ETA Timer on Update Tool and more
« on: August 03, 2005, 12:08:07 am »
\"Humm that was odd.... made me login even though i was already loged in and browsing to Post here, anyway.\"

ETA Timer on Update Tool

Why??

Mmmmm..... it\'s 33% done and still going strong, would be nice to know an estament on how long its going to take. Most other game\'s i\'v played that have an update tool have an eta timer that shows up after a few sec.

Matter of Fact most of them Intigrate the Update tool into the game run command so that it updates then starts the game with in x number of Sec after its done or not (Checkable mark start game when done updateing \"Checked or unchecked\")

As far as why for the intigrated update, well you need everyone runing the same version right so why not Intigrate them and have 1 icon that sead Planeshift and launches a \"Launch Pad\" where the game updates and then starts and maybe even has a Butten you can click to go to setings and so on.

Hope you find my idea helpfull

P.s. Add a Icon to the PlaneShift Updater or game windows this will give it more of a... Quality look and less of a...... Beta. Anyway Cheers! :)

I dunno what ETA means in english but in France and Spain ETA is a terrorist organization so... ETA timer... it\'s like a bad joke in my mind...

ETA = Estimated Time of Arrival
In other words, an estimate of how much time is left to download.

Yeah, I think this might be worth putting in.

Since the updater does several different things (downloading, replacing archives, merging archives), and some of them are affected by network speed while others are affected by hardware performance (and lack of optimization in the installer), it is likely to be a MS-style ETA timer that jumps up and down erratically.
Observer .. or watcher?

About the ETA timer, it\'s exactly like hramrach stated, it would be VERY unexact.

About why it\'s not in the game, maybe we do that in the future, but if we do the client will get another depencency, libcurl.
We are looking in implementing bittorrent technology into the updater, and if we do and make the library ourselves, it wouldn\'t be any more dependency, also speeds would be higher and so on.

If you suffer from slow speeds while merging files, try to enable whole zips (kinda takes away a big point of the updater, but sometimes it\'s smaller) in updaterconfig.xml

nice idea the torrent updater it would be a great job!

I remember someone (but who ? that\'s the question!) official told me... something like... CB has been done at 98% during august 2004...

So Im not sure ETA would be a great idea...
