Support of a Different Kind
« on: May 17, 2005, 07:18:38 pm »
Wow.

I don\'t know if this would be the best place to put this thread, but it really is support, and it is about problems/annoying bugs, but not of the in-game kind. It is however going to be much more board-worthy than some of the posts I have seen thus far.
I\'m a completely new user as well, on top of it one who actually had the luck to get extremely hooked on the game and download it on Friday night - so I have yet to play it as well, and am excitedly awaiting the time that the servers reconnect. On top of it though I\'ll be going cross-country tomorrow, so I\'ll actually be waiting for at least a week or more to try this incredibly enticing game.
However, I am absolutely floored by the complete disregard for...anything humane by some of the posters. I don\'t know if this will be seen as a \'pointless post\' or \'spam\' of a sort, but I DEFINITELY THINK that ALL OF THE INCREDIBLE people that put their own personal FREE TIME into this game need to be given a lot of support from the gamers who so love their game - even those who haven\'t played it yet. I can\'t believe what you\'ve had to put up with - a lot of people would have just said \'Y\'know what? FINE then, you\'ll get NOTHING\' after the harrassment (intentional and non-intentional) that you\'ve put up with.
I just want to be able to thank all of you at once for putting all of your free time into this game, and people that are juggling full-time jobs, college, AND a family DEFINITELY know that free time is a veryvery hard thing to come by as it is! I just felt with all of the frustration I\'m sure you\'ve had to put up with, it\'d be nice and welcome to have some support of your own. I\'ve worked on things where I\'ve put a major portion of my life into it but barely anyone showed real appreciation/recognition for it. Just letting all of you know that you are greatly, immensely appreciated for all of the hard work you put into this game.
I\'m sure countless others would agree with me, especially those who\'ve actually been with this game longer and played with it, experienced how much you\'ve put into it. So, to wrap this up: there\'s some support for yourselves.

Thank you all.

Such rants are always only provoking flame wars. Why not just show developers your appreciation, so they will have some positive motivation to do what they are doing instead explaining such obvious thing, that they are putting into it their free stuff, we are not paying anything for it etc., etc.? Problem is that the people who haven\'t already underestood that Captain Obvious thinks are simply too stupid to underestand it, repeating it all over again is waste of the time, and those who underestands it doesn\'t need any explanation. There are moderators on this forum, their purpose is to get rid of stupid people, they know that there is not point explaining things to the people who seems to be genetically programmed to be stupid, so they are using \"close thread\" function for the sake of us all. I believe you are not stupid, so you will underestand my point here.

Regards.

If you want to have a chat with one of the devs, your best bet is the IRC channel.

Nothing\'s wrong with this thread  IMO, it actually is very similar to my opinion.

But I would have posted it into general discussion though

I realized that it might have provoked another immature flame war, and I did so actually thinking that the post might be removed soon so as to prevent that as well - thus the part where I said \"I don\'t know if this will be seen as a \'pointless post\' or \'spam\' of a sort.\" My apologies for not actually saying that they could remove it if they felt they should - 20/20 hind-sight.
This post was how I was trying to show my appreciation, and perhaps give others the chance to show it as well, because I\'ve put a major portion of my life into something and felt like I\'ve been taken for granted, and no one seemed to compliment/thank me for it - they just saw it as something I should just DO. The fact is, when you\'re in that position, even though it is a bit \'thank you captain obvious\' for a lot of people, those who are working on it really appreciate hearing/seeing that.
Also, yes it\'s really sad that some people just \'don\'t get it\', but the post wasn\'t for them in the slightest bit. Nor was it really for those of us who do understand how much - it was merely an outlet to thank those who are doing it, and even though they know they\'re appreciated, it\'s always better to actually hear it.
Aye, sorry again, General Discussion would have been much better for this.

Thanks again.

I am not slaying you here...yet...but if your think that something may cause a negative reaction then it is alot better to not post, otherwise it is called trolling and is a very bad thing.

People did get kinda\' mean in the AAAARRRCg thread. I think more people need to know programmers and developers. Then they might be more patient. When surgery goes longer than estimated because something comes up no one complains. Apparently these people have never alpha or beta tested games or programs, especially free ones. Of course it takes longer, they still have to live their paying lives also.  I am a lot more understanding than I used to be, but only cause of my boyfriend and roommate, both of whom I have to hlep with project planning and timelines, not to mention being the go between to the customers. It ain\'t easy. But it\'s the way things go. The scary thing is, beta and alpha testing are the things I do to get stress relief from the alpha and beta testing of the programs I\'m trying to sell! How insane is that?

I find this thread a very good initiative, though perhaps a bit lacking in timing ... couldn\'t have said it better myself.

I do not quite understand the negative comments towards this. So it can start a flame war .. truthfully .. what couldn\'t? I think people need to show a bit more positivity and openess towards others instead of being so judgemental.

One thing I would like to add, specifically towards Jorrit but also the other devs who replied in the thread, I commend your ability to stay calm and friendly even when addressed like this. Most people wouldn\'t have handled it that way and in my eyes it shows much more than performing within the given time. Devs who can handle a situation that well and put together a game as fine as PS in their free time aren\'t just good and professional programmers, they \'re good people on top.

Keep up the good work guys!
