Style
« on: August 09, 2005, 06:12:40 pm »
Maybe this is an unrealistic wish at this point, but I\'ll go ahead and say it anyway.

I think the game needs to take it\'s style in a different direction.  The game looks to similar to many other games I\'ve played.  I would have liked to see the characters match some of the great artwork I\'ve seen in the Races section of the web site.  The current models seem like they just used the concepts from this artwork and didn\'t try to match the style and feel of it all.  They feel generic.

This may not be a shared opinion, but I thought I\'d toss it out here anyway.

Basically, you\'re saying:

- Get the rest of the models up and running for the Nolthir, Leumr, etc

- Allow characters to be customized (age, hair colour, beard style, clothes, colour, armour which shows up on the character, more diversity in weapons even if some weapons become redundant to one another)

Is that what you\'re suggesting, right?

That\'s part of it.  I\'m also saying that the style of the models doesn\'t seem unique enough for a game so dedicated to a new and unique look.

Dude, this game isint a game yet.. Its still in Alpha stage of its testing.. meaning everything is being implemented still and fixed. Not like Beta when most of everything thats gonna be in the game is already in and just testing everything out.

The models.. the rest of them will come out in time..

As for diversity, im sure that when everythings out and running, it will be pretty diverse hehe.

As for anything else, well im not sure :)

I just don\'t want the game to slowly become a clone of everything else.

i think the character customisation can be realized in abour half a year. if you look at all the artwork and skins done in the fan art section and put the nicest one in game, then you already have some sort of customisation...
only different colours of skins would be nice, and i don\'t think changing skins would make such a hard coding.

i also think that the rule of stuff shown in the fan art section (like skins) can\'t be implemented is rubbish...
only for map kind of things, but not for smaller objects that you see everywere.

if you have really cool photoshop tutorials don\'t be afraid to pm me!

Full skin variations will be implemented as soon as we figure out how to do it. There are already skins waiting to be used, courtesy of myself and others.

If you don\'t like that any content posted in the FanArt section can\'t be used, simply put, don\'t post it there. :) Go to http://ps-mc.com instead.

Another aspect of this is - how much of the \'style\' of the game lies purely in the graphics?  It is very difficult to find good animators, and we have managed to pin down a few long enough to get working models and animations, for some of the races.

All artists will have different styles - what I am more concerned about is \'style\' of things like guilds, quests, characters etc.  It is *your* job to prevent stock characters and boring RP!

NEW THOUGHT!
« Reply #10 on: August 11, 2005, 07:35:06 am »
I just had a thought.  I\'ve only seen one other game do this that was an MMORPG.  We need fat people!  Yes, you read that right fat people.  I want the option when creating my character to make him huge.  This will help greatly in making a characters look different.  I\'m kinda sick of seeing these perfectly built characters.  I even played a game with a bust option.  Yes, not all characters that are female need DD\'s.  I know the majority will still shallowly pick the \"perfect\" body, but hey I\'d still enjoy seeing a fat warrior or somthin every now and then.

Should that have been a new wish altogether?

I guess having a \"fat\" character wouldnt be too much to ask for. But think about it this way, if hes fat, would he have skill or stat penalties? Heart problems making him weaker? Would he run slower. You have to rule out all those options as well.
Of course you should fight fire with fire, you should fight everything with fire.   :P  Xantherus Icer  :P

Ultimately, you should be able to arbitrarily assign not just build, but also height and proportions. But that is not really important ATM, so while it could be done within a year, it shouldn\'t just yet, because there are other, far more important, things to get working before that. Heck, we don\'t even have models for all races to customise yet!

As for build and such affecting attributes: Not a good idea. After all, IRL gender is in some respects affecting these (look at sports), yet in PS this has been deliberately left out in order to not force selection by attributes. The same should IMO be applied for the rest. A good RPer will RP this, and a non-RPer won\'t select it anyway.

The style of some models is indeed flat compared to the race section. However, this is certainly also due to the unfinishedness and relative unimportance. Also, all models had to be completely recreated for CB\'s radically different animation system, which obviously required working in a hurry that certainly hurt quality. Once all models are done, one can start thinking about re-doing some of them. However, we can be happy to not look like the CVS model. :P

Just curious, what exactly makes a player \"shallow\", if they pick a \"perfect\" body for their character? ;)
