i dunno what was wrong with blender but everytime i moved an object together and then went to rearange it, it stuck together and moving it simply moved the whole lot and mutated whatever was there...
i found that very annoying.

never encountered that...
but if you duplicate objects in alt +d than you edit them at the same time. it\'s very useful when editing symetrical things, wich you can join later.
if you want a seperate duplication use shift+d
