A question of Ping.
« on: April 08, 2005, 10:25:42 am »
Well my friends, I Arnigus Faymor, have again visited your beautifull city. After much huffing, puffing and sweating, I made it to the top of the very large incline at the base of the building with the red striped columns. Did you know they put one right in front of the door? Odd that. What was I talking about? Ah yes. As you know, I weigh a lot, and it takes me forever to get anywhere. Not a problem, really, I like to stay put anyhow. But as I was walking, I thought I heard a ping, ping noise. So, wondering what it could be, I typed in /ping. Ping answered me, to my great surpise, saying I averaged 560 or so. Which was very rude, I thought, for I weigh only a mere heathy 476.

[ooc]OK, real question: what is a good average ping to have. Just curious, as I know there is no way to change it. :)

400 is average for most, 350 if your lucky ;)
i guess your obesity is blocking the stream of information slightly

I can only say that this is nowhere near necessary. I get an average ping of 450 and it doesn\'t bother me. This is not an FPS, and therefore it can tolerate ping times that are comparatively high.
I am very impressed by the extremely low bandwidth usage. The only thing that actually is bothersome are the lag spikes that occur sometimes. It is my guess that they are due to dynamic information being transferred (like player existance and model data). The fact that this can take up to a second or more is something that needs to be worked out, not the average ping, which is reasonable. Play PS, ynd you\'ll see that you don\'t notice the delay, and what you don\'t notice gameplay-wise, isn\'t a problem, IMNSHO.

pings over 400 are quite noticeble (god forbid seeing a ping if more then 40 people ever played at one time)

its more of a server host issue then anything

id expect once this games out of alpha/beta the hosting will be better

Have you even played PS?
Have you ever been online when 76 people were on?

Well, I have, any from my experience, the ping is perfectly fine. It is independant from the number of players online as well. The hosting is pristine, did you even bother to look up who hosts PS?

You seem to be talking about things you haven\'t even tried, and you\'re not the first to do so.
Use the search function to find the other useless threads complaining about ping times without even having tried to play PS, as well as for the information I am not going to repeat yet another time.

you really shouldnt assume things in life,

really you played with a whooping 76 players online?

WOW ....im not impressed as thats not even close to a number of players  in a game  considered a mmorpg

I agree with Seytra, that a much lower ping isnt really needed  (yet)

now if you see pings round 400 with 76 players,

But wait till theres 7,600 players, then you see a ping so high you cant play when it bogs down.

Common sense and simple logic is all thats needed to reach that conclusion.

as i stated before, this is a host issue, that should be resolved once the game sees more players or is finished

now, go somewhere else to simply flame, your input was nothing more then a moronic flame with no insight to server stability or how pings change when more people play a game

or the fact the server has 400 ping on average because thats just how it is, its 400 with 4 people, its still 400 when theres 148 people on, thatst he most i\'ve seen. makes no difference, so quit trying to be the hero :)

The network layer actually sleeps about 30-50 ms each turn to not use up CPU.

Generally \'top\' (CPU measure program in linux) take more CPU than the server. I think the server have about 1% CPU load when we have around 120-160 players online (If even that) and our bandwidth usage is a few kb/s.

PS doesn\'t need low pings. DR messages are sent when you change your walking style or max in 5 secs.

And if around 150 players is 1% CPU, that would mean that 15 000 players to 100%.. And then the delays will shorten, you do the maths

Greetings

Yeah.. what he said, besides I have a pretty fast computer. DSL connection, Pentium 4, blah blah blah..
Anyway, what im trying to say, is that i usually have a mid 300 - low 400 ping and im fine. 400ish ping is NOT bad at all. Try maybe a 600-700... then you\'ll see a difference in gameplay.  :))
Of course you should fight fire with fire, you should fight everything with fire.   :P  Xantherus Icer  :P

Come now, people. There is no reason to argue. You\'re scaring my Sheeples and making them cry. ;( Just listen to them sob. ;(

*eats a dozen harlberry pastries, a habit he has when he\'s nervous or scared*

Now look what you\'ve made poor old Arnigus do. With all your fighting I have gained even more weight. I was talking to Ping again yesterday, and he said I now weigh 590. Outrageous! I\'m going home until you stop bickering.

*grabs another dozen pastries on the way out*
