Possible to run on a G3?
« on: July 14, 2005, 08:08:54 am »
I just started playing the game on my mac G3 and it seems to run fairly well. But still it is moving incredibly slow and I am not sure if this because I need a faster computer or this is just a bug in the mac version. If I do need a faster computer, does anyone have any ideas short of spending lots of coin on a new machine or graphics card?
(PS: The text seems to be far too blurry to read! This has probably already been covered but I thought I should put it out there.)

First, could a mod move this to the Mac Thread? Cheers.

Right, yeah as Leeloo said we need to know your exact computer stats. I assume you have OSX, if you don\'t know how to find out your stats, go up the Apple icon in the top left corner and go to About this Mac... then Apple System Profiler (More Info) It\'ll tell you the stats.

Mine for example is a...
667 Titanium Powerbook
512 mb RAM
32 mb graphics card (ATI Rage)
OSX 10.2.8

Ok, so, tell us your stats. The biggest factor in the mac client is the amount of ram you have followed by the graphics card. A 500 mhz with a gig of ram will probably work as well as a 1.6 ghz with 256 ram.

Right, here are a few things you can do to make it run faster aside from buying more ram, a new graphics card or a new computer.

1.) Turn off all sound (Music is bugged on the Mac client anyways)
2.) Inside the Planeshift folder, open planeshift.cfg in Textedit. Change

; Width/height of CrystalSpace visual
Video.ScreenWidth = 1024
Video.ScreenHeight = 768

to something smaller like 800 by 600 or 640 by 480.
3.) Again inside planeshift.cfg, change the screendepth from 32 to 16. It should look like this

; Screen depth (currently supports 8, 15, 16, and 32 bits, NO 24 bits!)
Video.ScreenDepth = 16

4.) Inside the game, right click on one of the windows and turn off all fading.
5.) Also inside of planeshift go to settings, graphics and change to adaptive distance, going even as low as 30.
6.) Finally, run in first person camera, this way the computer will not have to process your character too.

Yeah, all these things will help, hope you get it working, welcome to Yliakum,

It\'ll run pretty slowly, but try the things I suggested, I think it should still play. Also, consider getting more ram for your computer, overall, that will speed it up a lot, not just in planeshift.

Rage 128, that\'s old. Does that card even have 3D accelleration? 16 MB Video RAM is not much either (although twice as much as my old computer had, but I never tried Planeshift on it).
