Well I am not a programer, but I have eaten lunch in the same room with one.  I can assure that everything would be finished on time and have zero bugs if it was not for the fact that all programmers stay up till 4:30am playing Starcraft.

AAAAAAAAAAAgh!

Every forum I go there is one or a few server down topics!!! ARRRGH!

Do you think that the admins are keeping it down so long because they are
mean or something? It is down, because it has to be down. Dot.

Or maybe do you think that they are going to hide the facts of starting the
server again from us or they are too stupid to think about making an
announcement that server is running again? I don\'t think so. Dot.

Regards.

Well, its tuesday now and its till not up. I mean what kind of development process is this?
Just because they\'re not getting money, its still not nice to lie. Just don\'t say anything, cause lying makes my hopes go up and then they come down again. Rather if I just forgot about planeshift for a while.
And did I hear rite? this isn\'t the wipe update!
WTF, how long do we have to wait.
And don\'t give me that s*** (I sensored that myself cause even the censoring machine isn\'t working) about \"we don\'t know\", how do you not know, wtf wrong with these people. Look at the bugs and tell us how many are left to fix before the damned wipe.

i am a programmer, and i can say that at least one of us does not play starcraft at all, let alone till 4:30am. and i have yet to have a first revision that was bug free.

with each revision, there is the possibility of introducing new bugs. can you predict those ahead of time?

Welcome to the real world of system development. ;)
Well, in this case I suppose it would be game development.

Management always likes giving users optimistic goals, but as soon as they hit a snag...the users bite back.  Ah...I\'m so glad I\'m going into East Asian Studies instead of Computer Science this fall. :)

while(!mouths_shut(users)){releasedate+=release_time(prog_fix); prog_fix++;}

A development process run by volunteers who have to work on this in their free time and have other very time demanding things to do.

We were not lying. We expected the update to finish in the weekend. Unforeseen problems came up. So we haven\'t finished.

The problem with bugs it that often new bugs arrive. Also there is again the problem of finding free time and resources to fix those bugs. None of the PS devs is working on PS full time. We all have full time jobs, school, and other stuff to attend too as well (I myself have a full time job, three children, a house and a garden, ...).

Also what is your problem exactly? We are providing you with a free game. We don\'t have ANY obligations to you at all. It is our game. We make it and we work on it when we please. If you don\'t like that then please leave.

Greetings,

Lying is against the law.

PS: it doesn\'t matter if you intended to lie, the thing is, wether you ended up giving false information in the end or not.
And you did.

But it doesn\'t really matter to me, it just might...to someone else, maybe.

PS: I am grateful for the game though.

First lying is not against the law in general human interaction. It is against the law in court but we are not in court here.

Secondly we didn\'t lie. The information turned out to be incorrect but we couldn\'t know that in advance. If you really believe the server will be up after the weekend then it is not a lie. It is just having false hopes.

Now, now, Jorrit.  That wasn\'t a very nice reply.  Maybe we don\'t see or understand your side, but you don\'t see ours, either.
Regardless, of the the game being free or not, the programmers made a committment to have the game back up by Monday.  And regardless of being an excuse-ridden programmer, the game should have been back up at that time or at the very least, another posting with an explanation and another time.
People can get addicted to things.  This game is one.  That\'s why the anxiety, and maybe they really like the game.  You should have known that before you put the game online.  If you did not want to contend with this kind of audience, you should have had a closed alpha, or beta or whatever.
But don\'t come across to us that just because you are devoting your free time that this is YOUR game and we are snivling idiots.
You are taking GOD-MODE  too far.

Exactly how could \"New client should be released on Sunday or Monday if there are no major problems.\" be a lie? (Quoted from laanx.fragnetics.com)
The only way I can interpret is that there apparently ARE some major problems. In my experience, there are always going to be problems, and there is no way to predict just how long those will take.

We made no such commitment. See the note at http://laanx.fragnetics.com:

New client should be released on Sunday or Monday if there are no major problems.

Especially note the if there are no major problems. Well we hit major problems.

We don\'t know when it is ready now. We are working on it hard. But we are currently hampered by different timezones and people sleeping when others are not so it is hard to get good progress.

Where did I say you are idiots? I just was complaining about the fact that people are taking our work for granted.

And if they had given no info at all, people would rant that there was no info at all. Different approach, same problem.
And if they had put up the game and the server crashed all the time because the update was neither done nor tested fully, people would rant about the update not being done properly. Different approach, same problem.

Where the heck are you from?  Lying is not against the law.  Lying under oath in a court of law in the United States is against the law, but not lying in general.  Quit acting like a spoiled brat and let everyone do their jobs.

The developers gave everyone an estimated deadline, something that they agreed would be realistic if everything went according to plan.  Sometimes things happen and bugs pop up that were not anticipated.  It\'s called life, get over it.

Then stop acting like a jerk to the programmers who bring you quality entertainment like this.  With users like you, I\'m surprised they keep up with it at all.

The point jorrit was trying to make is that this game is not his life and he has other duties to which he must attend.  He doesn\'t have to listen to whiney users all day long and could quit at any time.  Yet he works on PlaneShift anyway because he wants to make a really great game.  Heck, that\'s why all the developers and WTB members put time and effort into PlaneShift.  They get no money and essentially throw their time away by working on the game, all to please people like you.

So get over it.  There are thousands of other players less vocal than you are and more interested in community spirit.  One can only hope that some of it will rub off on you.
