Fanfics, the new addiction
« on: April 19, 2005, 04:50:52 am »
ok, im just wondering how many of you people have heard of/participated in one of these fanfic things. From what i can tell its just a bunch of people going on random websites and making up really messed up stories. I have like 3 friends that are totally obsessed with reading and writing them, and i was wondering if someone could tell me why they are so great...they seem stupid to me. :D

What fanfics are you talking about? I read some fan-fictions from time to time, mostly ones written about Final Fantasy games. The best fanfic I\'ve ever read is called \"I Know What Lies Beneath the Snow Fields\", and is about Vincent Valentine from FF7. It\'s 98 chapters looooooooong and takes months to read. :)

I don\'t see how \"most\" fanfics are bad. What ones have you tried? There are, literally, millions of fanfics for all different games, books, movies, whatever. I\'m guessing you\'ve half-heartedly searched Google for five minutes and found some lemon/lime stuff that has brought out the insecurities of the male psychy making you hate them all without even trying something else. :)

Is that referring to me? *grins* No don\'t answer, I\'ll just assume it is and stay in my happy little world.

Fanfic is one of the lower forms of writing (no offence meant), and is often done to entertain one\'s self, as opposed to others. Some is good, some...not so. I, myself, could never write for the well established storylines of such games as FF or Halo. ( Ya, I know) Not enough room to the expand, and I would feel as if I were using them as a crutch. That\'s why I like PS. It\'s a blank slate.

These fad Fanfics you talk about are...well, I\'d rather not go there.

i just dont see the big deal about all these fanfics. They are just a bunch of random people writing random stuff in their free time. I mean, ik people that spend hours every day reading this junk (thats what i think it is). What is the big deal??

gwaths, your narrow-mindedness here astounds me. You do realise you\'re insulting everyone who\'s ever written a story about Planeshift? And that includes me.

Not every fan-story falls under the frankly unheard of category you seem to have stuck in your mind. God knows where you found them, but I wouldn\'t even call what you are describing \"fanfics\" if they are truely as bad as you make them sound.

Writing fan fiction is just another way to roleplay. People do it in whatever style suits them. If you don\'t like someone\'s storytelling style, don\'t go saying \"all fanfics are dumb and stupid\"... that\'s like eating some repulsive foreign meal and declaring \"that\'s it, I hate food, I\'m never eating again!\"

Well gwaths if people didnt write you wouldnt have songs, movies or even video games.. actualy many popular series started as a good Fanfic ;)

Not all of it is bad, much is good.. sometimes its funny to laugh at the blatently bad ones (ones made to be bad and satirical .. like \"l0rdz 0f t3h r!ng0rz\" )

And youre a random person as well.. and your post, a random writing :P

You don\'t count, Moogie. You never finished yours. ;)  :P

I don\'t think Gwaths is reffering to actual fanfic, but \'fadfic\', if I may coin Foresteer\'s word. A lot of which is pure mindless gibberish, shallow and piontless without caring for your matterial. Like CSI. True fanfic is all about expanding a world that you enjoy. I doubt if he meant any of us.

*glares at Gwath*

Right Gwath?

*prepares to hit Gwath over the head with \'The Book of Yliakum\' if he gets the wrong answer*

Ok, i didnt mean that all fanfics were bad, just the ones i have read. And my actual question was why do people spend so much time reading and writing these? And im not attacking the people that write these and saying they are all stupid, im saying that i just dont understand the stuff that they are producing, just like baseball, but i wont go into that now. I wasnt trying to offend anyone, im just a confused kid. And like Under the moon said, i might be reffering to \"fadfic\" even though idk what that is either.

why? frustrated fans who that character x should have really end up with character y. or they wonder what would happen is foo rather than bar happened. or even what would happen if two series where to meet face to face. or even totally unrelated story lines set in the same universe.

to understand, find fanfics about a tv or movie series that you have seen much of. and read a broad selection of them. like much of the stuff in the roleplaying section it will vary in terms of quality.
may laanx frighten the shadow from my path.
hardly because the shadow built the lexx.

To add to Steuben\'s \'why\', some do it for the pure enjoyment of creating something. To breath life into mere words, making them speak to others. Some use them as a way to reach out to people to express their joy, glee, pain, sorrow, or anger. I do it for a little of both. And to exercise the old gray matter.
