Will Planeshift work on the computer I want to buy?
« on: June 27, 2005, 02:35:34 pm »
The computer I want to get is a Mac Mini 1.42 GHz with 1 GB of RAM. Will Planeshift work well with this computer? I want to know before I save up for it.

Sorry, but it won\'t. The Mac Mini only has 32 mb of videomemory and that\'s not enough.

And Drey, some people like pc/windows, some pc/linux and some mac/mac os X. Let it be. It\'s their taste.

But personally I also recommend PC. Especially since Apple is going to build intel processors in their mac\'s, so in the future a mac will simply be a nice looking pc with a different OS on it. Or you install windows on a Mac ofcourse.

But.... the Mac Mini isn\'t meant for gaming anyway.

Sorry Thom, you\'re wrong, it will run it quite happily.

My computer is a 667 Ti Powerbook with a 32 mb ATI Rage and only 512 mb RAM (about the most obsolete they get these days) and it runs just fine. Yes, it\'s slightly choppy in Hydlaa Plaza but there are things to do to help it run (16 bit color, no music, adaptive distance)

Dallin, your mac mini will run planeshift much nicer than mine will and mine runs it. Don\'t listen to PC b$s*a%ds and windozers, they\'re wrong, simply wrong. Your mac mini could happily run WoW if it wanted to. Remember in raw processor speed, multiply the mac\'s by about 1.6 and that\'s what speed you need on a PC to match it. Essentially you would be buying a 2 ghz PC with a gig of ram and a 32 mb graphics card. That will run planeshift. My Mac runs, and Dallin, yours will be three times faster than mine.

However, remember that for the time being, when a new updated client comes out for the PC, there is usually a week or two before the mac one is completed. This is because dfryer is volunteering his time.

All told, buy a mac, though if possible, buy a G5, not a mac mini.

Thanks, provisionist1, for the encoragement. Little Windoze liers...

I took the liberty of looking at the system requirements myself, and it will work. :P So there, Windows.

(Actually, technically, a computer running Windows XP and a 867 MHz processor will run Planeshift, but not smoothly, an 867 MHz Mac would zoom. :)

I\'m getting a Mac mini because that\'s what I can afford, believe me, I really want a G5, but it\'s just not what I can get.

Dallin, if you can afford it, buy yourself a PowerMac.
I have both Mac and Win, with planeshift installed. But I prefer to run it on my Mac (2x1,8 Ghz, 1,5GB RAM, Radeon 128 MB), because it runs much smoother and faster and are loading faster too. I get pretty high FPS 40-140 normally, music on without crashing. It\'s correct that we sometimes had to wait a little when they update the game, but thanks to Daniel Fryer and Chaos, everythings normally ends up working.

And remember. Most people choose Mac because they want a stable, productive system with minimal risk for virus, spyware etc.

Some guys where calling me a lier, why?? What did I do to you? That a 32 mb videocard is not going to run PS smoothly is simply TRUE. Don\'t let those mac fanboys tell you anything else. Ofcourse you can let it run smoothly by using 16 bit color, no music and adaptive distance, but that\'s ugly and I don\'t recommend it. Adaptive distance sometimes causes buildings to be only half visible and no music, well that\'s boring! Suit yourself and buy a mac mini if you want. I was only trying to HELP you! But if you start calling people like me LIERS than get the hell away from this forum.

You ARE a lier, Phoenix...
« Reply #7 on: June 28, 2005, 03:50:26 pm »
ThomPhoenix, I was calling you a lier because you said that on a Mac Mini, Planeshift wouldn\'t work at all. Oh, and the music off, 16 bit, etc. I have to do with a 867 MHz Pentium III with Windows XP, around 512 MB of RAM, and a GeForce 2 MX with 64 MB of VRAM. With a 1.42 GHz Macintosh processor, it\'ll work better (even though there is only 32 MB of video memory). And before trying to criticise Macs again, you\'ll never turn me away. I am a Macintosh freak!

I\'m using a windows laptop with 16Mb Video Ram and 768 Ram, XP2200+ and plays in 1024x768 (without sound) and everything is fine. I dont see why it shouldnt work on your Mini.
And why do you guys always start a mac/win war?

I work & play on my sony laptop, dream of having a gaming system from alienware and a utra light apple laptop for work ... Stop dreaming and go back to work...

Yes, it should work fine.  I\'ve got an aging geforce2 with only 32 MB of memory and, except for choppiness in the plaza, it runs really well.  Your gpu should be newer and therefore faster than mine, so it will defenitely suffice.

Okay then, I admit that I was wrong about the 32 mb. But you could\'ve simply said \"ThomPhoenix, you are wrong, it will work\" instead of \"don\'t listen to those windoze b#%^$es\" and \"he\'s lying\". You understand that? I was wrong, but I was trying to help, so don\'t scold at me. And I\'m not trying to convert you guys to pc or something, where did I say that mac sucks? I didn\'t! I wouldn\'t buy a mac myself, but if you guys want to, do it! I\'m not stopping you.

So to conclude this topic:
1 Don\'t call people \"windoze b@$*&es\" or \"liers\", that can have a bad effect on some people.
2 Apparently PS does work on 32 mb, I\'ll add that to my knowledge base :)
3 I\'m not anti-mac.

Sorry, the b@s&a%d$ was a bit over the top, and win-doze is just a joke in the mac community...hehehe. Didn\'t mean to hurt any feelings, it\'s just with there being only about 2% mac users around, we sometimes get a little militant about what we like and this causes PC users to become militant back.

Personally I think PCs and macs are about equal in what they can do, it\'s just macs are more expensive and do other things than PCs. For overall gaming a PC is better, but Macs do have a lot of games, including Planeshift... Yay!!!

Right, let\'s not continue the mac-PC war. It really is pointless and will result in Moogie deleting the thread. (c\'mon, you know it\'s true.)

Right, good luck to you Dallin in the new mac you will buy,

You\'re right, it\'s all just ones and zeroes in the end.

But linux is better ones and zeroes than Mac OR Windows.

Just kidding

Personally, I would suggest a Desktop. Its cheaper and usually has more grunt  :P I have a 2.6 ghz, 512RAM and 128mb Video card and sometimes even I get a really low Frame Rate :(
Maybe 32Mb is not enough ?(

Just my suggestion though, I’m sure you would no better then me in Macs then I do ;)
