I was going to try to start the first PS bank and loan. (which was doomed to fail, because Arnigus is only a semi-successful banker) Why? To give rich players somewhere to stash their money and earn a small profit, and to give the poor new players a base to start with besides killing rats with their bare hands. Loans would have been due in a week or two at 5% interest. Also, the bank would have funded events at a reduced rate. How could\'ve you trusted me? Simple, Sheeples don\'t buy anything. No weapons, no picks, no skills. No reason to spend money.

A word of caution though. If you ever do anything like that - play bank and take people\'s money and give it to someone else - eventually you\'ll dig your own grave, and there wouldn\'t be much character left of you after the GMs would be done banning you. And I doubt anyone would ever give their money away to another player who would \"take care of it\"... I\'m not saying it\'s impossible that some poor saps will willingly give away their money to you, but think about it. You have no way of assuring your customers you will protect the money. You have no way of assuring that you will get back money that you lend to others, and how on earth would you make the money to give people interests on their deposits if you don\'t buy anything, and spend money on doing Bank-funded events? I\'m just curious, because either you forgot to mention something, or that plan of yours has... well, it lacks something. :)

But as for the roleplay talking and people being nice to eachother and so on and so forth, well, I\'ve been around over four years. I\'ve seen lots of people talking about lots of stuff, and I\'ve always had to look at them telling eachother it\'s so sad when someone they know leave, and how sad they are when they leave, but let\'s face it. The friendship of the community just isn\'t enough to keep people together, and you see more and more people leaving all the time. However, what you fail to see is how many more people join every day... I think I lost the thread... Um... Yeah. Anyway, as long as there is no game to keep people going, they\'ll find somewhere else. We can\'t force anyone to stick around if that\'s not what they intend to do, and let\'s face it, the way the demo has developed so far (with all the numbers and such), there is just no reason for friendly people to be around. Sure MB might\'ve been popular, but who cares? We all knew it would die some day, so there\'s no need to cry and moan about it any longer. You can just try and scroll down the list of threads discussing this subject, and you\'ll find that even up to three years ago, people were moaning about how the new people ruin everything and it\'s all just bad and oh no. Put it down, give it a rest. You\'ll get over it one way or another, and continous arguing and discussing it won\'t help at all.

In short, noone cares about content. We can\'t keep people around by making ridiculous events and by having a great imagination. It\'s all about being on the dev team and making decisions there, and getting your points seen. Being a player and trying to do something as a player will only get you to your own door. There, you\'ll trip over your own legs, fall down and die. You\'ll be laughed at or just forgotten and the devs will keep adding more numbers and buttons to click and monsters to kill, and they\'ll forget all about what a roleplaying game is. :)

Edit: I\'m not even sure this post made any sense at all, but... yeah.

I think all that happened was that when CB was released allot of new people suddenly flooded in... This was quite a shock to the old \"MB\" community.

What we are seeing now is the massive flood starting to dry up.  and the community that survived looking around trying to figure out what to do now. Instead of having to swim through all the new people to find each other they are back on the muddy ground walking around a little tired. Taking note of those who survived the flood and looking at new community members that came in with the flood and haven\'t left yet... this is not the old MB community in the confusion there have been changes.

There is still a community and one I feel that will be able to grow as close and string together as the old one. It\'s just that in the confusion of the flood some people from the old community were swept away perhaps not by the flood but It was hard to notice them leaving.

I really like metaphors. :P

The community itself is what I am most concerned with.  That was acutually alot of what was driving me with the URPS.  I want this community to forever be a closely knit group.  I for one will never leave, as much as that may sadden sep.  We need to think of new ways to get people involved in game and out.  In addition, attract new people who have the desire  to stay with the community and help.  I will try to join the devs but if nothing else I will be here to help.

Things are being done to help... I, of course, approve of the URPS.  But I also love the ideas of radiostations, newspapers, and this festival I keep hearing about.

@Grono> ;) I do believe I answered all your questions in that nice little quote.

First off, yes, it is doomed to fail. I made that quite clear.

Second, why would the Devs ban someone for trying their best to make the community better, even if they failed. The world is full of risks. Who knows, it may have even worked.

