Buying new computer?
« on: April 04, 2005, 11:26:02 pm »
My father recently bought him self and my mother a new computer and he has decided to buy my brothers, sister and I one also. He says that we are getting a Gateway? 506GR. Here are the specs:

Processor
Intel? Pentium? 4 Processor 5405 supporting Hyper-Threading (HT) Technology6
Operates at 3.2GHz
1MB L2 Cache and 800MHz FSB

Chipset
Intel? 915G

Memory
1024MB DDR (400Mhz), Dual Channel Memory
Expandable to 4GB

Video
Intel? Graphics Media Accelerator 900
Up to 224MB DDR Shared Video Memory
Audio
Intel? High Definition 6-Channel Audio (5.1)
Hard Drive
200GB (7200 rpm, Serial ATA, 8MB Cache)7

Will Planeshift work on this? I hope it does because I really would like to start RPing. Any answers are greatly appreciated.

Yes...of course, definately. If it runs (kinda) on my slow, old computer, it MUST work on yours. Plus, you pass everything on the recommended requirements even. Well, unless you have dial-up, which is on the minimum, if I recall.

Exact System Requirements which, as I said, you exceed, so it should run smoothly on your new computer. Would you mind asking your dad to buy me one? It doesn\'t have to be as good...just anything better than mine. :P

EDIT: I\'m not 100% sure on how good your video card is, but with the other specs of the computer, I am sure the card is good as well.

I have DSL so I guess it\'ll be ok then. I\'d ask my dad to buy you a computer, but he\'s not happy with me right now. Anyway thanks for the answers and I hope to see you in PS.

That is plenty. I\'ve only got 2.0Ghz Processor and 512 MB RAM, and Planeshift works fine. You\'ve got twice as much RAM as I do.

I would say you have a pretty nice computer. I envy you...

Looks very good except your graphic card (chipset), onboard video mostly sucks except some Nfore mainboards. You\'ll proberly need an PCI Express video card I guess.

That computer is pretty highend.

I personally have an 1,3 Ghz AMD Athlon with 256 MB RAM, Micro Star Inernational video card (256 MB RAM, nVidia chipset (5200 NT or TX or something) and DSL, and I never ever encountered any problem with it.

Do you want to find the flaw in that statement, or should I find it for you?

(Hint: Since when did Apple start making the \"best PC\'s on the market\"? :) )

Highend? Nawh, but it\'s appropriate for people who aren\'t willing to pay the $8-10,000 it costs to make a highend computer. :)

I\'m not quite the Motherboard familiar person, but if your computer supports PCI-Express, the best graphic card would be either a Radeon X800 or a GeForce 6800 Ultra, depending on whether you like. Although, of course, the GeForce will always have that little edge over the Radeon card, because we all know nVidia is just better than ATi. :)

But let\'s not discuss that here. Those two are quite expensive though, but generally you can just check how new those two types of cards are (Radeon and GeForce).. The newer, the better. :)

On an additional note; both Radeon and GeForce cards have some strange extra tags sometimes (ultra, GT, blabla , etc.). Don\'t be fooled by those. Never go for a high number for a cheap price (for example a 5950 GT card (if that even exists)). You can always get a better card for the same money, where it\'s just a lower version number.
