but a familiar in that sense, is not the traditional type, it could be a magical mount.  Think of Gandalf\'s horse, Shadowfax... but this types of mounts have also been reserved for the Paladin class.  Rangers, could have something like a pixie, gnome, or other small woodland creature, like a racoon, squirrel, or otherwise.

Mage familairs were usually magically summoned.  Where a ranger formed his bond through time naturally through gaining the animals trust.  Which falls into the \'animal trainer\' skillset.

This could get extremely complicated.  But is a traditional part of any good RPG.

** EDIT ** The most famous familiar I can think of, was the mechanical owl, from \'Clash of the Titans\'.  What a horribly cheesy movie, but was it ever cool when I was younger. ;)

Now this idea is just pointless.

No matter what you call it its still a dragon? Thats what a dragon is anyways, a winged serpent or lizzard.

For technicalities, from latin Draco, or Dracon, was used to describe any large serpent.  Not just limited to what we consider the traditional sense of the mythical beast usually represented as a giant, winged, bi-legged, or qudra-ped, fire-breathing reptile, that loved to hoard treasure.

Animal Planet  has been airing a thing on dragons... it was actually kinda cool.

The animations were incredible.  Sorry at little OT.
