Direct Rendering not working with Planeshift
« on: May 23, 2005, 10:18:03 am »
Hello,

Problem: Direct Rendering won\'t work with planeshift, so it runs slowly.
Distribution: Fedora Core 3 (kernel: kernel-2.6.11-1.27_FC3)
X server version: xorg-x11 6.8.2-1.FC3.13
glibc: 2.3.5-0.fc3.1
Graphics card: S3 Unichrome (unsupported in FC3, followed instructions from http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=26963&group_id=102048 to install.)

strace output:
http://www.rafb.net/paste/results/CiFZ7i98.html

Output in terminal:

Indirect rendering may indicate a flawed OpenGL setup if you run on a local
  X server.

With other games such as Neverwinter Nights, direct rendering works and the game runs smoothly.

Thank you.

Hi,

I have the same Problem.I can`t play PS too.If i want to start the psclient or the updater, i get the  message:

The problem in your case is Direct Rendering is not working. Running glxinfo will confirm this in one of the first couple lines.

The reason for this is simple, the solution not always so. The problem is that ATI cards (yours included) use a slightly different implementation of opengl if memory serves. ATI is fairly protective of this brandspecific implementation and as such open source support for it, as is so often the case with this sort of thing, has been difficult at best. However there is hope, ATI has their own set of linux drivers, not open source but precompiled. The hard part is integrating them in your kernel. This involves you patching the kernel to allow it to use this proriatary driver. Going into this whole process and the method how would take us too far on this board. Suffice it to say you will get a lot further by searching google on the subject. The driver in question is often referred to as the fglx driver (fire-glx). Maybe a good place to start would be here :

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=32300

I know its a fedora forum but the general idea should be the same. Maybe there are more specific Suse discussions on there matter if you google for that.

As you can see this process is continually changing as ATI releases new versions anyway which is another reason to look it up in forums specifically geared towards this kind of problem.

Good luck

I had no problem to play PS with the older version (3.007) + updates.
All 3D Games are running excellent on my system but the new PS client doesn`t start.I think the reason is, that the new Linux client is a \"Test Release\" at the moment.

Hello,

Same problem here !
Just installing 3.010 and direct rendering does not work !
(Mandrake 10.1)

glxinfo give :

name of display: :0.0
display: :0  screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
server glx version string: 1.3
server glx extensions:
    GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating, GLX_SGIX_fbconfig,
    GLX_SGIX_pbuffer, GLX_SGI_video_sync, GLX_SGI_swap_control
client glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
client glx version string: 1.3
client glx extensions:
    GLX_ARB_get_proc_address, GLX_ARB_multisample, GLX_EXT_visual_info,
    GLX_EXT_visual_rating, GLX_EXT_import_context, GLX_SGI_video_sync,
    GLX_NV_swap_group, GLX_SGIX_fbconfig, GLX_SGIX_pbuffer,
    GLX_SGI_swap_control, GLX_NV_float_buffer
GLX extensions:
    GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating, GLX_SGIX_fbconfig,
    GLX_SGIX_pbuffer, GLX_SGI_video_sync, GLX_SGI_swap_control,

OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce4 MX 440/AGP/SSE/3DNOW!
OpenGL version string: 1.5.1 NVIDIA 61.11
....

And was perfectly working with CB 3.009.

Bests regards.

Well, it is the issue in CS, it is being worked on by CS developer, we have to be patient. Anyway I have increased performance a little by using default openGL libs that comes with X instead these that comes with Nvidia driver.

Well, thank for the reply.
You are right, I\'ve just play some minute in full screen, without direct rendering, and I am impressed because it\'s look faster than 3.009 with direct rendering !!? The problem is that I can\'t go to Jaroda because there are no texture floor in the path !!! (I remember that I had the same problem in 3.009 when I loosed direct rendering for an other reason).
Ok, I will be patient, I am so happy to have this new client working ;-)
My first experience finished with a crash in the arena.

Thank you for your help.

Don\'t know for the other distro, but for mandriva, just try to use the genuine NVidia driver, on the NVidia site (just do a telinit 3, then run the file with a \".run\" extension being root).

This solved my problem : no indirect rendering anymore ! :D

But I still wonder why... I\'ll investigate to try to find the difference between the mandriva package and the NVidia driver.

Just a quick note, I would like to confirm that my issue is with direct rendering.

I get a race condition that either hangs or crashes during loading of the first area (plaza??) with several errors such as:

ProcessLighting
:
Sector \'hydlaa_jayose\' for ambient light was not found in lighting setup 0.

and

crystalspace.engine.notify:
Lightmaps are not up to date (no \'lm_precalc_info\' found in cache).
  Recalculation of lightmaps forced.
  Initializing lighting (939 meshes).
  Shining lights (44 lights).

while I\'m happy to post full verbosity.....theres a lot of it
can i please get a \'Nvidia\' if this issue seems to be the same CS/direct rendering fault?

No, I don\'t want to take the risk to break my system while reinstalling NVIDIA drivers, only because one program didn\'t know how to detect correctly my graphic system configuration. That\'s clear that the problem come from the default graphic installation coming with my Linux distribution. !!!

In my PC, with my NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440, I have a tuner TV Card Pinacle PCTV Rave. Should it be possible that this video card cause trouble while runing psclient and make it using indirect rendering mode ?

It is ok Akka, if you don\'t want to mess with your graphics drivers. Anyway, you
are saying that the game when at full screen works and in windowed mode not?
Can anyone with that problem check it as well? Maybe we will have at least
some workaround.

The issue that psclient is crashing randomly on sector changes is known issue
and, as far as I know, is being worked on.

Thank you for the reply.
No, psclient work ok in full screen AND in a window mode.
The bigest problem I have is that when I want to go on the path to Ojaveda, I have no texture on the ground ! I see a blue sky everywhere with three on invisible mountains.
I am playing on MandrakeLinux 10.1 official edition with NVIDIA drivers pre-installed. And I think that this \"pre-installation\" from Mandrake (Mandriva :) ) is not well detected by psclient.
An other point is the (relatively) slow mouse, but I can live with that, it is linked to the problem of indirect rendering.

I also got the message that psclient is using indirect rendering.

I am using xorg 6.8.2 with a Matrox G400 card.

And I was not able to get more than 16 fps with fullscreen glxgears although the output of glxinfo looked fine.

To fix the problem I tried to remove Mesa library so that glxgears links directly with xorg libraries but it did not help.

But I noticed that the X server says there is an error loading the dri module. In the Xorg.0.log it said that dri could not be loaded because it is once-only module.
I commented it out in xorg.conf and now I get direct rendering because the module is autoloaded somehow. Weird.

The mouse performance seems somewhat better when I set
Video.SystemMouseCursor = no
in psclient.cfg

Edit: Now that I updated to the latest Planeshift I consistently get game displayed with almost no textures. The missing textures are probably caused by buggy x.org driver for Matrox cards. It appears nobody is working on the driver anymore, there are several bugs reported against it without any response from developers.

These issues, unless are your system configuration relates, should be solved by the update of Linux installer.
