Claymore = Area Damage?
« on: May 08, 2005, 09:54:00 am »
From what I can tell, claymore deals 66% more damage than falchion, but falchion is three times as fast.  I don\'t know what the moddifiers are for deffense, but I can\'t think of a practical reason why they would be different.

When two fighters with great swords attack one another, they usually do it from behind the protection of shields.  They take turns bashing eachother and blocking, and the winner is usually not the one who sustains the most injuries, but the one who tires first from the impact of being hit and from constantly lifting and swinging the sword.

That\'s the real life application.

Falchions might actually provide more deffense than a claymore, because (in real life) you can have a weapon in each hand, and dedicate one to parrying and the other to slicing and disabling your openent.

Now, the suggestion!

Give the claymore area dammage.  That means, if a player is surrounded, he can attack all the enemies around him in one swing.  It\'s pretty obvious how this would be done in real life, and also that it\'s realistic.  If you\'re surrounded, you aren\'t going to attack one guy at a time if you have a huge sword!  You\'re going to swing that baby around and force them to either keep their distance or be sliced up a bit.  And with such a move, you aren\'t going to just injure your target, you\'re going to injure everyone that\'s attacking you.

I think a similar mechanic would make the claymore worth more of the 800 tria cost it\'s given in the game.  For 800 tria, you can buy two falchions, and each falchion deals more dammage than a single claymore.  Of course, the disadvantage is that in 1 on 1 combat, the area effect of the claymore is useless.

I would say that every sword should have area damage.  (more or less depending on length and weight)  It\'s just that with the existing targeting based system this would be hard to implement.  You might be able to damage something next to your target, but without the ability to just swing the sword un-aimed in the general direction of the enemies this wouldn\'t be that useful.  I\'d say this is a good idea that might be a long way off...
