Hiking/Climbing Equipment
« on: May 26, 2005, 11:29:55 pm »
Now that I\'ve fallen off a cliff to my death... again... I have a few ideas:

1)  Hiking Boots - Same as leather boots, but with added traction.  They could allow the player to climb up/down steeper terrain than before, and slow slipping on very steep terrain.  (giving time to jump back to safe ground)  Cost should be only moderately greater than the regular boots.

2)  Rope - One could tie a length of rope to a tree or boulder and use it to repel off a cliff.  Or, you could tie party members together as a safety measure.  Cost should not be cheap.  (good rope was valuable before modern times)

3)  Climbing Harness and Grappling Hook -  This could be equipped to the belt slot, and would give the player the ability to get up to rather out-of-the-way places.  Obviously, this would require its own skill, and should be quite hard to learn.

4)  Trail Mix - Cheap snack food that once eaten temporarily lowers fatigue caused by jogging.  Would allow long trips with fewer stops.

5)  Faster Walking/Running-  Ok, not actually equipment, but needed.  Characters walk and run unrealistically slow.  Granted, we don\'t want people zipping all over the place, but you should be able to walk around at a much faster pace.  (the monsters are too slow too...)  Theoretically you can improve your stats to fix this, but I don\'t think you should start out so pathetically slow.  Additionally, it would be nice to be able to sprint quickly away from enemies.  Running should be a much faster.  (and use up more stamina)

A few of the things above could be done rather easily (like the boots), but others require the implementation of the climbing skill.  The grappling hook would also be a tad problematic with the current frequency of getting stuck in walls...

Erm .. climbing is already a skill thought not one that is useful yet as far as I know.

1) Sounds like a good suggestion and not too hard to create.

2) and 3) though they are good ideas from a theory point of view I think they would be as good as impossible to implement in a realistic way. The only way I see this possible is to create rope-adding points on particular locations where they could be handy. So that every person who owned a rope or maybe even rope ladder could use this to climb down. Of course getting back up might be a problem since if you leave the rope there you stand the risk of it being stolen. So I think there should be ropes one could climb with the right skill but they should be in set locations and cannot be removed.

4) Since there are food items/potions to recover health and mana I don\'t see why there aren\'t going to be any to recover stamina.

5) I agree that running looks more like walking fast at the moment so maybe one extra movement speed that is faster but also drains more stamina wouldn\'t be bad. Then you \'d have walking, speedwalking (for hiking) and running (for escaping from foes) Also right now the pace of every character is the same, undependent of their agility stat but I \'m sure that will change.
Also monsters should be able to run just like playable characters. An ulbernaut or clacker would of course still be rather slow but a rat or devourer should be pretty quick to catch up with you.

Yeah, the climbing skill is currently on the long list of skills that don\'t work yet.

The rope idea would be admittedly hard to implement, but not impossible.  The \"rope-adding points\" would just be trees, big rocks, posts, etc.  It theoretically wouldn\'t be too hard to just make these objects rope points by default.  So, anywhere in the world one of these objects is placed, you could latch on to it.

What I\'m hoping for in the short term is some hiking boots.  These \"you fell down and died\" messages are getting irritating...

Yes, the speed boost is something I\'d like to see, as well, as I have stated on other threads, too. However, the walking and runnign speeds are not excessively low, they only are percieved to be in 3d person view. In first person view, they are AFAICS realistic.

As for the steep hills... while it is realistic to slip and badly injure yourself on these slopes, it is not really realistic to die that quickly, especially considering the other ways of dying - being beaten to death using hard metal things or claws. However, it is known that fall damage is rather extreme ATM, so that\'ll be corrected eventually, I think.

number 2 and 3 wouldnt be as hard to implement NOW as if it were later

cause atm the world is still rather small (compared to what it WILL be) so implementing rope tying points (even before climbing is completed) would still help them alot IF they were to do it

personaly i think they should take some kind of stake and allow someone to hammer it into the ground (rope will be tied to it) and allowed to go off a cliff (there should be a set point of where it\'s hammered in), it could be used by going to a cliff (or being so close to it) and then try to use the stake, if your close enough he\'ll turn around and go so far away from the cliff, hammer the stake, and u know the rest.

now that in theory sounds good, but we\'ll have to see what they do (personaly my idea might be better, but with different types of stakes to improve how much weight can be put on it before it drops you)

NOTE:: we need a run skill to increase our running speed :D (otherwhys boots that increase would be cool)
