Dash & Bash
« on: July 30, 2005, 01:38:31 am »
[Edit: Updated rules and dates]
The Dash & Bash before the crash, come one come all, and you\'ll have a ball.

Dash & Bash Tournament

What?  Single combat tournament with a twist.
Where?  Empty room in the arena next to the easy Tefs.
When?  Monday Nov. 28  2PM EST ( 1900 GMT )
Who?  Anyone who wants to have fun can join as long as you are registered before the tournament begins.  Registration will begin at 1:30PM EST and close 10 minutes prior to event start.

The Prizes:
1st:  100,000 trias plus the choice of any 2 weapons from the Hydlaa Outfitters inventory
2nd:   50,000 trias plus the choice of any one weapon from the Hydlaa Outfitters inventory
3rd:    10,000 trias.

The Rules:
Some of you may recognize this as being similar to something called jousting...

Only normal weapons will be used, and will be supplied. Anyone caught using anything other than the supplied weapon will be disqualified.  All types of weapons are allowed as long as the two competitors agree on the choice. ( melee, swords, axes, daggers ).  Each combatant may use two similar weapons, two different ones, whatever they choose and each pair may use different weapons, as long as the pair agrees to the them.
Each pair of combatants takes the field and chooses their weapon and a starting wall.
When they have signalled their readiness, the referee starts the match and they run at each other (the Dash ) and attack ( the Bash ).
They continue running through each other, all the way to the opposite wall.
They then turn and when the referee signals, they do it all over again.
This continues until one has fallen, or one or both are too tired to continue.
The winner moves on to the next round, while the fallen is welcome to return and watch.
No stopping and no running backwards.
No strafing or turning aside.
Magic is not permitted.
Food of any kind or potions are not to be used during a fight.  (We are watching you:) )They are permissable for healing between rounds however.
Referee\'s decision is final!

Spectators are welcome to attend and cheering and betting on their favourite competitors is encouraged.

We have already held 2 successful tournaments and hope for many more.  All the competitors seemed to have a good time.  I am hoping that some screenshots of the events will be posted here shortly.

With the looming wipe hanging over our heads, most players see the futility of hunting the past couple of days.  To keep them busy and to try and keep the fighting out of the plaza ( also futile perhaps ) Ganinos and I have come up with this tournament we call Dash and Bash.   There are prizes available though we realize that they don\'t mean much right now.  We\'re hoping that with a good response from the community we will hold monthly tournaments and have the winners of those come back and crown a champion for the year.  Donations for the prizes would be welcome.  Hopefully we will also have merchants and concessions available to the spectators as well!  Healers would also be a great addition as I\'m sure your services will be needed to patch up the competitors between rounds.

We welcome any comments or suggestions you might have.

For more info please see either Bodacher or Ganinos.

I think you need to try out the whole dash and bash style of fighting before you hold the tounament I don\'t think that\'ll work very well.

So, I take it this isn\'t anything to do with RP? (Not that I\'m whining, just a question)

Also, the time seems to have chosen nicely to exclude European players. :P The very fact that you post in EST and not GMT means that either you didn\'t really think about that part, or you just don\'t care... :P Again, I\'m just pointing out, not blaming as I\'m aware that it\'s not possible to choose a time that is suitable to the whole world...

Other than that... you should talk to Zan about having this in the next Festival. It looks boring to me, since there\'s no magic involved, but it looks like people were enjoying themselves, more power to \'em.

Congratulations Ganinos and Bodacher for organising it!
Personaly i think that these events are the thing that improves the comunity and there should be more ideeas like this.
Who said RP is missing maby looked in the wrong place :) .
I wish you both luck (not that it is needed ;) ) to make this a monthly event :)

Dash & Bash Technique
« Reply #8 on: July 30, 2005, 02:15:19 pm »
I would like to offer a few notes concerning the techniques of the Dash and Bash.

Those of you taking part in the first competitions will have noted some initial difficulties for the contestants to actually hit one another.

There is an explaination for this.  In one word: TIMING

Every time one starts an attack in PlaneShift, there is always a built-in delay between the time of issuing the command and the time that one\'s character actually strikes the first blow.  This time delay is a bit annoying even when facing an enemy who remains close-in and does not move.   When facing a running enemy, while you are running at the same time, introduces an element of time targeting in that your enemy will have moved out of range before your weapon is effectively brought into play.

Generally speaking, the larger the weapon, the longer the time delay that you will experience.  Bare fists are the absolute fastest to bring to bear.  A large two-handed sword is probably the slowest.  This does not mean that one cannot USE a larger weapon, but rather that one has to allow for this in one\'s calculation of exactly when during the DASH one should initiate the ATTACK command.  You will always have to initiate your attack before you actually get to the spot where your target will be.  You will each have to judge this by eye and make a best guess of the right time, allowing for speed and type of weapon.

Of course, the smaller weapons will be swifter and surer, but the larger ones will deliver more damage per stroke.  Since there is really only time for one set of blows per DASH, the larger weapon might be the better choice, but only if you can figure out the right timing.  Otherwise, it will be quite the liability.  Using two dissimilar weapons at the same time might be the most confusing combination with regard to timing, but I am only speculating on this aspect.

Set your character to \"run by default\" (the equal sign key toggles between walking or running).

It will also help you immensely if you program one of the keys on the keyboard as a shortcut for the \"/attack\" command.  Leaving the other hand free to \"steer\" your player... without having to reach for the mouse.

I hope these notes are of some use to you.  Good luck in your Dashing and Bashing.  Don\'t forget your aspirins and bandages.   ;-)

Not sure that 4pm EDT which equals 9pm GMT will exclude europeans as I\'m English and had a real laugh getting mashed by Tisouril :))

Ok fine. I meant Eastern Europeans. So sue me. Around here that makes it 11 o\'clock. While that\'s not all that late theoretically, it\'s still none too early, either. Anyways, like I said, I\'m not really complaining since you can\'t get the whole world to all fit at one time...
