Worth the wait?
« on: June 09, 2005, 03:01:07 am »
Hello, I have a few questions about PSCB. Since i have a dial up connestion, downloading this game is takeing FOREVER!!! since i cannot download straight through the night cause my internet connection would automaticaly shut itself down, i have downloaded a manager that can resume it when it stops. it is my third day of downloading and i am at about 50% done.... and i want to know if this game is worth the wait! These are my questions:

1: Does PS have a friendly community?
2: Does PS Play like a classic MMO (Wow, ect..)
3: Does PS have any similarities to the following MMO\'s:
A:runescape
B:Guild Wars
C:WoW
4: Are the screenshots DIRECTLY out of gameplay? (once i downloaded a rather large game, thinking it had good graphics by seeing screenshots, and they ended up sucking!)
5:Around What is the community size for PS?
6:Does it have many quests?
7:Does it have many skills to raise?
8:How does combat work?
9:What types of item varities are there?
10:Does PS have much of a storyline?
11:Is it needed to download any large patches in the future?

Thank you for your time! if i think of any more usefull questions, i will edit the post.

mrrr.... lots of questions....
1) If you look enough, there are many RP\'ers buried in the N00BS!1111. try the tavern or the temple.
2) Planeshift cannot compare to WoW or Everquest because it is an alpha of a beta. there is crafting, combat , mining and some other fun stuff though
3) Ps is WAY better than runescpe, which has weak community and no rp\'ing. never played Guild wars, and as i told you above, we are alpha beta
4)The screenshots are DIRECTLY from gameplay, unaltered or edited in any way.
5)there is about 15000 members, but many are inactive. expect anywhere from 50 to 100 (and sometimes more) people at once
6) the quests are disabled due to bugs, but they will be back soon!
7) You can train in Sword, Axe, Melee, Mining, Blacksmith, Light armor, all 6 magic ways, all 6 physical and mental stats (more are coming!)
8 ) The combat system is new. you click the enemy and its all on skills.. in SB it will be better. you can do hit and runs though against stronger enemys.
9) Mugs, Sacks, Various foods, Various weapond, leater armor, shields, potions and magic glyphs
10) read players guide when its done loading. read the backround story
11) you have to update it frequently for updates. comes with an updater

Sweet, this game sounds pretty cool. I hate asking questions like this, but define \"roleplaying\" (as ive seen it in plenty of other posts?)

Another question:

Does PS even RUN SMOOTHLY on a dial up connection (minimum lag, speedy load times, etc.)?

Planeshift is a great game if you just came from runescape.  However, keep in mind that it is still in beta so it won\'t be done for a while.  It\'s still preety good now though! WAY BETTER THAN RUNESCAPE!!!

.... it would be nice if you had answerd my question. i USED to play runescape and i have currently been playing guild wars and some random, small MMO\'s. Ive played a very small amount of WoW. I was wondering if PS compared to any of these games.

Hello there, and welcome to the forums!

Roleplaying? I\'d say more of the lines as acting as your character, rather than yourself...
It\'s like telling a story, for how I roleplay...

For a first step, I\'d recommend thinking of your character\'s background, what his or her\'s reaction would be to certain things...
Then, working from that, shape their attitude, and how they would be seen to others.

That, and have fun! ^^
Crazy am I. Not responsable for crazyness that ensues.

Welcome to PlaneShift. :)

Roleplaying is \'living\' your character\'s personality when you play the game. You speak as your character would speak; you know only things that your character in the world of Yliakum would know. There is no such thing as skateboards or London or horses or Van Gogh in Yliakum. There are also no dragons. The world inside Planeshift is very unique, so reading the Settings/History sections of the Player\'s Guide is a must for good roleplaying.

RP (RolePlay) is not hard once you get the hang of it. And it\'s not as much of a chore as it sounds; it makes you feel truely part of the world, and the bonds you make with other players are ones forged through adventures and danger and excitement! A good RPer gains respect in the community for being thoughtful, imaginative and willing to interact with others.

To answer your question about Dialup, you shouldn\'t experience too much lag. Most stuttering comes from graphical performance issues, so you\'d better have plenty of RAM! (Section 1.1 of the Player\'s Guide tells you system requirements).

If you have technical issues during install, configuration, updating or gameplay, chances are it is already a known issue. No need to make a new thread immediately about it; use the button and enter some relevant words to see if you can find a solution to your problem. Incase the search doesn\'t work well, just skim over the first couple of pages of the technical/bugs forums, and if you still can\'t find what you need, feel free to post a thread in the appropriate area asking politely to help (don\'t forget to mention your searching endeavors or you may get snapped at!). ;)

So, with that out of the way, enjoy your stay, and have fun. :)

Actually, it\'s not an alpha on a beta, it\'s a beta on an alpha :)

About the 56kbit issue, the client uses about 0.1KB/s (and 56k can do 7KB/s)

I haven\'t played Runescape or WoW, though I have played GW enough to know that it is hardly comparable.

