I\'m a new guy who just read this thread. I am not much into getting into a role in a game or pretending to do so. I like to play all aspects of a game. I like to explore and see the neat world that the developers have created. I also like to level up. THe stronger you are the more you can do. Is this game different. I also like the idea of not having to level it up to the sky. I think too much takes away from a game. I like doing what I can in a game whether it is having  job or leveling up my character. Of hat I have seen of hte world so far it is amazing. I like the forsts, the houses, and the cities. I have only been playing two day and I am amazed at what is in the game. Is this a game for me or do I also need to leave. I am 23, I do not like the idea of playing a role, but I do like to explore, bash, and talk to other nice people.  I like the people I met so far in this game. Being a noob to online gaming it is amazing to be playing a game in its developing stages. This game is neat and the people are polite. I have tried a couple of other online games and the people were as mean as I have heard from the examples other people have given. I just want to explore and have fun.

The thing is, this is a roleplaying game. Roleplay is the centerpoint. I understand that PlaneShift may attract people because of its pretty cool community and lovely graphics and expanding world, but if you are not planning on making a true character for yourself, with a distinct personality, and acting as that character at least every once in a while, you are not the target audience, and you will have a very hard time interacting with many others. There are quite a few other free games that will cater more to your needs. But PlaneShift is for roleplayers, and roleplayers primarily.

It\'s not that hard and not boring at all to act In-Character. Maybe you can try it? There is a RolePlaying Guide stickied in these forums somewhere, with a pretty good explanation for beginners. If you simply do not like to roleplay, however, I\'m afraid this is not the best game for you, and talking to others within Yliakum will be a difficulty.

At least, certainly try to use parentheses or brackets for OOC (Out Of Character) conversations.

I hate to say that there is more audiences who like this game than Roleplyaers. To talk with an accent ina game. Some of us are too old for that. I love RPGs but I never get that serious about them. When I am in there to play I am there to have fun, help others, and explore. Do not run everyone off just because they do not play a game like you.
I like what I have seen of Planeshift. Give me a chance to see if the game is like what I want or not. So far I have had no trouble interacting with characters in the game. I do create characters in depth. that is what you do in an RPG. I like the idea of leveling, smithing, mining, and smithing.
I like the idea of creating a character who can travel far and see new places. That is what I look for in a game and so far this has been the only one that promises that. I also like the people in the game, and learning how to play.
The people have been nicer than in other games I tried. I played Anarchy online for a few days and quit. I like to bash things but hated how driven it was and how mean the people were. I also tried another and it was worse. So please at least try to accept that some of us will play along a little but give us room to be ourselves in the game. I did not mean for this to sound rude, but I just want to be given a chance before being kicked out of the game. I might do better than you think.

I think all they mean is that this Planeshift is supposed to be an immersive RPG, and if some players don\'t roleplay properly, it spoils the illusion.  Talking with an accent in-game adds to the depth of a character.  In a real role playing game, your words and actions are supposed to be those of your character, not you, yourself.  And I am sorry, but do you know what I think of saying you are too old to act a certain way?  Excrement.  You shouldn\'t let other people tell you how to be, or what is or isn\'t an appropriate personality trait, interest, or habit.  You should be who you are, and do what you like, as long as you don\'t let it take over your life and prevent you from interacting with other people well, or ruin something important.  In-depth roleplaying happens to be an enriching and enjoyable experience, and you can always return to being who you really are when you\'re finished.

i agree.. you would be surprised at most of the ages of the people here.. i don\'t think roleplaying is for any given age.. we all vary in age and personality as people, and it is the same way but for our characters.. you do not have to be good at roleplaying when you start, but you must be willing to give it a chance and not throw it out the window by saying \"im too old for that..\". if you have anything near an open mind, you will see that roleplaying isn\'t all that bad, and there are many levels of roleplaying. some are more into it than others. there are simply a few basic guidelines you should learn, and then you should get to work on forming a story on your character.. you will see how different the game is when you add the RP aspect into it. it gives it a depth that no graphics could ever provide.. all i ask is that you go into it with an open mind..

I just felt like they were saying if you do not pretend fully in this game than I do not like you nor do I want you in the game. Like I have said I have played other games before. They were not inviting to noobs. They would take over everything and cuss at you for being in their game and speak that way to others who believed the same. I have never asked too much from an experienced gamer. Most of those people were older players who set up territory. I thought this was the same. Yes, I do feel too old to act out parts, but that is me. I feel stupid acting. I just wanted yall to accept and give room for me instead of trying to kick me out of the game before I start. Thank you all. I hope you will give me time to get used to a new world. I hope to stick around and be of some use to you all. Hopefully I can gain enough in my programming skills to contribute to the development.

