Regarding servers and the ps future and so on...
« on: September 23, 2002, 10:44:12 am »
I got an id? how ps can stay free even if more servers are needed. Donators is not going to be a problem for 1 -2 servers. Maybe for many serevrs and bandwith like 100+ servers its going to be hard. So what to to. U make so everyone can dl the server application or an version of it anyway. The u have a master server how takes the client at first. This server only have a couple of functions. 1. Have a list of all availble servers that has beeen up for more than 3 hours or something. 2. Take the first connection from all the clients and then spread them to the other servers. 3. yadayadayada
There is more it has to do to keep it a persitent world but to spread the connections to local servers u get alot of benefits. This will need alot of planning in the code but can be done. This is the way u can keep servers running , and also get the clients to go to the nearest server. By making the criterias for login serevr be uptime and speed u can make som sort of promise the login servers will be up, bud they need to sync with each other all the time and maybe this will not work, I dont know....

sounds like a good idea, but i dunno for how far the dev team can work it out. Sounds pretty difficult to me to realize it.

The whole aspect of keeping planeshift free is already more or less figured out, we don\'t need to display ads, planeshift can acctually pay for itself, but I\'m not going to go into details. Planeshift is and always will be free, it is not a huge concern. I does not require attention from the players either.

This idea has been mentioned 1000 times Vildaar is right there is no need to discuss it, we all know its going to end up p2p in the end or it will fail, so drop it.

A few points....

I don\'t think that this is a practical idea for two reasons.  First, it is not a good idea to give any server data out to \"untrusted\' servers.  This means that people could hack up their portion of the server and allow cheats.  Second, it would be very hard to balance the loads based on machines that are not on 24/7.

As for progress, we are making great progress. Just because we don\'t mention it doesn\'t mean we are not doing anything :).

Yes, we are infact making much progress, but the person in charge of updating (Talad) is about the busiest person i have ever met. And to take on a second person just to update the site is unecessary  :D

also, Planeshift will not become Pay to Play, its main gimmick is that it is free

Shut up whoever asked about the team slacking.
The planeshift team does not slack.
The planeshift team is a group of elites.
Elites in graphics.
Elites in programming.
Elites in the crystal space engine.

MAIN POINT:
Lay off.

last thing bout p2p:

i know it will stay free and i wont doubt that, i stand behind that idea.

But this topic was started about another item wich u hear often in mmorpg\'s ....lag. I hope you guys (the dev team) now how to keep this to the minimum. When beta comes out i believe there will be a lot of players going online to test it :)

Dude i said in my personal preference. And PS is not a team of \"Elites\". I have talked to them my self and they say the sit inside coding or drawing for fun. its not a real \"job\" though the do have extreme talent :O

Just because someone does something for fun doesn\'t mean they aren\'t elite. Albiet, not all of us fall into what i would consider the \"elite\' category, but many do. Talad is an elite leader, Paxx is elite in rules, the entire coding team is pretty damned elite, and so is Boonet. The rest of us just don\'t have the experience they do, but i feel we are all pretty good at what we do, or in the case of some the 3+ departments they work in. And i think under the given circumstances the team could be considered elite as a whole. Something like 15 people spread across the world all working very long for free and acctually producing something of quality is not an easy task. In short, individually not all of us are elite, but as a team (which is far more important than individuality) we are.
