Creating Characters in the new version of PS
« on: June 21, 2005, 08:57:16 am »
Hello to everyone.

Thought I\'d introduce myself as a new planeshift player. I have been playing a couple of days now, and thought I\'d raise an issue. The players guide talks about paths and so on in the create character section. Unless I totally missed it in my haste to get in-game it seems like the web-based guide is out of date and even mis-leading.

I realise there are more important things the Devs have to do than take the time to update the players guide, but a thread on the forums could be a helpful guide to the creation process. Remember that many people will check the forums before getting in-game during the download and so on.

My specific question concerns the points used during creation, I created my character trying to conserve points, as I got the impression I would be able to alocate the points later. It seems in hind-sight that I should have spent them all as this is the basis of my starting stats and skills. Since we only get 4 slots and we cant delete a character from a slot it is a really important starting point, doubly so as it is so hard to raise a skill by a point or two in the early stages of the game.

Could anyone (who knows the details) do a quick guide to character creation on the forum?

/me shuts up now and gets off the soapbox

Edit can anyone suggest how the settings work on the camera, as my view in \'follow\' seems to be too far away, my character is too small unless i am in a tight space. The free movement setting is a move better view, I just can\'t walk in the right dirrection!

Welcome to planeshift Shadowson!
About the camera: you can zoom while hollding shift by dragging your mouse. TAB enables mouslook and M switches between the camera modes.

About the character creation:
There is manual you can find here, it also has a section about char creation. This manual doesn\'t cover everything though. An since I am in a good mood, I made you a guide which tries to fill in the gaps. It came out to be longer than I expected though. ;)
------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are two ways to create a character. You can select a path or you can go through the standard char creation procedure. In both cases you have to select a name, race, gender and you have to choose between a few different models of the chosen race (only applies for male Ynnwns so far).

If you quickly want to have a functioning character, you can chose one of the pre-defined paths by clicking the word \"path\" (not the word \"next\"!) Then you\'ll be able to choose between six pre-created paths. Click \"upload\" afterwards and you are done. Note that the current paths are mainly focused on different kinds of fighters. But even if you\'re not planning to be a fighter they will do fine.

If you want to give your character more \'background\', you can choose for the standard char creation method. This way you have to select the historical experiences which have formed your char to what it is when you start the game. You never see the exactly which skill or stat each option alters, but if you select things like \"you traveled with a circus\" you can expect to turn out to be more agile while \"you played war as a child\" gives you some fighting skills. To be sure all characters end up about equally developped, the system uses Character Points. You start out with 150 character points which you can spend on the different \'experiences\'. Always try to spend all your Character points (CP), or you\'ll end up with a disadvantage to other people.

After clicking \"next\" you\'ll get to the Birth screen. Here you can select a birth date and the amount of siblings you had in your family. Although these options don\'t cost CPs, they do have an influence on how your character will be. Read the descriptions of the months to see in what suits you the best, or chose \"randomize\".

After clicking \"next\" you\'ll get to the Parents screen. Here you can select the jobs your parents used to have. They also influence you (your char), as you can be expected to have learned from them. Don\'t spend all your CPs here though, as you have to select more things later on. If you run out of CPs at a moment, you can always return to the previous screens to chance to \'cheaper\' options.
You also can chose if your parents were normal, famous or exceptional in their professions. If you chose Famous or Exceptional, you\'ll pay more CPs, but you also get more benefits. Below you can select a religion, but that has no use yet.

After clicking \"next\" you\'ll get to the childhood screen. Here you can select your Birth event, Child activity and the type of house you lived in. It might be hard to guess how they influence your character, so simply chose what you like. The more expensive ones will always give more advantages though. Some options might cost a negative amount of CP, which simply means that it gives you a disadvantage or that the disadvantages out weight the advantages it gives.

After clicking \"next\" you?ll get to the Life events screen. This is the last screen where you can spend CPs. So try to spend all what you have safed here, as remaining CPs are simply lost. There are also quite some negative events, which give you extra CP. Be sure to read the whole descriptions before choosing something, as a lot of events have positive as well as negative aspects.

After clicking \"next\" youll get to the final screen. Here you can see the results of your choices. If you don?t like what you?ve got, you can always go back to change a few things. But don\'t be too picky, as you can always train the skills and stats in game. When you are finished click \"Upload\" to start the game.

Don\'t over estimate the influences of the char creation screen though, the race you chose most often influences your stats far more. Here you can see the basic stats of the races. Also try to avoid stereotyping your char too much. If you play an enkidukai you probably want to be very agile. But that?s not per se a reason to choose all the options that boost your agility, as all the enkidukais are already very agile by default, and you might need some of the other stats and skills as well. The same goes for Strength and Krans, Intelligence and Xachas, Charisma and Diabolis, etc. Last advice: make sure your Endurence is not too low, or accept that minor wounds might seriously harm you and you have to rest after running for two minutes (, which makes traveling very time consuming)

Thanks for the tips Hitancrias,

I had found the guide you refered to, but your explaination helped me understand what the points system was about.

I think I will be putting it into practice and creating a new character to see what differences it can make, and become more proficient with the creation system. Then I will decide if I will stick with the original or start again with the new one. Although I have a few hours of play time with my Dwarf, I made a few errors experimenting with the training system as well as at creation when I did not spend all the points. Even as I type this, I am thinking that I will probably stick with the original, as PS is not really about maxing out a character; so a few points lost along the way does not matter.

Finally I did manage to get my camera view sorted out as you suggest by dragging the mouse, I had read about it elsewhere by could not get it to work. When you mentioned it I stuck at it for a few more drags of the mouse and it worked perfectly. I also figured out why it was so far away to start with, I spend quite a bit of time playing with my two (and a half) year old son sat on my lap, he frequently \'helps\' with the keys or mouse and must have held the key without me noticing.....

(edit- excuse the off topic ramblings of a proud father, feel free to skip it)

Regarding my son, he likes MMORPG and has his own character on \'Conquor\' where game play is much more a simple case of
step a) point at mob and click till mob dies,
step b) point at loot on the floor and click it
step c)  repeat steps a and b.

He cant play PS as there is much more required from the player, but he loves the 3D world and can steer the character around effectivly. He hates it when I \'camp\' a spawn point and is definatly an explorer, as soon as he can read and write/type he will be a RP\'er too.

I am not sure how educationally sound it is with a toddler playing/watching video games, but I say start \'em young!
It is no worse than TV and probably better than TV as you are not a passive observer, much more a participant in the events. If I offend anyones sense of what\'s \'right\' for a toddler then my defense is that he also loves the \'teletubbies\' website at bbc.co.uk which is definatly educational, and he can boot up, log on and select it from the favorites, not to mention select the correct games and dialogue boxes.

Sorry if I am rambling, but I am at work with nothing to do for an hour.....

I\'m glad you found it helpfull. And you are absolutely right that PS is not mainly about maxing out a character. Enjoy the game, it was funny to read that you son likes it too!

*wonders what PS would look like by the time he\'s old enough to play it.*
