How can this game be free?
« on: May 29, 2005, 06:32:18 pm »
I haven\'t finished downloading yet (IT takes long even with Optimum Online) but I was wondering, how can this be free?  If the screenshots look as good as they do in the game, the world can\'t be very big.  Someone please tell me that\'s not true.

I want to clarify something  first off. the reason the game is free is because it is open source, this means that anyone who is serious enough about the game can contribute to its creation, therefore it is not a private company. the server space is dontated also i beleive (i could be wrong). It is built with an opensource graphics engine as well. for this reason the game is entirely free.

however about the world, at the moment the world is decent sized, but big enough for the moment. However the game is still in pre-alpha stage so it will be growing greatly as time progresses.

the world that is built now though is wonderfully useful, detailed and beautiful, so it is pleanty enough to keep you interested.

and finally please read the forums, you probably could have answered your own question. they are here to read as well as posted upon

Actually, Open Source != Free. You can sell it if you want, but THEN you have to give the source out.

And Atomic Blue is the company that owns PlaneShift, it\'s just that it\'s board of directors are the founders of PlaneShift and they believe strongly in free online gaming.

The world is quite big and we are continuesly developing new areas or improving old ones.

The servers are donated too, correct

It\'s like Mandriva, Fedora (the list could go on!) Linux, free to download and use because:
A)People feel strongly about Open Source software becoming \'the norm\' and want to share their programming talents.
B)Server space is donated
C)The parent companies make money elsewhere.

Have fun on PS :)
