Random(?) Segmentation Fault Crash
« on: May 25, 2005, 04:55:42 pm »
Hi

I have been experiencing segmentation faults with the 0.3.0010 PS client, which I never saw under the 0.3.0009 version. They\'ve all occurred in the sewers: 1. lying dead after a gobble killed me; 2. during the \'map\' change after entering the sewers behind the pub; 3. just walking down some steps with no other stuff going on.

On the last occasion, I\'ve done a GDB backtrace from the core dump:

(gdb) bt
#0  0x43d91421 in ov_read ()
   from /home/dave/planeshift/cal3d/libvorbisfile.so.3
#1  0x43d8ab35 in csOggSoundData::ReadStreamed(long&) ()
   from /home/dave/planeshift/CS/sndogg.so
#2  0x00000002 in ?? ()

I don\'t know if this is useful; I\'ll keep the core dump too if its of any benefit if you want me to examine something...

My system is PIV/1.5GHz, Mandrake 10.0, kernel 2.6.3, GLibC 2.3.4.

Cheers
Dave

I suggest checking what version you have of libogg and libvorbis. Possibly an old buggy version...

My libogg is 1.1 and libvorbis is 1.0.1. AFAIK, these are the latest... I certainly haven\'t changed them ever. All was well with previous PS.

Actually it has to be a CS bug. He is using library that comes with the client.

FYI, I have been running last couple of days with the sound off and so far I\'ve not had the crash...

I just had a crash which seems to be related to sound in CS, when going out of the Temple of Laanx:

the linux client in my experience is still very buggy.
The damned thing keeps crashing on me.
It doesn\'t even segfaults it just as i enter the tavern|temple|wherever, move to a diferently lighted area or switch region says goodbye and crashes to the desktop.
Had to turn off the sound completly to reduce the crashes, now it crashes every other day :O
The force is strong on this project tho so i have confidence it\'ll be much better in the future.  :)

i could solve this by updating to the latest nvidia driver,  if you own a nvidia card.

Im using the nvidia-glx v1.0.7174 package and it doesn\'t give me problems anywhere else :] (The latest are the v1.0-7664)
The thing is i think it has something to do with the sound since i turned it off it crashes less often. Oh and the openal sound doesn\'t work (and crashes as often as the software sound) despite the fact that i do have openal and openal-dev installed (to the latest stable version)
Like i said i believe it\'s the client that needs more work.  ;)  :baby:

So i just finished updating the nvidia driver (had nothing better to do - now running 1.0-7664).
Still crashes randomly both with sound enabled and disabled. It seems to happen mostly when i change areas or walk to a diferently lighted space, cant really put my finger on it, sometimes it just works sometimes it doesn\'t. Like i said doesn\'t seem to be a problem with my system ergo it should be a bug on the linux client.
I have encountered a gameplay issue not being able to gain 1pt in mining skill and am honestly bored of killing rats for most of the time i play, so i\'ll probably not be playing much until someone answers my thread on the newbie section or i get some more free time.
Hope the linux client devs can work theses problems out, im too lazy to post all the debug stuff :P

It might sound stupid but have you tried to disable sounds for avoiding the crashes?

Both CS and PS have sounds problems.

Aye you are right.
I was playing with the sound disabled at the time.
Upated the nvidia drivers but the problems continued until i rebooted (i dont reboot that often heh :P ) now it usually crashes with sound enabled and only in Hydlaa, i play without a glitch on every other region with software sound but when it loads the Plaza it crashes :P