Third, people are giving away money ingame all the time right now. If it is done in the proper RP manner, I don\'t see why good RPers wouldn\'t contribute some of that money to a bank, knowing full well that they may never see it again.

Forth, trust. There is no hard coding here, just RP. Trust is the only thing that could keep a project like this going. Sure people will get hosed, and the bank will eventually fail, but as the game is in an Alfa stage, so too is this idea. MB was a failure, if you look at the big picture, but look where we are now. The world is built on failures.

Fifth, the big money Question. Works like a long term investment (IRA) You put your money in, and after a set time, you can take it out with a small profit. Early withdrawals would be penalized. Revenue would come from loans. (based on trust) People would have to apply for a loan in a good RP manner, showing that they are not a complete n00b. Perhaps even having to run to the next town on a short \'quest\' to prove their worth. After they got the money, they would be expected to use it for training, weapons, or what not, to earn the money (yes, sadly, probably killing rats) back plus 5% to return to the bank. That would be the quest. People that returned the money on time would be put into some sort of out-of-game hall of fame, while filchers...lets just say there\'s a place for them in the PS Times.

I hope that answers you\'re questions.:)

*edit* typos

Induane, that sounds alot like what happens when anything opens up or gets popular...it changes.

Some bemoan the changes and try to run off the new (people or the state of the game). (kinda like a tiny town that writes ordinances to prevent progress)

Some dream or tell tales of the old, which has a certain value to it, history does matter and can teach us. But eventually it turns into \"Glory days\" (version 45, extended).

Some of the new bemoan the flaws, others wander off, but put the game in the downloads folder with the thought of returning in a year or two...in other words, they hold out hope, but determine that there is nothing here to test...other testers have things under control...so...they are not needing. Plus, if they need a good mud or mush or role playing forum...there is that other one...what was its name again...

Other new fall in, look around...float around a bit...do a bit of this...a bit of that...explore the current world...try a little of the stand in the plaza and wait for someone to say something, mine a little, kill a rat or 12. Then they wander off, more or less not noticed. Some return...others don\'t.

Your post implies movement, and I find it a tad interesting and curious, for that is what I am used to in a test...change...of some kind, not staunch resistence to change for fear of some how dishonoring what WAS.

Does your child growing up, gaining skills and independence threaten you?  I don\'t know about you, but when I got the note from school telling me about acts of kidness that my daughter was \"caught\" doing (holding the hand of a frightened new kid who spoke NO English, and was from a Muslem culture.), tears of pride and joy hit my face.

I would think seeing this game...for one day it WILL be a game...mature, think for itself(the players going off in directions that the devs/older players/testers had NEVER thought of or planned for), stretch its limbs and eventually climb a mountain...I would think the \"guy with the dream\" would stand back and say...\"wow! that is my baby.\"

Games are like babies...one day, if fed, and cared for, they grow, you can either encourage their growth, or starve it and watch it die...Your choice.

As for me, I am of the \"nuture it and let it go when it is time\" school.

Just because the powergamers take over the sewers...where the hard core role players rarely go...does not make them a threat.  *nibbles her lip*
That is unless the noise and ruckus from down there interupts the pub scene.....

Umm how can we pay them if we don\'t lower ourselves to the powergamers level and actually hunt something and *shocked gasp* loot its dead body.

That or mine. *shrug* You have to HAVE money to spend it, in game or out. And somewhere down the line, someone had to loot something and sell it, or mine something and sell it for them to have money to give away.

I tell ya what...you come up with a scarey story...post the time you are going to be in the Red tower reciting it...and I will be there with 10 Tria (I need the warning so I can hunt rats the night before to get the tria).

-------------------------

Ok, let\'s think about this...what are you wanting?

More role play...

Ok, how do you get more people involved with IN game role play?

Not on the forums, but I would think IN game.

If I were you, I would sit at my desk, think up things that were clever, witty, funny, involved either running around grouped and chatting in group (egg hunts, gathering stuff around the game world, trivia contests), telling Scarey stories, telling tales of BRAVE daring do (that would have to be a dream since nothing too big exists...but we could suspend belief I suppose), tell family tales of narrow escape from....umm I don\'t know.

