Special Events - world changing to relativly mundane
« on: August 15, 2005, 04:57:04 pm »
Hey, i wrote a massive post before but my comp gave out before i could confirm it:(. Ill try and wrote what i did before.

What i would like to see, is a system where special events occur, heres an example.

One of group of evil players, a devil worshipping guild, wants to summon (insert vowel filled unpronouncible name), the evil archdevil. Everyone knows because it will be a world changing event, maybe the sky could turn red or something. Some ritual may be required or some other system (perhaps a tribute system? or both) where the summoning players have to aquire certain items, find a forbidden tome or something.

Anyway, lets say our evil players do manage it, then complete the ritual. A Devil is spawned with neigh on apocolypic powers (i.e. it is almost beyong killable), Thus requiring a holy crusade resulting in an epic battle.

Anyway, this is an extreme example, a more mundane thing may be for a player to become a vampire, a mayor of a town etc.

Anyway, the \"Why\" to this wish is quite simple. Every other MMORPG promises many things but is always a let down, for example in UO, the most one can hope to accomplish is a moderate sized house (very moderate, due to a housing bug, when housing became available, everyone had a deed, everyone got a small house). Sure you could go and see a dragon, and get mauled, some people could tame them only to have them disappear, Noone could ever achieve great power.

Also, If you make these extreme quest objects Rare (and by Rare i mean Rare no constantly finding them in one place) and forcing people to have to work together for them (all classes, no extreme nerfing of one class while one class was almighty, like the wizard was uber class in UO where as everything else was pretty much useless).

I realise this may cause unbalance (if someone summoned a devil, everyone who tried to fight may be killed) but this could be rebalanced by giving the retaliating players some help, for example if the devil team were winning for an extended period of time, give the good team (note team, i dont think free agents should get any help, although this may conflict with players who wish to play the part of assasins).

Random events are obviously planned, of some kind.  We\'d like the main quests to work first, though...

Yup, sounds like a good idea in the future when the devs have more time. In the meantime, I guess we could have the GMs toss a few hundrer ulbernauts inside the city gates every now and then :P

Sounds pretty cool. Having a nice day just chatting with friends, RPing a bit.. maybe slashing a bit of rats/mining/training on rogues, whatever and then suddenly bam.. the sky turns the a blood red color and a hellish beast is spawned only to kill anything and everything in its path. sounds nice but it would have to be rare.. hard to find. Maybe GM planned events? or just things to collect to make it happen?
Of course you should fight fire with fire, you should fight everything with fire.   :P  Xantherus Icer  :P

Great idea. It would be cool if the ground started shaking and cracking and lava started to explode from underground and the sewers flooded with lava and...
I\'ll just stop right there.

hehehehe.

Yeah, i must admit, the game is great as it stands. I think the devs have done a great job. They truly have made a world where maybe one day, the limits will be removed and a true fantasy world can exist.

By true fantasy i mean you can destroy the world, if you are fortunate or driven enough too, as opposed to UO.

Where fortune and Drive get you ....a house, and a staff, that only differs from other staffs because its blue and makes a funny noise, but costs about a month of solid no fun, no RPing, just collecting money.

I think some of these should be GM Planned, even perhaps GM acted (i.e. if a Devil came into the world from another dimension of its own accord) and some should be player enacted (i.e. collecting the items required and enacting the ritual to summon a devil or god or something, or carrying out a ritual to become a powerful being).

And bear in mind, not everything changes everyones world, maybe a player character could do something that only effects their world, such as becoming a werewolf or something, or Running for mayor, it wouldnt be as dramatic as a devil slaughtering everyone, but it would be interesting and player-empowering.

Anyway i think you all get the point that, by making a player able to change the world in a visible manner, it expands the amount of roleplaying that can be done, thus taking planeshift where it belongs, over and above all the commercial RPG\'s where you think you have something...but your actually still tied down by rules that stop you actually becoming anything.
