Dev Forum
« on: August 29, 2002, 03:23:00 am »
I think there should be a forum dedicated to fans wanting to discuss game-type development. Where we could talk about areas like all the facets of programming that go into a making a good game (particularly RPGs) and also talk about 3D modeling, which seems to interest alot of us. Also the more expirienced could educate the curious on tips, tricks and resources in a place where it would acctually be completly on topic. But, this is just my opinion as a long time programmer and now short time 3D modeler :D

Yeah, I agree, I second that idea. I would really like to learn more about 3d modeling. And understand the elements of programming a little bit better.

I think i stumbled upon this a while ago. There is already a Dev forum, for diff sections of the Dev community, like PR, 2D, 3D and stuff. The only problem is that we are not allowed in there, since u have to be a Member of the team, or something. ?(

yeah, thats what i thought, i think they may use those to coordinate their work both in and out of department (though this is just speculation). but i wanted to establish one for us lowly non-devs to mingle and discuss

That is the basic design set up for the Wish List. It is where the fans are to post their ideas for game development.

but a dev forum would be focused on just more or less learning more about programming, 3D modeling, etc. not secifically geared towards PlaneShift, it goes along the lines of educating people who want to be educated and sharing resources, which is what Open Source (PlaneShift is atleast partially open source) is about.

It\'s simple. everyone with the little blue stars can acces the dev forums :)
<Worf> These are the moments when my ego gets put back on the ground. I use linux for quite some time, and am soon 2 years maintainer of a linux distribution. I started to think I would be good at it. But then I tried to get planeshift running.

I get blue stars in my Lucky Charms... does that count?  :D  But for serious, I think we should have a forum topic that talks about 3d modeling and programming. It\'s a very popular topic in the general discussion and almost big enough to be it\'s own topic.

yeah, it also gives a place for people to show off their work without posting in  the PS discussion forum(which is kind of off topic). Just to reiterate my idea for claritys sake:

The dev forum i speak of is a forum for discussion between regular forum users about programming and 3d modeling in general, it is not related to game design specific to PlaneShift, it would be all-encompassing.  It would be great to have a place where those of us already in the programming/3d community to have a place talk about it, and i think it would also get some people interested in programming/3d and give those interested fellows a place to find links to places about learning, and ask questions of the community. Hope this clears up any confusion about my idea :D

Actually there\'s a lot of 3D or game development forums around: http://www.cgtalk.com and the forums of highend3d.com are just 2 examples out of 1000. I think that it would be more correct to use those if you\'re interested in learning/general discussing about 3D, since those forums are there just for that; PS forums, on the other side, are dedicated to the community and to the development of a specific game, so \'contaminate\' them with something non strictly related to it, would only create confusion and distract from their real focus. Adding non PS specific forum topics could bring us (developing this idea to an irrealistic limit) to have cuisine or gardening topics on PS boards, and I don\'t imagine how this could help us create a better game. :)

well, even though it would be more proper to use them, often times when someone new comes, they ask about 3d dev and programming, so if they are just going to do it here anyway, they might was well have a place to where its not off topic, plus a dev chit chat forum would help further the more established community relations

for what i see on the forums, a lot of dev\'s already read most of the tpoics and also reply most of them, when its needed.
So the dev-player communication is pretty high on this forum.

The point of a development forum is for FANS to talk to OTHER FANs about game development in general, but this is pretty much a moot point anyway.
