What questions to ask?
« on: August 29, 2002, 02:57:12 pm »
Ok, I?m going to ask the invitation to play in a different way. Because I didn?t get the information I wanted.
But thank you to all who replied. Many of the comments where insightful and it is perhaps one of the better threads, at least from my point of view :-).

Here is a new question along the same lines.

If we had 4 servers, all exactly the same, except that each covered different demographics of playing styles. And we where using a questionnaire to fit the different playing styles together.

The 4 play styles would be.

Power Gamer , for those who being the best and having the best equipment is the most important. Quote: ? I want the flaming cat of 9 tails, I don?t care that it is pink, it is the strongest weapon for my character right now ?

Casual Gamer , for those who having a good time in small doses is the most important, and when the game becomes a chore, it is time for a break. Quote: ?the quest takes 10 continuous hours minimum, and it gives me a sword that is better then mine and a court rank, that?s not worth it, I?ll do without it .?

Role-Player , for who their standing with other characters and being someone they are not is the most important. Quote: ?Me not care dat Club be not good like hammer, me like sound club make when me bash wid it ?

Whiny-spoiler Gamer , who would rather be given free stuff then earn it and is annoyingly loud about it. Quote: ?hay man got some tira you can Spare?...what 3 lousy tria, you have the golden cloak of the avenger and the sword of the avenger?you can solo a dark knight and they drop at least 300 tria?I?m just starting I don?t have any equipment you should help me out with more then 3 lousy tria ?

I think we can all identify to differing degrees with each, we have all probably been each to one degree or another dependant on the day.

My question is what questions can filter each type into the correct slot.
I was thinking of having something like 40 plus questions with 4 multiple choice answers.

Quality of play is important to us, we are toying with options, one of the contributing factors in play quality is to  play with like minded players?not that you agree with all of them, or even like all of them, but that you all have similar goals for your playing experience.

thanks alot everyone.

When you meet a suffering person, do you
a) derive satisfaction at their misfortune? (power gamer)
b) do you offer your help? (roleplayer)
c) you do nothing. (casual)

If you encountered an unknown creature, would you try to befriend it or automatically attack it?
(role player or power gamer?)

... I\'m not sure some of the styles are valid, but I guess you\'re only interested in trying to obtain some questions at the moment.... I don\'t like the fact that whiners like me get grouped all in one server :(.

I\'m for pvp servers... once you get bored of leveling, or you\'re still too weak to do some quests, you can opt to kill others for fun.

Well, it depends on how CPU intesive the server is.  We can run several servers off of the one machine and just use different port numbers.  But this could kill the poor machine :)

I think this is too simple. Not every power gamer is a sadist. Some of them take on every challenge they encounter (as with helping a suffering man). I think the most people are a combination of this four types. So, for example, a answer could have the value: \"+3 points Casual gamer,  +1 point Power gamer, -1 point Role-player\"

(Idea based on somethign Paxx said)
You are in the middle of the city, searching for a group to enter the Paxx\'s Terror Castle dungeon. How would u call for this group?

1)(Power Gamer) Shouts to all the city \"Lvl 40 Mage searching for a group PTC Dungeon\" how many times be necessary until somebody answers.
2)(Role-Playing) Says to an apparently powerfull group \"Greetings noble amazon. I\'m Princess Aelya, and I would like to ask to join your powerfull group in the hunting for Paxx\".
3)(Whiny-Spoiler) Walks around the city randomly saying \"Hey, anyone wanna join me in a raze in the PTC Dungeon\".
4)(Casual) Shouts to all the city \"Mage searching for a group for PTC Dungeon\" and, after some minutes without having any answer, go alone to the dungeon.

Those multiple choice questions are easily answered, and can be forged with little or no effort. I really don\'t think that anyone would want to be in that \"Whine Little Kid Server\"
How about this, make it work like D2, or something along those lines. Everyone start out in the same server. Than, as ppl lvl, most will do it at diff speeds, the once that lvl to a good enough, would be moved to a diff server, to play with ppl of their lvl, and the once that did not get strong enough, would stay. But this would literarly tear the community apart, since some ppl will not be with other ppl that they enjoy being with.
Plus guilds would be pointless...unless they span over diff server...
This is most likely really confusing, but i have no idea how to make it simpler... ?(

hahaha...funny :) you seriously think id be that friendly? first off the type of character ill be playing wouldnt walk up to anyone and ask to join them. especially not strangers. id ask a guild member or ally or friend.

i know your just giving an example but if your going to use my name use it right ;) ill be playing an evil character. i dont think id walk up to a stranger and say something like that :P

but the thingy about power gamers is they like to be the BEST. so i would assume they would try and get onto the NONE powergamer server so that they could be the best on it... see what im saying?

if u guys can design the game good enough i beleive u can seperate these different groups naturally.

all u would have to do is section off the world so things like high lvl moster spawn and heavy duty training pits are around one area or town (for power gamers)... where places with just average training areas and other things to go like skills and thing are in another (casual).

and an area with like bars, churches, abandon buildings, quest type stuff is in another area... (roleplayers)

this way they will automatically seperate themselves... if there is no need for power gamers to go into the roloplaying area then they wont go there. cause they are too busy lvling up to go bug the roleplayers.

Also this way if a casual player felt liek RPing he could jsut walk over to the roleplaying area he could and vise versa.

To me it seems like multiple servers for different groups is a waste of resources.

I agree with you stickman.

A game should be able to serve all 3 (good) types with one instance of the game.

The point that Alucard brought up, the part about moving to different servers as you level. This could be accomplished simply by creating zones, and putting in some form of level requirement to enter some zones (i dont think a level 1 would want, or ought to be in a difficult dungeon. And i too agree with stickman, we shouldnt segregate the playing population through use of different servers, also if you have 1 server full of 1 type of person, its boring, there is no real diversity in the players

I think the idea of having a different server for each type of player would be very hard to manage and almost impossible to accomplish.  What really is keeping someone from power gaming on the role playing server other than constant monitering from the dev\'s (and I dont think they really want to have to do that).  Different servers for different lvl players would be easier to accomplish, but I agree that it would rip the PS community apart.

I have to agree with stickman that there should just be different areas of the world for each type of player.  An area that is recognized as the power lvling area and another area that is recognized as the role playing area and so on.

I hate to bring up another heated debat, but this idea could also span into the world of pking.  Have areas that are recognized as \"unsafe and unguarded by the kingdom that you travel at your own risk\".  I though of having great highways between the cities that are safe for all to travel, but also have the wilderness around the roads that you walk through at your own risk.

Sorry if that last bit didnt really fit in with the ideas behind this thread.

that last part is acctually a really good idea, it would solve all the needs for PK, though the unsafe zones need to be picked carefully so that they arent areas necessary for travel to other parts of the world and so they arent areas where high levels can pick on low levels. I think there should also be a sign when you enter an unsafe zone that says something like \"Danger: Scoundrels ahead, travel at your own risk\"

Yeah, you don\'t want it to be close to any newbie areas because a wandering newbie in one of these areas.. well... wouldn\'t have too much fun.
