\"Power Gamers\" care to express on that a little more...

An i think it is unfair to be stating what sort of a gamer is and is not aloud to play in planeshift.

Sorry but very un-cool an not nice :(

Sorry, but it\'s true. PlaneShift isn\'t for power gamers, never has been, and never will be. Why do you think we insist on having \'talk-to\' NPCs rather than \'choose your response from a list\'? Why do you think we make every effort to ensure people are unable to bot mining and fighting? Why is killing mobs not the main goal in PlaneShift?

Because Roleplaying is the main goal.

Powerlevelers will get very little fun out of PS: that is on purpose and by design.

Well I am what you would consider a \"Power Gamer\"
an yes I do race to lvl up... So this automatically means I cant enjoy the rest of what PS has to offer and that I shouldnt play ? !

I do on occasion enjoy a bit of RPlaying

I jst didnt like the \"are not wanted here\" it is totaly uncalled for and in no way the spirit of which RPGs should be portrayed :(

Wrong. That\'s exactly the spirit RPGs should have. Powerleveling does not belong in PlaneShift, no matter how much you may want it to be otherwise. Roleplay is the centerpoint - how high your stats are, is completely irrelevant. I can understand not roleplaying all the time, no matter how wrong that is in actuallity, but powerleveling is not what this game will be used for. That is final. This is the project of the devs, their hobby, their brainchild, and they set the rules and guidelines for appropriate in-game behavior. Powergaming lies outside of that set norm.

If you want to run around creating an \'uber\' character, feel free to \'race\' in another game that will be more sympathetic to your needs. You won\'t find any sympathetic ears here, however.

So for me to play the role of a \"strong character\" i.e. my character  thrives on strength an power... which is aloud by Levelling Up in the game.. But i choose to knuckle down with training (for whatever roleplaying reason, like my character is a war warrior that came from outside the village) So i am less sociable with the communtity... Yet this is not Playing a Role?!

I think everyone has missed the point, which is that this is an RPG an role playing is made up, If my character enjoys the hunting and becoming strong instead of doing more of the standing around and acting role, I am still role playing jst living out a different role.

And of course a world without individuality would seem to get a bit boring... Well for me at least ;)

if you were anti social in your rp way, and someone very polite came up to you as you bash in a teffies skull, you would still at least responf to them with a look a glint or say somethin, then yes, it IS roleplaying an ati social person

but what do most do? bash bash kill loot bash bash kill loot
ignore person talking bash bash kill loot steal kill loot sell loot train train train bash quicker kill loot

so on and so forth, that isnt roleplay, thats what we are pointing out.

Sounds like a two way street to me, also sounds win/win.

There are two kinds of play, rp and lvling, or both for that matter.
While rp is said to be the primary function of this MMORPG, increasing your stats is also huge, with talk of even more options becoming available.

Its all good though, PS is awesome, like any \'game\' if you don\'t like it you wont play, and if you dont socialise at least to some degree you will get bored.
This \'game\' has something for both the rp player and Powergamer.
IMO thats the reality.
Like Noxide said, without individuality...

Bash, Bash, Bash, Kill, Loot, Sell, sounds like work to me, sounds good, makes me strive, makes me interact more with other gamers, feels realistic to have to do this to survive.
Theres no free lunches, if this wasnt in the game, and it was mainly rp, i feel PS would not gather the crowds it has today and deserves.

Anyway thats only my opinion. Im just another noob. Loving PS

There is a difference between bashing In Character and doing it just to \"race\" against other gamers. If the choice is the latter, it must be changed. Every game needs some sort of conflicts for players to enjoy, but this one requires that the characters of the players do it in their stead. If you cannot excuse the bashing/looting/training with a roleplay reason, then it\'s time to shut down the game and give it some thoughts.

Im not racing against anyone, that is futile. But in reality, I have a strong work ethic, I like to persevere at tasks, get a sense of accomplishment. That is my point about the Bash, Kill, Loot scenario.
This is an important aspect of the game.
This is my first RP \'game\', so I am new to this, I really like the RP and am continually developing it.

\"The objective of the PlaneShift Team is to create a virtual fantasy world in which a player can start as a peasant in search of fame and become a hero.\"

Quote from Apple Mac Game Downloads.

Gonna have to do some \'work\' to find fame and become a hero.
Will probably interact at \'work\'.

If you believe being a hero means having an uber-stat character, you\'re badly mistaken. Heroes are made through RP interaction with others - you\'re not going to save the world by killing a Boss.

