Planeshift: The Expirence. Where are we going?
« on: April 07, 2005, 04:10:40 pm »
Molecular Blue:

Once, in a day long ago, I stumbled across a new world, quite by accident.  The world was small, with little interaction, yet it held a redeeming quality all its own.  Upon entering this strange place I was greeted almost immeadiatly.  I wish I could remember who these people were, but alas, time has stripped that memory from me.

Crystal Blue:

Then suddenly, the world changed.  The world expanded becomming a more exciting place.  With such growth of course came danger, as monsters appeared to have evolved. Entering the world for the first time was different though.  No on greeted my entry, no one welcomed my presence.  I was lost amid a jumble of people, buried under a crowd of people.  There were few familiar faces, and it was an unstable place.  Many times I found myself falling off the end of the world.  Other times the world vanished completely.  Still, I did not despare, for amid all this another place, the Forums, which was alive with discussion.

Interesting and exciting times indeed.  In the Forums there was much to discuss and do.  Helping with technical problems,  starting guilds, RP, and more were happening every day.

Present Day:

Slowly though as time went on,  fewer people frequented the forums, and familiar faces faded.  They retreated to their own sites and forums, or occasionally checked in at the forums.

Many people still occupied the world of Planeshift but they were fleeting faces.  Visiting, then moving on to other things.

And so I as you, what all can be done?   A dynamic world full of new people is good, but there needs to be something to keep people here.  How else can it be that the envisioned future for Planeshift can happen?  Without many people who are dedicated players, who will run shops, manage assets, purchase land, be mercenaries, merchants, etc?

We need a way to make things more interesting to keep people comming back.  Otherwise all familiar things will be lost amid the blur of those just passing through.

Summary: PlaneShift is boring, please add more features.

Answer to summary: Have patience or do like the rest - leave until there is actually a game to play, and not a demonstration of the current - very limited - features. The purpose of CB isn\'t to entertain the masses with a great MMORPG, it is to let people see how far the development has come, and to get a lot of bug reports on the current features. Get it?

If people wish to stay, then good for them. If not, then why bother trying to force them to? A good advice for you is not to have friends that just leave the game because it\'s boring after a week. Stay away from those types and you\'ll be fine. :)

Truthfully I don\'t find the game boring, but I do miss the community that felt closer in the MB release.  I understand the state of the game isn\'t to entertain the masses, but the game is advertised and many people play it.

Summary:

The game isn\'t boring, it just lacks the feeling of community.  This doesn\'t have much to do with features.

Real question:

What can people who care do to make the game expirence better?

There are times when I really miss MB. :(

Join the dev team and get influence on the project, or sit around the forum forever and contribute useless ideas and make pointless topics, and discuss a lot of things that really needn\'t be discussed because stuff like that always settles itself, and... um... Oh yeah, flame people. :)

There\'s really nothing else you can do. At least not at this point.

planeshift is a great place not like many other mmorpg\'s where everyone is out for themselves. here there is more of a community where you can just stand and chat. where do you ever see that happening on somewhere like runescape
<Rux> i wish i could say that narrows it down, but the internet is one freaky place

Too many people complain about the community not being how it used to be. I say, stop talking, and do something about it. These threads just make other people come here and get brainwashed to the same way of thinking- they don\'t do any of us any good.

As a matter of fact Grono, looking at the opening post it appears to me that Induane liked MB more, which was pretty much more of a \"D-E-M-O\" than CB.

I don\'t think he means the project, but the community. A thing that the devs basically have no influence on.

Oh and there is much that can be done without joining the dev team... it\'s just that you don\'t see it. I know what can be done and will strive to do it, as long as my time and abilities let me to do so.

I agree with Induane, were not neccessarily looking for just new features to make the game more fun, we jus need more events for example made by the average player for the average player, someone shud take the initiative n make up little mini stories, this wud create a temporary diversion of politics, exploring and conflict that wud make sure we dont lose anymore players

note: these r only examples of wot i think we shud be doin btw

Right - it exactly what I mean.  I\'m not looking for new features.

I want to do something about it - its why I made this post.  I honestly dont know what to do about it and am asking for help.  I don\'t like the idea that there is nothing I can do, it makes me feel paralyzed, useless.  I love planeshift, and simply wish there was something I could do, or do better.  The problem with me is I\'m not great with outside the box thinking, and I think something new needs to come around, but I can\'t think what.

Well I could always use some more manpower and funding for my project. Seeing that you want to do something to increase the community spirit I think you might want to read this thread: http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=15807&boardid=13&styleid=3&sid=1c8864cdf9fe71119cfe5a38672d9a1a

It \'s a start to create something for and with the community and if you \'re still interested in helping out give me a PM ;)

Its perfect! This is exactly the sort of thing I am looking for.  Excellent idea!  I\'ll contribute all I can as well as doing my best to rally as many of my guild members as I can muster to attend.  I\'ll PM you soon as well.

Grono, Grono, Grono... You have the spirit, but lack the vision, young groundhopper. If I had better hardware and a broadband connection, I would show you what can be done. But alas, with my current setup, I can only achieve an unplayable 1 frame every few seconds.

You see, we don\'t need more content, for we are the content. There is vast potential here, we just have to harness it.

And Induane was not looking at the game. He was looking at this forum. When I first came here just a few short months ago, I immediately latched onto the RP forum as my own. There was life in there. Many, many people came and went, leaving behind their footprints in the sands of PS. I thought, \'This is where I belong.\'

But then something changed. I watched as the member count exploded from 7000 to almost 14000, but somehow the community dwindled. Not just in RP, but all over the forums. No longer did we talk about what makes the Kran tick, or why the Diaboli are the way they are. Now its mostly about killing things, levels,  and new stuff to do.

I had great plans, but reality has stymied me with unplayable lag. I was going to use Arnigus Faymore and the Sheeples to try to breath life back into the game. How? First off, Sheeple\'s need protection. They can\'t defend themselves. Then, I was going to try to start the first PS bank and loan. (which was doomed to fail, because Arnigus is only a semi-successful banker) Why? To give rich players somewhere to stash their money and earn a small profit, and to give the poor new players a base to start with besides killing rats with their bare hands. Loans would have been due in a week or two at 5% interest. Also, the bank would have funded events at a reduced rate. How could\'ve you trusted me? Simple, Sheeples don\'t buy anything. No weapons, no picks, no skills. No reason to spend money.

If that worked, then it was on to greater things, which I may yet be able to achieve from these forums, not even going ingame. Stay tuned, if I can figure out how to manage it. ;)

Well, I\'m not sure how to respond to a sheeple.  I did read the Sheeple foundation thread with extreme amusement.  Would that I could write like that! :)   Are there any other similar initatives to the one Zan mentioned?  Also Zan I sent you another PM.  If there are others let me know.  I\'ll also browse the forums more and see what all I can find.  Thanks everyone for your help.
