Steel Blue
« on: May 07, 2005, 04:14:08 am »
Please just answer this in some sort of way besides \"I don\'t know\".

I have heard in a couple posts the mention of Steel Blue and \"when Steel Blue comes out...\".

I was just wondering when it will come out.  Even a relative time is nice (ex. a week, 2 weeks, 6 months, year, 2 years, etc.)

If you noticed, I said \"Please\".

As a rough guess I would say maybe end of year.  We are planning updates around once a month so the transition from this to SB will not be as dramatic as the MB-CB transition.

I thought it was to come about gradually in the updates?  Or is it all in a single package?  Anyway, what can we expect in it?

What I have in mind for that is to branch the CVS each time we do a montly release.  And I can provide a build/install script that will automagically use this branch and launch the updater to get any graphical updates.  I think this is a better way than providing binaries which we\'ve never really had much luck with.  Also this way we can fix bugs in the branch and linux users will be able to re-run the script and have a better client than the windows people.

thanks for your answer acraig.  I appreciate it :) .

Just something to consider and keep in mind:

I was talking in-game with people the 2 things that people wanted most were:

1) a thieving system.  Some of the people who want it, aren\'t going to be thieves.  They only want it to create a less goody-good world and make more of a balance between good and evil.  (I myself want to be a thief).
I wrote an example of how this could work in the wish list in a topic named something like \"player government/theif skills/other stuff\"

2) jobs.  People want jobs so they can make even a small income of money where they don\'t have to kill rats for it.
Seeing this, I also wrote a topic in the wish list titled \"jobs\".

Just keep this in mind.  I agree and think these would make a great game and world.

I think that the more things that a player has to actually do in game, be it killing a different mob, grouping to kill a bigger mob, crafting, mining, questing etc the less of the crowding around one or two mob types hitting the agro button, then 5 to 15 seconds later hitting the loot button.

I would think that improving the variety of mobs and number of spawns, and either upping loot drops or the values of the items that are dropped, OR lowering the cost on training up, should be a higher priority than thieving or stealth.

Maybe having a larger world would help too, right now most of the game feels like playing in a shoe box.

Think of SB as a over hyped game with 60% of its build in the dev\'s heads, 10% on coffee napkins, 15% in modeling programs/portfolios, 5% floating/strange places.

As i\'ve heard that SB is being released update after update.. so in a couple of months/years boom we\'re at SB.
