I whole heartedly agree with Princess Aelya Buying a CD should be enough, but then they make you pay to play the damn game you already paid for....phhhh... screw that, p2p sucks, and usually when games that were free go p2p end up dying, because people dont want to pay for a game, especially ones like the \"R\" word, what a peice, maybe, and i mean MAYBE if it was alot better, ALOT!, i might, just might pay for it, but one game i will pay for is that new star wars galaxies game, that looks great..

Ok, so you think buying the CD should be enough, who pays the bandwidth costs for the servers?

And trust me, the bandwidth costs are significantly higher than the manufacturing costs (hmmm, stamped CDs costing a few cents each, a dollar per printed manual, etc).

The makers of the game have to make up for that extra cost.

Dude, they charge like 50 dollars for the damn cd, so many people buy it, it should be enough, otherwise they should just make the game downloadable, then just pay the monthly/yearly fee...

Also, what about thouse blizzard games? you pay for the disk, and play for FREE! no subscription....

i dont mind the paying monthly fees at all, in fact i used to be playing 3 of those tpyes of games at the same time

but what i do NOT like is paying $50 for a cd THEN paying monthly fees, i play the ones you download for free, not stuff like EQ

What the hell are you talking about, is that why like 95% of alive mmorpgs are p2p? the ones that are free are pre-beta and suck. And from what I can see Runescape is doing well, not the greatest game in the world but people play it.

I bet you guys know about Ultima Online. And Ultima Online does as many other companies have chosen to do. They charge a monthly fee, and do you know why? Let\'s take the Europe server. They pay a monthly fee of about US $1000, just for the connection. This already makes me wonder how they would still be hosting the game if it wasn\'t for the 100.000\'s of players who pay those US $10 per month. Then think about that they\'re hosting like 8+ servers. Then they have to pay for the people that keep the servers from going kamikaze. That easily comes to alot of money each month. Do you now know why people charge money for a game? ;)

And if you still don\'t understand, I suggest you go to the doctor and get your brain checked, \'cause I think there\'d be something wrong with it then. :D

Prices for the Servers can easily get up past the thousands, many people dont understand that and think all they have to pay for is a physical server and a cable connection, well sure a cable connection is fine to host a Quake 3 game but not a Game World with thousands of people.

I know they cost, but a monthly fee sint the answer. Ide be fine buying a game for 60-70 bucks, and playing for free. Advertising, is another way to make money. Put some ads on the login screen or something. There has to be an alternative to p2p.

Well then you shouldnt have to pay for a frickin disk, and then pay to play the game you just bought. I said its better if they just have a p2p, and dont buy the disk, just download and pay.......but still, p2p sucks.

Back to Runescape, They had ads on their game when it was free, i dont know about now, but there were ads.....They got greedy and wanted more money. because there is still the free servers and the pay ones, the free servers still have the ads on them.

Also, paying 10 dollars is fine, I wouldnt normaly pay for them unless the game was really great, and you get a chance to play it for a while, and see if you like it, not one of thouse, give us your credit card number and you can play free for three days.....three days isnt enough to do anything......it should be like 2 weeks, and with out having to give them your credit card number....then when you get hooked, charge money.

Ads dont generate anything, like half a cent a view or someting depending on if its a view one or one you click on.

About ads,
1) they are annoying as hell
2) you could make more money by asking a lamp for money

and just paying for a game straightforward won\'t pay for costs at all. say 100,000 people buy a game at $60, thats 6,000,000 dollars, not bad, but that will be eaten through within months, how would you expect someone to run a game for 3 years on money they would have to spend in months. That monthly fee pays the entire company\'s salary, pays for servers and game maintainence, pays for internet/telephone/etc., pays for tech support, pays for future development of games/expansions, and also pays off any loans or investments made in the game before it was sucessful. There is really not another option other than monthly fee.

And i said that was fine, if you dont have to buy the pay anymore to get the game, and not even be able to play it with out paying money, to play a game you already own.

And the majority of games want about 20 + dollars per month, If the fee was around 10 or so, I think more people would be more inclined to pay that, but still, if they were to charge money, you should be able to play for a couple weeks to see if you like the game or not...
