Graig's art thread.
« on: June 02, 2005, 04:12:34 am »
hi i just wanted to share some stuff.  I have been drawing alot more lately since i ditched windows and went all linux. i have less games so i draw more.  Which is good. Because its either use it or loose it. and i would rather get better than worse. and im bored of the games i had anyways. so i will do drawings for different concepts or whatever. if anyone has any ideas bring them up and ill see if i can get some sketches.

Here is a minotaur that i have been working on and off.

Nice. I think the overall frame/build (stature, proportions, etc.) is very good. The only thing I can comment on is that the hair around the neck looks a bit weird (too solid, maybe?). Otherwise, very nice sketch. Clear, detailed, nice. :)

P.S. You may want to add more muscle/hair detail, but as this seems to be a preliminary sort of sketch, I suppose that comes later.

its pretty good, but the thumb on the left (from our perspective) is a bit unnatural. it should actually rest kind of between the index and middle finger.

thanks for the input, heres another one i started a couple days ago. this one still needs alot of work.

edit, now that i think of it, i think im going to move the elf guy\'s arm out and add a shield and change the spear to a sword.

Wow, this one is quite good.  The right hand needs to be longer (there is no room for a palm in there) but the pose is excellent.  If I were you I would start doing concept drawings of different types of armor or characters.  If you do more monsters try to use some references and put them in several interesting poses.  Nice work.

heres an update of this one.  im gonna keep drawing on this.  once i draw some more on it. im going to reupload this file.

BTW if anyone is interested in how i start on these.  i start with a gesture that takes about 5 to 10 minutes. and then i start a new layer in the gimp. And start adding details.  if you are really interested in improving your drawing. then getting better at gesturing is essential i think.  heres a picture of how this drawing started out. But anyways, i start with the gesture layer. i go back to it occasionally, when i need to plan something out.  after that i go back to a detail layer.  eventually when i feel good enuf about the detail layer, i turn off the gesture layer, or turn its opacity down.

wow very nice.
hmmm good call on changing the second one to  sword/shield. pose looks awkward to me for a spear... so anyway, good descision :D

The right hand looks like it\'s stretched, and the angle of the sword doesn\'t match the angle of the hand.  The blade needs to be rotated up (to match the rotation of the hand) and brought down so the warrior is gripping it with his whole hand (palm & fingers) rather than just his fingers.

Edit: Kinda like this, only I rotated the sword probably a tiny bit too much (the line of the knuckles should be parallel with the line of the sword).  You should probably make it look better than mine also ;) (I drew it with a mouse).

well, if you have ever closely watched someone swing a stick, or a sword. they often do what my hand is doing.  especially if its going to be a side swing.  he is about to pull those pinkies down to get a little more whacking action with the sword.   i diddnt think it looked akward or anything.  mabey im wrong.

well... i dont know ive never actually swung a sword before (woe is me ;( ) but i can see where both of you are coming from... maybe if the sword is really really light, the elf could hold it losely like that, but if it is heavier (like i imagine most swords would be) then i would think he would have to grip it tighter to keep it from flying out of his hand
on the other hand, it seems like alot of times in movies when there is like a samurai he seems to hold it like that every once in a while, but seriously, how reliable are movies?
i think i would go with gripping it tighter like arcane said
