Better area loading/discarding
« on: July 17, 2005, 01:57:34 am »
For one, it is very annoying if you go from one area to another and then if you step back you have to wait for the old area to load again.

It should be possible for the game to remember the last visited area at least.

Also nearby areas could by loaded automatically as you aproch them. It could be possibly done by loading all areas surrounding the current one. And again, not discarding the areas surrounding the previous area immediately could be good.

I could turn on the load everyhing option if I knew what to put in which config file. And if it takes about 1.5G RAM it is fine, parts will get swapped out. Swapping in is much faster than the loading.

But this would get out of hand as the world grows. Some real solution is needed.

Personally, I\'d say increasing the distance between each loading segment would be fine.
Yes, I realise that makes absolutely no sense.
What I mean is: Right now, taking a step back causes you to re-enter the old area, so some leg-room would be nice.

Both having a small overlap and keeping only the maps you need have been suggested on the bugtracker, so the devs will work on them when they have time.
The probelm in general with loading maps is that each map has it\'s own set of textures anbd objects that it uses, so when you go between say the plaza and the jayose zone, even thoe there are many of the same buildings, they are removed from memory and then put back. That will have to be  refined, as well as a way to load one sector at a time, in later upgrades.

I cannot find it in the bugtracker and it requires yet another registration.

I give up.

Oh, sorry, I whould have been more clear :) You don\'t need to login to search the bugtracker- and I must admit that it can be tricky to find just what you want. But the bugs I speak of are here and here.
I guess what I would suggest, is make a list of all the bugs you see, then use the variuos searching tools to see which of them seem to be reported. if there are more then one, you might want to to register so you can help us find bugs we did not think to look for ;)
Alternately, one can just report bugs to GMs ingame, they know the bugs fairly well.
