You should first start by fighting rats at defensive, no matter what race or class you are, you would benifite the most and fastes by upgraded either melee, sword or axe skills depending on what you weild. Continue to fight rats and when you get stronger and fight rogues etc I suggest you fight on defensive because they cant touch you on that setting.

Yes, the latest patch causes you to fight in normal stance no matter what you choose.  Rats are killable even in normal stance.

More tips:
Kill enough rats to get 4 or 5 progresion points. Sell all of the rat parts you collected for Tria. Then find a trainer for your weapon type. Training cost money. You will need all of it for your weapon skill. You need to train untill you fill up the yellow bar.  This wil allow you to gain skill by \"experience\".

I hope that is not too much of a spoiler for Moogie.  I personally think it needs to be explained better in the manual.  I killed a lot of rats after putting only one point into training and wondering if it really was saposed to take days to gain a skill level.

How much does training cost? I can\'t get a listing ingame, so I have NO idea how much I need to have on-hand...

Oh, and do rogues EVER drop treasure? I killed a few dozen of them (without taking any damage at all, actually) yesterday, and got tons of XP, but no treasure at all...

I believe training costs 42 tria per progression point used. At least it did before the update. As for Rogues, some of them (the ones near Ojaveda) dropped swords. Usually they carry nothing at all, however.

yeah.. training axe, sword or melee cost around 50 trias, training things such as strength or stamina cost much more...(i think)
There is a great system for telling how much training/pp you need for the next level in a skill (if you havent already figured it out)...The small blue bar is how much Progression Points you have, the yellow bar is how much you need to gain the next level, as you train using pp the yellow bar will slowely become green bit by bit and at the point when it is all green, you will have gained a level in that skill.

I hope I have been helpful but try to figure some stuff out yourselff too..it can be fun.  :]

Ohhhhh!!!!
That is what that infurating blue bar is!
Did I miss something in the documentation? Or is it just so obvious that I am the only one who did not know.

A rat can earn you 7 trias (hide+eye), a gobble 1 or 3 trias or nothing most of the time.
Do thougher creatures drop better loot ?
If not, what is the use of levelling in combat skills ?
Sure you get more xp with tougher monsters, but when you need kill 30-40 rats to get enough trias to train, what\'s the point ?

Tefusang drop teeth that were worth about 16 tria before the update. Not sure if that has changed. The point of increasing your skill is to... increase your skill? So that if you boast to a Kran that you can bash his head in with a single blow, you can prove it later after a few drinks? ;)

Well yes, you\'re right Karyuu but (trying to say something that won\'t make me look like a miser, but can\'t), I like gold and loot and stuff and hoarding it until I don\'t even know what to do about it. For that matter, I would be very much interested in a safe box system even if it means renting it.

*grins* So look into mining, eh? I wouldn\'t get too attached to items and stats at the moment, as there are plans of a wipe, so consider your time in Planeshift right now as a chance to experiment with controls, characters, and skills in general.

I agree that some sort of storage systems for coin/items would be nice, but I think that\'s quite a ways down the road ;)
