Chapter II: Remembering the Past
-Prologue-

Sitting in the dark, empty library was he.  The dwarf, of course; Uloim Oakenshade.  Yes, the same dwarf from the horrible happenings at the northern gate, just hours ago.  The same dwarf from the night before, sitting in the tavern as the rest of the town slept.

Wrapping the green cloak around himself, the dwarf\'s head was filled with memories past.  A sigh, and a blink.  A more recent memory came to mind, four or so people sitting in the tavern.  The talk was families and such.  Uloim told them his family had died to the curse of aging.  Old age, bah!  No, the story was much darker.

Indeed, much darker....

Very good, please continue, says I. The reader, of course.... :D

Two things, though. It may get confusing starting a new thread for each chapter. I wouldn\'t recommend it.

Two, why the sudden name change? Is he trying to conceal his identity?

Gah!  *fixes name*
I hate when I do that!  I used that last name on a different game.... and I\'m used to typing it.

I\'ll try to keep the chapters together, although they are kind of different from eachother.  We\'ll see what works best.

Remembering the Past (Part I)

Part I: Childhood

It was a stormy night, as his parents told him.  The dwarf\'s mother gave birth to him in his father\'s house.  Quite the chubby lad he was, from birth to age four or so.  Born with a slight layer of reddish-brown hair atop his head, which was passed to the boy by his father\'s side.  A very strong and nimble child, the dwarf learned to walk quickly.

His first words, spoken in his native tongue, were translated as something similar to \"buckler\".  The boy now climbed all over furniture, rocks, and in later, stairs.

His strength grew and grew, the young Uloim was stronger than even he thought himself.  Accidently, the boy broke things or hurt others while playing.  Accidently.

During much of his childhood, the boy pretended to be a glorious knight and fought off the villainous chairs and tables that were caught in his path.  The battles continued for ages until the overseers demanded the warring to stop.  Uloim loved his parents, and they loved him back.  Never would the dwarf disobey them.  And he never did.  Not once.

No, not once.

Part II: Adolescence

The lad took care of his mother as his father was away much more those days, working far away.  Uloim became the man of house, and his mother, who schooled the boy, helped out at a bakery to pay the monthly tax.  The boy joined a fight club in his free time, and kept himself strong and dexterious.  A champion two years in a row he was, making his father very proud.  Whenever his father did come home, the man brought bags of gold and many gifts.  Uloim asked his father what he did for a living many times, and the answer was always the same.  \"I am a businessman.\"

The boy grew much facial hair, and never cut it.  As all dwarves know, much of your honor is in your beard!

For many days at a time, Uloim\'s mother had horrible headaches.  She always seemed nervous about something, and whenever Uloim mentioned father returning to cheer her up, she almost became watery-eyed.  Something had to be done about this, but the young Oakenshade could think of nothing besides bringing his mother to the apothecary for a potion.

Part III: Adulthood

On the day Uloim officially became a man, his mother had the worst headache of them all.  To the apothecary the two went, one last time.

The apothecary had a special potion for such a case, and it was very cheap because the shop was going out of business.  Uloim bought the potion for his mother, and the two brought the potion home so the woman could drink it with a bit of wine.  But something happened...

The woman became very ill.

To the healers the two went.  Uloim had to wait outside the building as his mother was treated.  For nearly an hour he sat there, waiting.

Waiting... and waiting....

And then the healer came out to speak with the man.  Grave news he had, Uloim\'s mother was dead.

Poison!  The bottle she drank with her wine, it was nothing more than poisoned water!  To the apothecary Uloim went, but he found nothing but an empty building.  The dwarf destroyed the place, and walked away.  The cursed b*stard!  If Uloim was ever to catch up with the apothecary, the dwarf would surely bring him doom.

Uloim wept as he wrote a letter to his father, of the grave news.  For a year, Uloim worked his arse off to pay the taxes.  Yes, it was a year before he heard news from his father.

The dwarf\'s father arrived at the home one late night.  An axe in hand, he spoke to the boy.

......

\"Uloim, yer mother died fer a reason.  Everythin\' happens fer a reason, boy.  Y\'know that, righ\'?\"
Uloim nodded. \"Aye, father.\"
\"Well, \'tis time ye learned some thin\'s.\" his father said, a slight nervous tone in his voice.  \"I\'ve not come t\'speak with ye.  I\'ve come t\' do business.  That is what I am, a businessman.\"
The old dwarf sighed, and gripped his axe. \"Yer mother\'s death was not a random murder by a potion seller.  H\'was paid.  Paid t\' sell yer mum some poison t\' drink.\"
Uloim\'s eyes widened, and he shouted, \"Who would do such a thing?!\"
\"It\'s time I took responsibility fer me actions, boy.  \'Twas I who paid the apothecary.\"

Part IV: To the Present Day

Uloim fell to his knees hearing this. \"You.... W-wh...\"
\"Why?\" his father frowned at Uloim, \"I am a businessman.  A... \'rogue\' as they call \'em.  Assassin, thief, any o\' them \'shady businesses\'.  I\'d tell yeh why I did it, but it\'d kill yeh.  Speakin\' o\'which...\"
Uloim\'s father took a step closer to his son, who would dare not move.
\"Fergive meh, son, but yer time is now.\"
The old dwarf raised his axe above his head, gritted his teeth, and brought it down toward\'s Uloim\'s head!  And then....

Thwunck!  The old dwarf dropped his axe, and fell to the ground, dead.

......

Saved by the town\'s fletcher who happened to be in the right place at the right time, Uloim thanked the man by giving him much gold, and even possession of his house.  Uloim left with few items, and was never seen by his village again.

Seeking purpose and answers to questions, Uloim joined a guild as a spy.  He spied on enemy guilds and was almost caught a few times.  He actually enjoyed the work, but decided not to get too deep in such \'shady business\', so he quit, and left.

Many questions were left unanswered, many dreams still haunted the dwarf as he slept.  Continuing to seek purpose, the dwarf found his way to Yliakum.  How?  One\'ll have to ask him oneself.

Epilogue

Out from the library came the same dwarf.  The same exact dwarf from the happenings of last night and the horrid happenings from just hours ago.  To the tavern he walked, so slowly, so quietly.  Indeed, so many questions remained unanswered, and someone just had to know the answers.

Someone.

...But who?

Sorry, it was kinda more boring than what I had in mind.  This chapter was made pretty quickly like the last one... :(

The next parts should be better.

It might be confusing if I make several threads, but I\'ll keep a timeline at the top of each chapter.
