So I\'m instaling my linux again soon. Its a Fedora Core 3 (Redhat based).

So I need advice on how to customize my Linux. As in, what programms should I get?

What I plan to instal -

Browser - Firefox
Text editor - emacs
Programming tool - nedit
Chat client - Gaim (http://gaim.sourceforge.net/)

What else I need (recomendation\'s needed)-

Audio/Video player (I think WinAmp has a Linux version)
Free IRC client
Whatever else

As programming tool, I\'d suggest the Anjuta IDE. I really love it, but it is a complete IDE, which might be too much for your needs.
As for video player, I use Totem (with Xine). You can also install OpenOffice.org. Maybe also Abiword might be stable by now, but I haven\'t checked it recently.
There is no X version of winamp, but the XMMS looks like it and can do similar things, even the winamp 2.0 skins work with it.
I use X-chat for chatting. Don\'t forget the GIMP!

Well I have no idea about linux but for irc I use chatzilla. It\'s a plug in faldrok showed me. I find it much better than mirc since i hate the bulky windows and stuff in mirc.

Media player, i would reccomend Quintessential. Its a lot like winamp without all the problems and it has better music quality. Its free so anyone who is sick of minamp, wmp, or real should give it a try. :)

Edit: just reminding you taht Quintessential is normally for windows and i dont know jack about linux so I don\'t know if it\'ll work on linux or not >_<

IRC client - xchat
Audio/video - mplayer should handle most video.  I use noatun most of the time for audio.

mozilla + squid + privoxy = browsing goodness
enigmail/gnupg/gpa
openoffice to handle office documents that gnumeric and abiword cant
dia for flowcharting & diagrams
lyx for engineering/scientific/mathematical writings
gftp/wget/ncftp/bittorrent/rsync
mplayer - swiss army knife of video ( and audio ) players
grip for all your audio ripping/encoding needs
gtkam for digital cameras
gnokii for mobile phone stuff
xmms
courier-imapd
mysql
distccd

I think of winamp as the windows version of xmms. Which is probably an insult to the xmms developers, I have heard nothing good about winamp at all post 2.x series..  I have no idea of what version its at these days.

One other thing of note, RedHat used to supply their linux distribution without mp3 support. I dont know if this is still true for the fedora series, I moved away from all things redhat post RH9. Ogg Vorbis rules the roost when encoding .wav files, but .mp3 support is nice for historical back-compatibility with older encoded files.

It does indeed still go for Fedora that MP3 support is left out entirely. If you plan on using your computer for mp3 playback, don\'t use Fedora or Suse 9.3 and above (they will also be removing mp3 support, bar in RealPlayer which supports it binarily).

As for programs, here\'s my list:
* Kontact for PIM (email, adress book, news, rss reader, calendar)
* Apollon for file sharing (legal only of course ;) )
* Konqueror for local and network browsing (file and web and just about everything else)
* KDevelop for development
* Quanta+ for web development
* Kopete for Instant Messenging
* Konversation for when Kopete\'s IRC plugin plays weird
* The GIMP for graphics work (Krita isn\'t really up to the job)
* Inkscape for vector graphics
* Kaffeine for videos
* amaroK for music handling (and I do that a lot)

Gaim is an IRC client too, so you don\'t need another program for IRC.
