Q: How many Planeshifters does it take to expalin a simple concept to a newb?
A: Six. Five to argue on who\'s explanation is right, and Moogie to lock the thread.

Actually, I\'m a little skeptical as to it\'s ability to take the abuse dished out by gamers, etc. etc., but still...  8o

The site states that

Optimus keyboard concept completed

Therefore, this is a prototype. Mass production has not set in, if it ever will, so it\'ll not be up for grabs for at least some months AFAICS. Also, knowing that these little displays cost a lot, it\'ll be very pricey.
Add to that that it will require special drivers and support by the applications and it\'ll become a lot less attractive. Still, this is quite neat, especially since I\'m pretty sure that you can, with the right coding, make an amazing lightshow from it. :)

I don\'t like the idea of using this for games, but if you are an artist using photoshop or 3dsmax, this could realy come in handy.

It\'ll not be very useful for gaming, because when gaming you usually don\'t even look at the keyboard, thus all the neatness would be wasted. However, it would still make a great modding addition, considering that when gaming, you also don\'t look at / inside your case. :)

It will have a utility function in nonstandard applications, but I would certainly use it for games, too, if I had one. As for the abuse... it\'ll probably be a little more susceptible, and most ceretainly it\'ll not react well to being immersed in lemonade. Still, I think that it can be made to live through the beatings a keyboard gets when gaming, or when running Windows 9X/ME (repeated BSOD\'s).

Edit: Oh, and let\'s not forget that with that thing we can finally replace the stupid Windoze keys by something worth having a dedicated key, like penguins and little devils. :D

Two words. How much. :D

That\'s sooo cool!!! You could customize the keyboad so the middle row is like abcdefghi. :P
Plus it looks sweet.

The buttons are all Mac thingy related. I hope it\'s pc compatable....not that I\'ll be able to get one any time soon.

Edit: removed some smilys. I had one at the end of each row which was a rule under that cabal list sep had a long time ago. @_@

It\'ll most likely be an USB keyboard, and as such it\'ll be possible to make it work anywhere.

As for customising the keys: you\'d have to customise the keyboard driver for that, unless the keyboard itself supports internal remapping.

I doubt it would survive long under your swift fingers Drey, you\'d better give it to me :P
The keys must be a hell to press with all the wires needed to display stuff on them :/
there\'s no place like 203.81.47.91

The keys won\'t need a lot of wires if they utilise the I2C bus or a similar system, so it\'d be 6 wires at most per key. Considering that only two of them would need to supply some power, the entire wiring can be tiny, not hard to press.

i saw this on slashdot. and i though i want one. this is so cool.

but thinking about it. if it does go usb, i hope they have a default setting for installation of \"insert os here\".

that keyboard probably has a similar amount of processing power and memory to some older computers. i wonder about hacking it to tap some of that extra computer power.
may laanx frighten the shadow from my path.
hardly because the shadow built the lexx.
the shadow will frighten laanx from my path.

one of those better be Linux

Also it would have to be USB I\'d think - I doubt you\'d get enough power from a PS2 Port.

What if you spill like coke on it? My sister spilled coke on my old keyboard...
And what if you want to clean it?

Doesn\'t seem very family friendly, or me friendly. :P