As it has been stated, if you want to get a sense of accomplishment that involve a gathering of stats and wealth, there are many other games that would suit your purposes better. Please do not \"pollute\" PlaneShift by bringing in such a mindset to Yliakum. It is a good place to learn roleplay and become more familiar with what it means - but bash/kill/loot without any RP reason is not going to be tolerated well.

I agree Karyuu, I certainly dont feel I am \'polluting\' the game, thats a bit harsh.

I think you miss my point about the B/K/L scenario. Bigger picture. np :)

Thanks.

Becoming strong won\'t make you famous. Becoming strong and then rp\'ing with it will. :) It\'s entirly possible to rp and raise your stats at the same time. When I play, I try to rp, do quests and other things while my stats increase as a result of it.

The game currently doesn\'t give too much support to rp\'ers though, something which I hope we can resolve in the coming months.

The quest system should help give the RPG\'ers more to do in the game. But even that is a reward system. Any reward system can and probably will be most \"efficiently\" used by PL\'ers. What seems to be missing from this game is any attempt to help people learn to Role Play in game. The Advisor system seems to have turned into a contest to see who can give away the most methods of PL\'ing your character the fastest way possible. Guilds seem to be a good method to get a group together to go out and PL your characters by fighting and looting NPC\'s that individuals can\'t handle.

The thing I remember about starting in AD&D back in the day was making a group of new friends who were not just interested in showing off their RPG skills, but genuinely enjoyed teaching me how to play. Once I had learned, it was just as much fun to show others how to play.

The atmosphere of \"it\'s a secret and we\'re not gonna tell you, so go away ya noob!\" instead of at least trying to RPG the learning process for newbies just encourages them to go off and PL all the \"secrets\" themselves. This actually encourages newbies to take the PL path instead of trying to figure out how to placate the RPG oldbies into tolerating them, IMHO.

Just what incentive to play PS in an RPG manner are you guys going to build into the system?

/me starts to contemplatively drink his beer and realizes that he\'s a dwarf! and just drinks his beer instead
I\'m the Dwarf in the shortpants. No the other Dwarf in the shortpants!

I have to agree on that one, when I mentioned that I can\'t role-play in a different thread, I was told to go find a different game and come back when I\'m ready to roleplay. Well, too bad, but I need to learn first, and playing Quake is not going to teach me, no matter how many times I get blasted to pieces.

It seems that people think that knowing how to role-play is something you are born with, and either you can or you can\'t. No way they are going to teach us. To be fair, some people did suggest to watch other people role-playing, but with the current \"too many n00bs in Hydlaa, let\'s hide our role-playing somewhere else\" mentality, the ones I watch only shows me how to roleplay an 8-year-old, which is something I am NOT interested in learning (basically it involves clicking \"duel\" on as many people as possible, and only using words that would be bleeped out on TV).

Roleplaying is kind of hard at first, I\'ll grant you that, but it can be made easier if you first of all write down a bit about your character. Always give your character some pros and cons as it makes you more interesting during roleplay.
Try put yourself in your characters shoes. If he had a tough time with some Kran in his/her youth, then keep that in mind when talking to Kran. Also, keep a pen and paper handy so when you talk to people and mention stuff about your youth or past, write if down and use it in further conversations to keep your characters history consistent.

In the end, you\'ll be able to hold a conversation with others in-character. I\'m always willing to listen to stories in the Tavern, so tell me and I can come over and have a chat. Story telling is one of the best ways to flesh out yourself and to learn about others.

Good to hear. So there\'s no need to make a big deal out of this thing. We\'re here mainly for testing purposes, and loss is part of it. If someone\'s disappointed about losing items or stats, they should participate in roleplay and form relationships with people that will never be affected by any wipe.
I would have to agree with this.  The game at this stage is a \"tech demo.\"  Anyone involved in the game at this point must understand that while they are playing a game, what they are actually doing is aiding in the development of said game by helping the developers to test and modify whatever parts of the code they need to.  What\'s more, this free game is being precluded by a free tech demo in which all are invited to participate.  I, for one, consider it a privilege to be a part of this process, when those involved could easily have made it more exclusive, or charged for it.  I don\'t think any one of us who are essentially squatting here has a right to complain about the way things are run.  If a wipe is necessary, so much the better; that means progress.  Ask anyone who works testing games for a company like Blizzard, SquareEnix, or Lionhead: testing a game is never as fun or as relaxing as actually playing one, and the game usually doesn\'t yet work the way most people would probably want it to.
