Weapons of the Ways
« on: May 11, 2005, 06:37:13 pm »
okay this is hard to explain so bear with me.
ive thought up a new set of weapons that can cast spells on their own. they are called \"(name) of the way\" ie. \"sword of the way\", \"bow of the way\" etc. now in order to accutally cast spells they requier a glyph to be placed on/in the weapon (not sure yet where) everytime the weilder attacks the spell is cast but if the weapon misses the spell is wasted, other wise it effects the target
example: i have a \"saber of the way\" with the weakness glyph on it and i attack the rat. everytime i miss mana is drained but everytime i hit the rat has weakness cast upon it (mana is still used but at least its not wasted) a \"weapon of the way\" can only have one glyph at a time and the spell is cast at 1.5 times normal mana consumption.

What do you think?

Not a bad idea, in fact i like it a lot  :)

But there is a little problem, to players use those weapons they should be all mage warriors.. I know most of the players have weapons and glyphs but on the future maybe such thing wont happen.. Who knows? In any case its a good idea ;)

it\'s true that mage-warriors or spellswords will get the most benifit form it mages will start doing better damage giving them better returns on everything

also at the moment ps rewards warriors more then mages so it helps balence (even though its small) mages.

Hmm, sounds a little like the FF7 magic system...

Though it does make sense though it would seem better if the weapon had to be made with the glyph rather than being able to take it out and put another one in.  It might also be possible to crush the glyph into powder so that it might be spread more evenly and more wholely throughout the weapon.

That is exactly what I was thinking.

/me pulls out a ridiculously huge sword and proceeds to fight a dark mage with long, gray hair  ;)

I do like the idea, even though it has been done in past RPGs.  Just as long as glyphs don\'t level up, it\'s all good...
I don\'t necessarily like the thought of automagically casting a spell every time you strike your opponent even if it\'s a toned down version of a spell (MP--; !!), so maybe just have the weapon imbued with the power of an element that a particular glyph embodies?

How would mental stamina factor in...?

just wondering, perhaps the weapon itself could have somekind of \"mana\", so the spell would draw mana not from the wielder but from the weapon itself?

weapons with mana.......hmm

Thats a better idea giving the weapons mana.  it would limit the amount of times it could be cast. also elemental weapons are a good idea but it\'s not as flexible as i wanted it to be Indigo. and Kwip your idea of fusing a glyph during the creation of the weapon balences it further.

Also I have only played two final fantasy games. they are mystic quest for snes and tactic advance for advance.

as if taken from Morrowind or another game cannot remember :P

but yeah, it\'s better than making the weapon draw mana from the wielder... and I do agree with Indigo elemental weapons sounds more ideal to me 8)

These weapons should be rare and expensive though. I mean look at how hard it is right now to get a decent weapon. I think to get a weapon as good as these it would cost a lot.

i never said they wouldn\'t be expensive, i was just putting my idea out there for the devs to see cause they realy have the final say in all this.  but any way if i had to guess it would be 500,000 trias more than the weapon price

a few more points to consider, if mana runs out, does the weapon become unusable or act like an equivalent ordinary weapon?

does the spell cast depend on the wielder\'s skill or something in the weapon?

is there a way to \"overcharge\" the spell (with increased risk of failure) like there is for mages casting?

more food for thought...

Well if a weapon runs out of mana, you should be able to get a mage to recharge it (for a minor amount of tria of course ;)), at least I would want that, if it would cost  me 500.000 tria 8o

i like that idea, but the magewarrior thing might be a little over the top.( i do like that) but those weapons of the ways should do more damage if trained in that way, i.e a crystal way sword is better if i trained crystal. they dont need to be magical. you can also see the ways like a religion. you pray by special altars to gain special bonusses from your way and use weapons of that way, they all have special things so you must choose good what way you want.

if you have really cool photoshop tutorials don\'t be afraid to pm me!

pay to recharge it or have it regenerate on it\'s own, i still want to know if it will work as an equivalent ordinary blade *in battle*, after that is academic, especially if i\'m dead because my glyph enhanced weapon became useless when it ran out of mana.
