More Servers!
« on: August 03, 2005, 02:26:42 am »
It would be great if there would be like 2-3 servers so if 1 crashes theres still 2 more left or if you wan\'t to test new updates you still have 2 running!

Ohh yeeeh.. why don\'t you add a donate account?

There sure some people out here in this world who wanna thank you guys with donating!

They dont take donations it\'s on the main site..and in this case if we had 300 servers they\'d all be done. DB wipe, thats the concept. If you talk about other crashes, it\'s been discussed. Search button. Top of every screen, there to be used.

Screw peace...

Before you complain about something, read the thread(s) on the subject...  If you\'d have just looked in the general discussion area or either of the support areas, you\'d have seen quite a few wipe threads, and would have known it was not a crash.  Besides, the server is surprisingly stable.  (recent crashes were due to a dead case fan...)

It shouldn\'t be too hard to copy a server, just like a backup server, then while one is in maintenence, the other one will be available to play, then when that other one is done updating, then the other one closes down for updates, its a good idea :P

DON\'T FORGET, THE MORE BORED I AM, THE MORE DEAD POSTS I REVIVE! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

What for? Cloning the server\'s database would be required each time the primary goes down. However, when it is down due to technical problems the database cloning won\'t work too well. And if it\'s maintenance, why waste the devs time on that cloning instead of letting them do the maintenance?
Furthermore, wasting a server as backup isn\'t a good idea. Servers are donated, and donations are not to be wasted for close-to-useless things. Uptime is not important in a pre-alpha tech demo. Maybe if the server for some reason won\'t be able to be brought back up within two weeks, a temporary server would be something to consider. I, too, would like to be able to play PS any time, but I prefer unhindered improvement over unhindered playing.

The hint in \"are you a dev\" was basically \"whens the server back up\" And yes, you may flame him if you wish :)

Y0da, sweetheart, ignore these rude boys.

I am sure if they weren\'t so busy competing with each other, and actually thought about it, they would love to have a hardware setup that would keep downtime for playing to under an hour, no matter what.

You are absolutely right, that with very little cost or time investment, the current wipe could have been done separately from the old server, and play could have continued until a cut-over to the new and thoroughly tested server build was ready.

For the players, this could easily have meant that there would only be an hour of downtime, or less, from start to finish.

I too am curious, why this very basic thing has not been done.

And I have not yet found any explanation that makes sense.

Yes, things could have been done to eliminate the bulk of the downtime, theoretically.  Most likely however, they hit an unforeseen snag, and simply didn\'t have enough time to deal with it in the time they had originally alloted.  It\'s really not that big of a deal, though.  It\'ll be up eventually.