Form a travel agency and start tours for Tria...HEY I like this idea...this one could actually WORK. You would shout that a tour group was forming up (to get the cash, you make them pay BEFORE inviting them to group), then you take them around and tell interesting tid bits about each site (make some of it up if you have to...they are new...who is gonna know...and if it is interesting enough...not even the vets will care),

show them the NPC\'s of interest (Ok, don\'t say This is the \"sword trainer\" How about. This is *name here* he is known the realm over for his amazing use of swords...why I once saw him *rest of story here*.

And this is *name here* he is known for his Titan like strength, tales have it that he can lift twenty men, but I say it is more like 25.
and on and on.

Include the pub and various vendors, include interesting stories about their wares and rumors about their activities.

Stop in front of random buildings with closed doors and make up some story about who lives or works there...the doors don\'t open, no one will know you are just making it up. Maybe say that one is the house of a famous female singer who forgets that her window shades are transparent (show begins at 9pm sharp). Or maybe this VERY spot is the location where *insert made up name of some infamous mass serial murderer* was caught red handed *insert made up name of a guard of some fame...long since retired of course*

If you chose to go on the LONG tour (aka leave the gates) you will need to move into \"scarey campfire tale\" mode. Work with the ambient sounds to spooky the pee out of your tour guests.

I would base your rates on length of tour. (short tour of JUST town, showing which way to trainers, a few good stories to keep em coming back for more, and pointing out the way to the arena, the sewers *DIRE warnings about horrid terrors down there*, and explain the significancy of the statue in the plazaa. this all would be 10 to 15 tria or a bit more if you get REALLY floweredy and good at the BOOGA BOOGA around the red tower and sewers.) (the LONG verison which could extend to Oja and or the Mage tower *there are rumors of wonders and wealth out there were the magic flows...I sware it, me ole grand pappy came back one time with a hunk of gold the size of his head...I sware it!* OR you could have the tour to Oja, and another that is a tour of the dungeon *have each tour guest sign a waver* or whatever. the long ones could be as high as you think that tour would be worth. 50 trias maybe a tad more if you were good with tales of what happened in this vast empty nothing. Maybe you could elaborate on the invisable creatures...honest it is there...you just need \"the sight\" to see them...honest. And describe them with crystal clarity, just to prove you happened to HAVE that sight *wink*)

I want to do something about it - its why I made this post.  I honestly dont know what to do about it and am asking for help.  I don\'t like the idea that there is nothing I can do, it makes me feel paralyzed, useless.  I love planeshift, and simply wish there was something I could do, or do better.  The problem with me is I\'m not great with outside the box thinking, and I think something new needs to come around, but I can\'t think what.

Was that some kind of sarcasm?
Because I don\'t see how that can be compared with doing nothing but leveling all day long...

Anyway, red tower?
Do you mean Laanx temple or something? Because I\'m not going to interrupt people\'s prayers, which (unlike my stories) belong there...

If you point out one player praying or anything, I will convert. I walked in and saw one player standing in the fire pit. I assumed it was for the WOW *excited laughing* this ....is...so...COOL effect. Since the player said nothing and did not move and there is NO /pray emote animation. It was kinda hard to tell if he was stuck, or away from the keys at dinner (in my time zone it WAS that time...coulda been) or deep in meditation (almost asleep) or...prayer.

And not being of the faith...I wouldn\'t know. But my real life pray tends to involve under the breath mutterings that can be half heard some of the time. Plus I tend to pray at home, in private, not in public sharing it with the world.

I would think tales of fear, violence, and helpless torture or under handed goings on would PLEASE this god...if I am remembering the faith\'s back story right.

Well my assumption is that if people of Yliakum were religious enough to build the temple in the first place, then it must be true that this place, indeed, is seeing lots of prayers.
Now what I believe and consider to be true in-character shouldn\'t be affected by lack of role-playing in another aspect. Even if no player character prays in there, it shouldn\'t change anything for me.
I still say that every place has its usage... and usage of story-telling could be found in a tavern, in a camp or in other similar places.

I would rather not run them off.  New players are as important to the future of planeshift as the old ones.  But to me it seems like the newer players are treated with a sort of mild neglect.  There are those that help, but I think they get easily discouraged because they help out people who never return to the game again, and thus feel like they wasted their time.