Gah...  That\'s not what we were saying at all; or at least, that\'s not what I was saying.  The problem is that if you don\'t pretend fully, and you bring modern mannerisms into a medieval-like setting, then it spoils the illusion for the people who are trying to immerse themselves in the game world (at least for a time, I am in no way advocating that a person waste away playing this or any game).  You end up with a case of \"A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur\'s Court.\"  It becomes a rather glaring inconsistency.  If you don\'t like to act, then look at it this way: your character is not you, but you control what he or she does, and that includes the way that he or she speaks and interacts with other characters.  You are not talking to other players, your character is talking with other characters.

i dont think roleplayin is too difficult
« Reply #39 on: August 03, 2005, 09:54:56 am »
this thread had alot of statements that i considered cop outs, like saying that you wanna roleplay a power  hungry warrior and thats why you power level. we always threw those types of people out of table top games, after we had their character killed off in some enjoyable way. of course you can play a power hungry vain perfectionist in a online rpg, and i dont think that means you have to be a power gamer. i had an all gnome guild in eq that were gnome supremists. none of us ever made it to high lvls because we marched around spouting gnome supremacy doctrine to all those that would hear us. man oh man those were the funnest days i can remember.
roleplaying is part of story telling. if you remember anything remember that. anyone can create a backstory for thier character. it doesnt have to be done as a book. you just think of something you consider clever, then add to it as the situation seems fit. i went back to playing eq after a 4 year break. i powergamed my old characterfrom 51 to 56 in a month on the weekends, then i got burned out by the old lvl gear lvl gear dilemma that made me quit in the first place.
any powergamer that really becomes introspective says the same thing. \"i got max level and then wondered what the race was all about. now i have nothing really new to do\"  the developers of this game have impressed me with the straight talk. to say you dont want power gamers is kinda hardcore since they make up a large base of players. but the limited history of mmorpg\'s has shown they not only suck the game of bandwidth but they travel to the top on the backs of all the gamers that are in it for the fun.
maybe thats a lil melodramatic but still, there are a ton of games nowadays. they are gonna start to cater to individual sects of people and im glad to have found one thats pushin roleplay this strong. and no mmorpg needs all the game code to be aimed at roleplay. We The People should be responsible for most of that burden. do guild events, races, drunken brawls... then move up to elaborate player run quests and schemes to entice the new roleplayers into interacting. and thats the key i think, interact with everyone.

Developers, if you wish to implement roleplaying code here are some simple ideas:
implement things that can flush out character concept....
such as... limping models, lazy eyes, tons of regular clothing, and looping emotes so i can make a character \"twitchy\"

oh and maybe a humpback
Breetai Tull, traveler or many lands...
character of many games...
eq,Ko,Rose,tantra,AQ,PQ,and more ...
never once did i max level

Breetai Tull... Forever Noob

*applauds* Well said! I think it would be interesting to see someone try to contract an assassination for revenge.  \"I was cheated, I was!  I want the dirty taken out, an\' I\'ll pay ye well fer th\' deed!\"  Now that\'s roleplaying.

sounds like fun ideas. Thanks for clarifying. I am not a power leveler. I just level up so I can survive. When i played the Anarchy online, you could not even leave the city area until around 20, and then you were easily killed by everything outside. This meant until level 30 or higer you had to go to the subway station and kill freaks. I love the stories, that is why I always loved RPGs. I am glad you are not trying to kick a lot of people out. I enjoy very few of the games I have seen because of hte power leveling and the territorial kick the newb out of the way. Again I say thank you for your kindness. Of what breetai said in the first place that is what drew my curiosity to the game. I traveled between cities and I was amazed at the beauty of the place. Not being worried I left too early and I would get killed becuse of creatures every mile I traveled would take my character  out and I would have to start over. I know it is pre-alpha, but that stirred my interest in hopes the game might give the explorer/quest lover a little room that was not implemented in the group raids to get deeper underground for everything to kill us off. I was always the last to survive and wait for the next group so the enemies would be thinned so I could make it back to the surface. I  may be a yankee(I mean southerner) in King Authers court for a while. I do keep the conversing to usually in game unless some one asks questions out of the game.

That, my friend, is the point.

In regular RPG\'s there is already a story, a set path, that you guide a pre-made character through.. With MMORPG\'s you create the character,  the story, and the path, and you combine it with other characters and their paths.. That is the beauty of games like these.. i simply ask you to try it out sometime.. you will see how nice it really is.

I didn\'t notice if the  long range weapons were implemented into the game yet. I have always loved having a warrior with good bow skills and sword skills. I also like the idea of being able to hunt. It would be cool to shoot your own food, cook it over a fire and have the food for strengthening when weak. Also how do you think the melee will be implemented into the game.

the whole different lots of classes makes a game real good so i can\'t wait for the new update to come out, if the gets wiped that will be good (say you wanted to be an archer and you put lots of points in combat) and you know your way round but it is also a bad thing, games can be fun as when you start off so when you already know the way round everywhere it can be kinda boring in a way so i hope that the update isn\'t too long
