Chapter IV: Conversion
-Prologue-

Changing.

Indeed there was much changing.  The beggar lay in the dark, gloomy alley, just waking up.  The beggar?  Yes, the beggar.

The fellow removed his hood from his head, coughing.  And who was this beggar?  Why, the dwarf of course!

Ah, yes, the dwarf.  The same dwarf from the happenings just days before.  Uloim Oakenshade, as he called himself.  And so this dwarf was now known as more of a beggar than anything else.  Truely a beggar, or was it nothing but a disguise?

A good question indeed.

Part I: Operation

Scratching, scraping.  Cutting, breaking.

A man-made (well, dwarf-made, actually) knife scraped a long, thick stick, smoothing the thing out.  The object now formed into a long non-hollow pipe shape.  The knive scraped over all edges of the thing until it was a long, smooth cylinder.

The dwarf examined his work, and blew some wood shavings off of the piece.  He then took a long, narrow shard of glass from his bag, and the dwarf began to hollow out the inside of the object.  This was going to take some time...

Looking around his surroundings, Uloim (yes, Uloim Oakenshade) closely examined everything - the trees, the tall grass, the circular mushroom patches.  And as he did this, the dwarf continued the same motion, screwing the glass shard into the wooden cylinder.

\"Ghhe!\" escaped the lips of the dwarf, who was now looking at the drop of blood hanging weakly from his own large finger.  An idea struck his mind, and he stroked his finger against the long stick, creating various symbols with his blood.  Finally, the item was hollow in one half of the entire project!  And what was this project?  If one watches and pays attention, one will know soon enough.

And so the dwarf carefully began to hollow out the other side of the stick, looking around at his surroundings again.  The old home of the Glyph salesman was nearby, only around a corner.  Uloim could smell something, perhaps a new brew that was being made by the Glyphmaker.

Aha!  The item was completely hollow!  The dwarf smoothed the insides out, and looked through the thing with one eye.  He smiled, for the hardest part was done.

So, the dwarf made X type marks in certain places along one side of the item.  Around the markings, Uloim shaved away at the stick, until he created a hole that connected to the hollow tube in the middle of the stick.  He did this in many different places, and was just about done.

Done with what?  Why, the flute of course.

Part II: True Happiness?

Applause.

The male Kran and the female Enkidukai clapped the rhythm to the catchy tune, as the dwarf bounced around wildly, attracting a few more townsfolk.  When the dwarf had stopped, the applause arose from the few townspeople.  Tria and other items were handed to the dwarf and dropped at his feet.  The dwarf bowed, his flute still in hand.

He smiled, for he was finally happy.

But why the sudden change?  What brought this dwarf to become a simple beggar, a street performer?  Uloim himself was unsure, so he looked back into the past...

----------
----------------

\"You should join us, the Beggars could use someone like you!\"
\"Oh, no!  I don\'t beg...\" Uloim spoke to the human infront of himself, Mulla Nasrudin.

He was no beggar!  A fighter he was, a strong dwarf.  But the past...  Some hidden power kept itself undiscovered inside the dwarf\'s veins.
....
The son of an assassin and thief, he was.  His own father tried to kill him, but why?  Perhaps his father didn\'t want Uloim to gain too much power, and realise his hidden strengths?

Indeed many questions were left unanswered.  So, the dwarf declined the request to join the Beggars Guild.

For now, that is.

----------
----------------

And then the dwarf remembered the recent events that had happened (Please, see Chapters I-III) just days before.  Perhaps he pretended to be a beggar in order to hide from the assassins sent to kill himself.  Perhaps the dwarf wanted a taste of the streets, wondering if he would find answers to his many questions, or at least an explanation for why his father had become a.... businessman.

----------
----------------

All he knew now, was that he was happy.  And now that the dwarf was happy, he made his way to the tavern, searching for a certain human.

Who was this human?  Oh, one should know what is happening by now!

Part III: Yet Another Encounter

From rooftop to rooftop.  From the open streets to the empty alleys.  From the light into darkness, went the dwarf.

Darkness?  No, not that type of darkness!  The poor dwarf is not becoming evil, if that is what one is thinking!... Or is he?

Uloim had gathered various fabrics and hides, and had created a place for himself to sleep in a dark alley.  He would not stay only in this one alley, though.  The dwarf was a nomad, a wanderer.  He stayed in one area until he could no longer find people to listen and pay for his music, of course.

This dwarf knew the city so very well, the best meeting places, the best hiding places.  Indeed he had gained many enemies during his conversion to the dirty path of a beggar, but had also gained some friends along the way.

And so the dwarf secretly searched for a certain Ylian, one who would help Uloim harness his own strengths and talents.  But until then, the dwarf had to keep himself alive, obviously!

So, the dwarf headed to the tavern, indeed Kada El\'s.  Yes, Uloim was happy with this life, and would continue the same way until finding a reason to do otherwise.

The dwarf entered the tavern to be greeted by a dark figure.  The dark shape before Uloim bowed, and began to speak.

\"Finally, we\'ve met.\" spoke the unfamiliar, shadey voice.
\"Eh?  Mulla, is that yeh?\"
\"No, no.  My name is not Mulla.  You do not know me, Oakenshade, but I know quite a bit about you.\"

Ugh, not again!

:D I enjoy your return, to your original style that is.  Looks as if poor Uloim is in trouble again.

Epilogue

\"Oh?  And what d\'yeh know?\" Uloim spoke with much curiosity.
\"You\'ve killed three of my guildmates.  One was your own father, and the others were fellow Ylians.  Surely you know of whom I speak.\"
\"Well, one of th\'humans was an accident... an\' me father.  He was not slain by me own hand... but... Aye...\" Uloim replied quickly, grabbing for his newly bought weapons.  The figure came from the darkness, and was revealed to be yet another Ylian.  He smirked as he watched Uloim reach for the weapons.
\"Such a skilled dwarf you are, and you have no idea.  I can help you find and harness your powers if you let me.  If such a thing would happen, you would be even greater than your father dreamed, and that is saying a lot!  Perhaps you would join us afterwards, and bring us glory.\"
\"Tell meh, who is.... \'us\'?  An\' I \'ave many other questions for yeh as well.\" Uloim asked, leaning toward the human.
\"Well, come with me if you seek answers.  If you ask, I will answer as honestly as possible.\" the man said, a hand sticking out of his black cloak.  The cloak soared to the dwarf swiftly, and suddenly stopped, palm open.
Uloim blinked, and stood there for a moment.
\"I\'ve nothin\' t\'lose.  So be it.\" he said, and grabbed the hand.  The hands gripped eachother tightly, and shook up and down for a moment.  Then, nodding, the human walked outside the tavern, and the dwarf followed.