You see, we don\'t need more content, for we are the content. There is vast potential here, we just have to harness it.

Thats the thing exactly.  It cannot have been said better.  We ARE the content.  New players and old are all a part of it.  Older players I think have more responsibility to be a part of that content.  A human character is much more interesting for a newb (or anyone for that matter) to interact with than an NPC who understands 3 statements and otherwise just cleans the wax from his ears.

The thing is though that with the exception of maybe the tavern and a few small groups of people, there isn\'t much of this kind of content.  Draklar does a great job being content, as do some other people but not enough (I myself am guilty here).

A festival is a great interactive interesting initative.  If it is a success, perhaps it should be a semi annual event?  Draklar was talking somewhere about a way to watch the PS ingame clock and base seasons and the like from it.  This would open the door to more ideas.

Yes I actually did make a topic in the wishlist forum about having a date in the game itself. There already is a clock and moogie assured me that a date and entire calendar would be added in the near future most likely.

A thing like that will definitely make creating some sort of festival a lot easier and also incorporate it into the game more.

Now I would like to say something and I hope this doesn\'t get taken the wrong way but Grono and Lyrah; you guys really need to stop spreading those negative waves. If you believe nothing good can come out of the community you are restricting the community and are feeding just that what we don\'t need. Be a bit more open and try to see and maybe even do some good instead of break down every attempt ;)

*my first try at snipping a quote, please forgive my ignorance or incompetence...I am trying*

I can\'t TELL you how thrilled I am to to know you feel that way. I LOVE to help newbies once I get my sea legs in a game. Share any info I learn. I know it can be HARD to fit in and NOT annoy the old schoolers.

About the no need for new content. Ok, if you are defining content as in game story line...you are SPOT ON right!

But if you mean no need for other features in game, I respectfully disagree with you. I find that animations, loot like lutes, lires, harmonicas, robes/dresses/social clothing that shows, ambient sounds of laughter, cats meowing or fighting, dogs barking, hammer hitting anvil in blacksmiths shop and other sounds you would expect in this games setting (this game got the ambient sound levels RIGHT!! Kudos guys and gals, you are the FIRST out of 10 or 12 games I have either tested of played that got the ambient sound level exactly at the level I would have adjusted background to be!!!!), smoke rising from the pit at the back of the red temple, other TINY little things that grab you the PLAYER and yank you into you the CHARACTER.

And for those that find killing things is detracting from RP, Ok, I agree. In the real world, NOTHING living POPS from nowhere and stands in once spot for hours/forever. Rats wiggle out from impossibly small holes, sniff around for food and spend more time chewing than the average \"game junkie\" spends in game (if a rodent does not chew, their teeth will literally grow into their jaw and skull, it is PAINFUL and might result in death), all animals roam around for food, companionship and sex, humanoids also roam around for greed reasons or to gain titles ranks or possitions of power (rogues would sneek around other players and in reality steal from them as much as kill them, they would also try to steal from other humanoid NPC/mobs. A thief is a thief and most would rather steal and run or steal and NOT get caught than kill).

And I think it would help RP if there were were roaming dogs, cats or dev created \"npc pets\" that were more fantasy than those, and what about kids, most games forget about them, that right there detracts from the immersiveness of any game for me.

There are also factors that could add to the game for ALL player types without detracting from any of the player types.

I am FULLY aware that the devs are volunteer (AKA more than likely have a \"day job\") and \"this is JUST a test\" (yada yada blah blah blah). I am talking EVENTUAL additions over the ENTIRE life of the game (into 2020 even for pity sake, should the web, the game and US all be here still).

(not aimed at any one in particular)
I never said GIMME COOKIE NOW! *stomps foot and generally acts like a spoilt two year old*
My suggestions are just that, if they work *Cheers* WOOPPPEEE! If not...no skin off my nose.

I just hope the wipe comes fairly soon, i\'m not complaining but more n more players are leaving planeshift until the wipe, there\'s just hardly anything to do in planeshift knowing theres a wipe coming (except for playin hide and seek and exploring the entire planeshift map until falling off the end of the world)

I don\'t understand the big fuss about the wipe...
I play CB since december and I can\'t say I care about the time that the wipe is planned (well probably not completely planned) for. I just play as if it was never going to come...