Along with what I heard about the games I haven\'t played and what I know about GW the major difference between those games and PS is that this game actually has a community. Other games seem to lack all forms of roleplaying and in character acting. All the community does there is buy and sell items to get stronger or richer.

This is the first game I \'ve seen with such a great RPing community so if that is what you are looking for you definitely want to continue the download. If you are looking for a complete game with tons of skills, weapons, items, ... you might want to wait a bit though since PS isn\'t at that stage yet. It has great promise for the future and a lot of things are planned but they only get added slowly.

My go at your questions:

1: Does PS have a friendly community?

In principle, yes. Obviously, there are always some bad apples, though. Also, friendliness depends on how you feel about certain essential things. If you can accept the rules that are set out to allow an enjoyable environment, and also adhere to the netiquette, then little problems should arise.

2: Does PS Play like a classic MMO (Wow, ect..)

Most definitely not. You are quite correct in leaving the \"RPG\" out of the others, because they are not about roleplay at all. PS, however, is only about roleplaying. Stats and levelling are secondary in PS, there only to back up your roleplay by giving your char the appropriate abilities, and to prevent the problems that free RP brings with in any large, essentially uncontrollable, community.

3: Does PS have any similarities to the following MMO\'s:
A:runescape
B:Guild Wars
C:WoW

I think the similarities are that you have a virtual world, a char with certain looks and skills, quests, other players, and items. It is not about getting better in stats (essentially playing past everyone else and only use the other players to assess your own rank by means of levels and / or wealth), but about playing a believable character (i.e., playing with the others, shaping a living world that is immersive).

4: Are the screenshots DIRECTLY out of gameplay? (once i downloaded a rather large game, thinking it had good graphics by seeing screenshots, and they ended up sucking!)

Yes. All screenshots are from ingame. Even with low resolutions, PS still looks surprisingly well.

5:Around What is the community size for PS?

Expect about 60 players online. Expect to have ~30 of these to be passers-by, leaving ~ 30 dedicated players online around the clock. I estimate the dedicated playerbase to be ~ 150 players in total. Add to this some 30 people who are mainly present on the forums or IRC channels.

6:Does it have many quests?

There are very few, because PS is very very early development, lacking a lot of polish, features and content. Also, as has been mentioned, quests are disabled ATM but will be back eventually.

7:Does it have many skills to raise?

Yes, but most are non functional ATM, because they are not implemented yet.

8:How does combat work?

Combat with monsters ios easy: target them, select an attack stance, and you are fighting. PvP is limited to duels, on which both sides have to agree beforehand. This is due to the immense problems that any sort of open PvP system brings with it.

9:What types of item varities are there?

Due to PS\'s early development state, there are only a few items, maybe 50 in total. Many more are to come, but they need to be made first.

10:Does PS have much of a storyline?

It does have a detailed background and history (though it is not as detailed as would be nice... yet). There will most likely be a continuing story, too, but since the game itself isn\'t really done yet, this isn\'t going to show in the near future.

11:Is it needed to download any large patches in the future?

Absolutely. Patches are frequent and occasionally quite large. The latest patch was some days ago, and about 5 MB (3+3 in quick succession). There was an 80MB update some weeks ago, and I expect another big one anytime.

Edit: disabled smileys.

ps does not compare at all with guild wars or wow for now concerning gamplay (i haven\'t played those two, but i\'m just assuming based on what i\'ve heard and seen on websites) but even at this stage planeshift blows \"shakes in fear\" the \"r\" game out of the water.
planeshift also probably kills just about any other game from an rp standpoint... but right now there is not much to do as a new player other than rp... the quests are disabled and you start with no weapons or money or anything, so it is really hard to start off, and if you die there\'s about an 85% chance that the ground will not show up in the death realm and you will never make it out (atleast that\'s what happned to me)
however, i expect most of these bugs to be resolved soon, and there\'s plenty of land to explore for now (as long as you don\'t die)

about dial up, i\'m not sure how connection speed affects the game, but you better make sure you have a freaking awesome video card... i have a top of the line comp with dsl and tons of ram, but my video card sucks big time, so my character runs like this:

(ooo... paint :D )
his legs dont move... he just sort of teleports a few feet at a time... very... slowly...
