General System Ideas

Hello:

This is my first post, and I want to explain some (I think) good improvement to the General System:

1st: When you update the program, when a file is downloaded, it could be added to a zip first and then to the program itself. The zip file could be named \"date.zip\" and be useful if you must reinstall the program; then, you don\'t need to download them again.

2nd: It could be (too) a great improvement if the GUI text were translated at runtime. This could be done using the GNU gettext lib. (http://www.gnu.org/software/gettext). An example of this lib, you can try with Blender, The GIMP and another programs ported to win32 and macos (originally from Linux).

We are doing that since a few years back, translating that is. Using our own system

Thanks Androgos for your fast response!.

I refered to the following thing when talking about the zip file:

[The new thing it could do in bracket]
- Run updater.
- Download updated files
  - (Zipped them into one file)
  - Update system files

I suggested adding a new step in the process:
zipping (or taring) the files before updating the system ones. This will consume the same bandwith (at first) but, the final user will not need to re-download that files (saving bandwidth).

(Reffered to translation GUI) We are doing that since a few years back, translating that is. Using our own system

I suggested GNU gettext because all translatable strings are hosted in \"one\" file and that file is plain text.
That\'s all. I thought about this because I was looking the way to translate the program into spanish language.

if you edit the updater config, you can set whole zips to 1 and then you will always download a zip.  Are you asking to have it keep backups of the old zip before an update?

Re: text, the files are all stored mid- xml files, which can be confusing, but there are plans to simplify them with schemas. I\'d recommend translating easier things like the guide first, then the help window text.

I was not refering to that. I was refering to this:

- (Zipped them into one file $date$.zip)
- (Merge $date_old$ zip with new one)
- Update system files

(I\'ve added 2 steps to make it clear).
This will save the server to serve files that are \"the same\" that the hosted at that file).
You\'ll be able to \"burn\" that zip file and always have the latest version.

Ok, I\'ll begin to translate the doc... but where\'s the source?. I\'ve seen at the doc page that are compiled with docbook. Are the docs sources at the source planeshift pkg?.

Only one thing more: I translated the Updater screen and, then, I runned the Updater program. It downloaded the config file and deleted my translation. Is there any way that the program didn\'t that?.
(Note: The file downloaded was the same that the original one on which I made the translation).

Brillant idea, now go back in time a year or so and tell Androgos that he\'s about to impliment it The updater intelligently compares files in zips to ones on the server, and if you are missing a few small files it iwll download that, but it they are more then 50% of a file, it gets the zip instead. that is also configurable in the config. There are other options as well, but the only files that are not taken as perfectly as possible are lightmaps.

You can make files not be replaced by making them read-only, and the updater will skip them. So far, there is no way to tell the updater to ask you which to use.
